Draw Her Beloved Characters!

Author's Comment

This story was written in 2007 for a writing contest. I was aiming for second prize, an Ipod. But I never won anything. xD Nevertheless, I liked writing this. I managed to get one of my OCs / youngest daughter, Christie in the story. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I wrote it. =) Comment if you like! ;p

Oh yes, and proof that I did actually wrote the story for those who have suspicions (which I doubt), you can also view it here on this site where I entered for the contest: http://www.yorkregion.com/Community/PenPixel/article/21749

Weirdo at First Sight

“I love gym!” Well, that was what people were supposed to hear when I was chatting with my friend, Christie. Apparently it seemed that some needed their ears checked, because a phrase can make one go crazy enough that others have to suffer by their ignorance.

Exactly what had happened? Let me introduce myself. My name is Kayla and I’m a sophomore in high school. I don’t mind weird people if they don’t bother me. But what I do mind are obsessive people that hover over you while they crack up the lamest knock-knock jokes, thinking that they are comical. It all started last week when Christie and I were discussing random topics on the school field.

“So, what’s your favorite subject this year?” Christie asked as she crossed her legs on the green grass.

I simply adored running because it made me feel so energized and free. So it was an obvious answer to that common old question. So enthusiastically, I answered that I loved gym. Just then the class weirdo, Jim, had to pass by the school field. He jumped in front of me right after my little comment.

“Why, hello there ladies! Lovely day, is it not?” Jim gave a big goofy grin and glanced back and forth from me to Christie.

“Yea…I guess…” I slowly drew out, hoping he would leave because his presence already annoyed me.

“I hear someone likes someone!” He started to do the winking and nudging motion at me.

“What?” Christie and I exchanged a puzzled look. Only a minute later we both realized what he meant.

“Oh, you idiot! You’ve got it all wrong!” I threw a piece of rock nearby at him. He dodged easily because it was a very sloppy throw. His grin just widened.

“Ha-ha! Right, like I’ll so believe that,” he laughed so hard that he started snorting. It was only seconds later he recovered himself where Christie and I just gave him a double face of disgust. He cleared his throat and went, “You can come to me anytime, sweetheart. I’m always here for you!” He finally went off and left Christie and I at peace.

After that Jim started to follow me everywhere. Like when I was in line for lunch, he already saved me a spot at the front. (He screamed out, “Kayla!! A spot saved just for you, darling!!”). And when I closed my locker, he appeared right beside me. He had a textbook in front of his face and did a surprise “Peek-a-boo!” Couldn’t that dope see that I was not interested?? I mean, I had a couple of crushes in the past but he’ll never be one of them!

A week later came rushing by was the Spring Fling dance. And guess what else came rushing by? Yes, Jim zoomed by like a tornado just to ask me to be his date. But before I could say no, he already assumed I would say yes.

“Great! Meet me at seven tomorrow night!” And he bounced off like a kid that won a jackpot of candies.

“What are you going to do now, Kayla?” Christie whispered to me as we watched Jim, laughing like a maniac in the distance.

“Before he came, we already agreed to our other friends to be there. We have no choice!” I groaned in disbelief and pounded my head against my binders, which nearly gave me a bruise.

The next day, I arrived in a simple cute, pink halter dress with Christie. I scurried into the gym, trying hide from the hawk-like eyes of Jim. I was ducking here and there like I was some cartoon criminal. It wasn’t soon after that I was caught behind the snack bar, stuffing myself with sweets.

“What are you doing down there?” Jim raised his eyebrow at me when he saw me crouched down to the floor with my half-empty plate.

“Oh…uh, I was looking for my…cookie!” I grabbed a dirty cookie of the ground.

Jim just raised his eyebrow even higher like I was the weird one, which I was at that moment. I quickly threw the cookie into a garbage can beside me.

Jim gave a low whistle. “You look great there, Kayla.”

I was quite flattered because I rarely get compliments. I’m the type of girl that doesn’t dress up often, except during special occasions. I gave a once over look at Jim. I’ve got to say, I was quite impressed. Usually he was a slob but today he cleaned himself up quite well. He was very…cute, I had to admit. I guess some slobs have their days.

“You, err…look pretty fine yourself.” I was glad that the gym was dark with lightings, I was blushing like mad. I quietly scolded myself to not fall for this once in a life time charm.

We both stood there for a minute. (I was ditched by my so-called-best-friend, Christie so she could go dance with her boyfriend).
“…You want to dance?” Jim finally asked. It was very awkward because his behaviour was unusual. He wasn’t as loud and bouncy like yesterday; now he was quieter and seemingly nervous. Not wanting to be rude, I nodded my head slowly. I mean, what could happen?

So we reached the dance floor and at that moment it just had to be a slow song! I was hoping for some loud, hip hop song, so I wouldn’t have interacted with Jim. I had no choice; I couldn’t weasel out of this now. I know I could’ve but it’s just a dance anyway, might as well suck it up and live with it. We danced for awhile. When there was an upbeat song, I danced like some very high, drunken kid (Music can easily shift my mood). An hour later, both of us fell into a couple of chairs with exhaustion. It was a long time since I’ve danced this much.

     “Enjoying yourself, Kayla?”

“Oh yeah! But they should get better music,” I answered. “They mostly have rap and I hate rap. There’s no real singing at all!” I couldn’t help it, but kept ranting on and on. And surprisingly, the guy actually listened. I expected him not to, but apparently he did.

His quiet phase was over when he piped up eagerly, “Do you want to go out sometimes?”

Now it was me who went into the quiet phase. I didn’t give him an answer, just sat there and fiddled with my fingers.

     “Well?” He waited impatiently.

“We had a lot fun earlier and it was great. But…I don’t think of you that way…” My hands clenched onto the dress and my head started to swirl. I began to doubt my answer.

I glanced at Jim and felt terrible. His expresion was heart-breaking.

“I’m sorry…” I shut my eyes, hoping this was all just a bad dream.
Jim fidgeted uncomfortably. “It was expected anyway. I did have a crush on you for a long time but I knew there would never be a chance for me, except today.”

I opened my eyes quickly with astonishment. “What did you say?” My voice was silent than ever.

He chuckled. “Yes, you heard me right. I had a crush on you for awhile, since the beginning of last year.” He scratched his head. “You were easy to read, you would never go for someone like me; a weirdo.”

I felt my cheeks burning with shame.

“When you said, ‘I love gym,’ I had to jump in for an opportunity. It took a lot of courage to even ask you out for tonight, though you never gave the response because I was too quick.” He started laughing like an idiot again. When he saw that I didn’t join along, he quickly shut up. Now it was back to the moment of silence, but not really because the DJ was blaring up the speakers with some new hit single.

“You know what?” I finally spoke out.

     Jim perked up.

“I enjoyed tonight and I’ve learned much about you. So I guess I’ll give it a go.”

An adorable smile crossed Jim’s face which also brought one to mine too. Before I could stop him, he leaned over and gave me a peck on the cheek.

I squeaked and this time I didn’t blush with embarrassment.

“This is my revenge for not liking me in the first place,” he smiled devilishly.
