| Background of the Crew |
| Just in case you are reading
this, but are not a friend of Ted and Nancy, here is a little background: |
TED
NOBBS:
Ted Nobbs is an architect by profession, and a keen sailor since
childhood. After sailing dinghies with his brother John as a
child and teenager, he graduated to bigger boats and in the
early days was mostly a foredeck hand. He then became a navigator
and helmsman, and participated in many offshore races, both
in Australia and in England, where he worked as an architect
for a couple of years. During many years of racing, he participated
in the Admiral's Cup and the Fastnet, 10 Hobarts, and the Sydney
to Rio de Janeiro Race in 1982. However, after this, a newer
challenge was learning to fly. He had longed to do this as a
child, so sailing for a while gave way to this new sport. He
became a very keen amateur flyer, finally obtaining a single
engined Beechcraft Bonanza. He flew races around Australia and
New Zealand, then few an Aerostar to London and back, a project
which took two full years of intricate and detailed planning.
Following this adventure, he was one of the founders and organisers
of the London to Sydney Air Race in 2001, using the flight plan
from his previous trip to plan the race. He blames Nancy for
this idea to go long range sailing. |
NANCY
KNUDSEN:
Nancy Knudsen is a Queenslander, a school teacher by profession,
and spent several years in the television industry in both Queensland
and New South Wales. She then moved into the tourism industry,
where she worked for some 25 years. While always keen on all
water sports, it was only after the move to Sydney that Nancy
"discovered" sailing. She participated in many "round
the buoys" races in Sydney Harbour, and some short off-shore
races, finally graduating to ocean races. She participated in
several Lord Howe races, Sydney to Mooloolabah, and other coastal
races. While nowhere as experienced (or talented some would
say, but not Nancy) as Ted, Nancy sailed enough to have the
bug to go ocean cruising. Nancy blames Ted for this idea to
go long range cruising. |

| WHEN TED AND NANCY MET... |
When Ted and Nancy met,
introduced by a mutual sailing friend, they were both "second
time around". Ted has one son - Julian - by a previous marriage,
and Nancy has two children - Kassandra and Simon. All are grown and
living away from home. They met in 1982, and married a couple of years
later.
Having lived together for 20 years, they are now betting that they
can make the trip around the world without killing each other on the
way. - - - But you never know. Both have led pressured working lives,
with small time for any extended holidays. Both have quit work to
spend at least three years on this journey, meaning that they are
very very poor, having spent four times the planned budget on outfitting
the boat. |
