My Soul is a Witness : African-American Women's Spirituality By Gloria Wade-Gayles
I have only recently discovered this work. It is a wonderful collection of essays, poetry and a few novel extracts from writers such as Toni Morrison, Toni Cade Bambara and Alice Walker. I highly recommend it. This collection examines Black women's spirituality in the context of the time of enslavement; traditional African spirituality; Christianity; Islam; the family; politics; history. It contains a piece by Luisah Teish and another which makes reference to her work. This anthology is very rich and very nourishing.
So much of this book is about traditional African spirituality. These sistahs are talking within the context of going to church, singing hymns, listening to the sermons, giving the lessons and testifying. Yet, with this are interwoven tales of connecting with the ancestors, visiting the slave quarters, going to Ibo Point, exchanging information on which herbs to use and for which purposes, and always, always sharing the stories that celebrate the memories and contributions of the ancestors.
My one and only (and mild) criticism is that it does not cover Black women's involvement in Buddhism. There is a piece by bell hooks, but she is not exploring Buddhism in this writing.
