Welcome to the Blackpool wlan web-site.

 

The purpose of this site is to raise awareness of the possibilities of community wireless local area networks, which can benefit many people.

Anyone who has already setup wifi hotspots or access points, or wants to be part of this project please contact me.

Yes.Possibly. Although not just anyone can connect.

Most access points or hotspots( including this one) use encryption to prevent access to anyone who does not have the correct passphrase.
Some also use censorship to prevent access to certain websites.

Some hotspots charge a fee for using the internet connection, again anyone requiring access should contact me.

Due to both technical difficulties and lack of resources the BWLAN hotspot is currently inactive.

There has been alot of debate recently as to making public WIFI hotspots available to all, the tv programme 'The Gadget Show' also ran a campaign to highlight the need for open wifi access in our cities:

Many people I know would be prepared to share their unused bandwidth, the problems arise when someone else uses your IP address to commit fraud or other distasteful acts, as far as I'm aware the home-owner who of that IP address would be liable!

Many ISP's do not allow their connections to be shared and it is often part of their Terms and Conditions.
