Birman - The Sacred Cat of Burma

Listed as the 7th most popular breed of cats, the Birman might seem to look like any average colored cat. However, these Birmans are not expected to match the appearance of Siamese or Himalayan cats in most cases. Generally medium-sized, Birman cats are taller and longer than these famous Asian breeds. Their size and shape must remain nicely balanced. Their unique fur is often a mid-sized length and silky just like an angora rabbit?s, plus it is not vunerable to matting or tangling. These cats must be given little or no attention at all, potentially a once a week brushing and bathing provided that it is necessary. All Birmans supposed to have a golden cast in their coat and their blue eyes are prominent.

The temperament of Birmans is what makes it a popular breed. They are a wonderful companion cat that seeks your presence even when you're asleep. These cats are also somewhat mischievous, intelligent, affectionate, curious and playful even when they reach their later years. These cats are also sociable, loving and good-natured when you take care of their needs. The Birman cat had been a revered companion to traditional Burmese Kittah priests in Burma.

Taking Care of Your Birmans

When it comes to the care and psychological understanding of our domesticated pet cats, we have recently become more knowledgeable than ever before. In light of modern research techniques and advancements in animal behavior comprehension, we are now better able to help our cats live longer, healthier and happier lives.

Spay and Neuter

Literally millions of healthy cats are euthanized each year, in the United States alone, simply because there are not enough forever homes in which to place them. Eliminating potential suffering is a strong campaign that advocates fixing cats, but there are other benefits as well.

Benefits of Spaying your female cat include:

  • she will no longer experience her heat cycle, the anxiety that comes with it and she'll experience less desire to "roam".
  • spaying your female cat will drastically reduce her chances of contracting mammary gland tumors, and the potential for ovarian or uterine cancer is all but eliminated (if at all possible, kittens should be spayed prior to first heat).
  • spaying improves over all health for the life of your cat.

Benefits of neutering your male cat include:

  • neutering your male cat will eliminate his desire to spray or "mark" his territory.
  • his desire to roam and fight will diminish.
  • risk of testicular cancer and incidents of prostate disease are drastically reduced.
  • neutering eliminates aggressive behaviors.
  • helps male cats to experience less anxiety, and enjoy overall healthier, more comfortable lives.

Spay USA, a program of the North Shore Animal League America, states that their mission is to help eliminate the number of unwanted cats and kittens by offering low cost spay and neuter services for those who otherwise would not be able to afford the surgery. Many cat owners are finding that there are veterinarians, recognizing the importance of the surgery, who are willing to work with cat owners regarding their ability to cover the cost.

Cat Rescue

The single most important step any one individual can take toward the advancement of humane cat treatment is to adopt their next cat from a shelter or rescue facility. Cat Rescue, Inc, of Chesapeake, VA, is just one of the many no-kill shelter facilities that offer cat adoption, as well as a whole host of other cat related services. Along with adoptable cats and kittens, many of these such organizations provide low cost medical care, spay and neuter programs, fostering and volunteer opportunities, cat care education, as well as advice and information for distressed cat owners.

Cat Food - The Importance Behind Your Cat's Dietary Intake

According to "Maintaining the Perfect Cat Diet", by Gina Spadafori and Paul D. Pion, "a lot of different elements (about 60) go into keeping your pet healthy, all working together to keep his body working as it should be." Spadafori and Pion listed the following as an essential dietary plan for keeping your cat happy and healthy:

  • Protein - Cats have exceedingly high protein requirements, especially as kittens. Proteins are delivered from both plant and animal material and vary in digestibility. Cats glean the highest protein benefits from meats, poultry, dairy products and eggs.
  • Carbohydrates - Essentially, sugars and starches. Cats need these for energy and many carbs in cat food also provide fiber, essential for digestion completion.
  • Fats - Cats have a higher metabolic rate than most animals and burn fats as fuel. Fat from animal sources provide cats with necessary fatty acids they can't get elsewhere.
  • Vitamins - Vitamins are divided into two categories; water soluble and fat soluble. Your cats fundamental water soluble vitamins are: B vitamins, niacin, panthothenic acid, folic acid, biotin, choline and vitamin C. His fat soluble vitamins should include; A, D, E, and K.
  • Minerals - These elements make up a small portion of your cats diet but they are vital for optimum health. Minerals important for cats are: calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium chloride and zinc.
  • Water - Cats must have a continuous supply of fresh water available and should be encouraged to drink as often as they are willing.

When it comes to choosing the best cat food, it's a good idea to become a label reader. And remember, while maintaining a healthy diet for your cat, bear in mind that like with most things, more is not better.
