Plant Distribution
Materials:
Paper
Pencil
World Map
Colored Pencils
Procedure:
1. Choose on plant from the list: rice, cotton, corn, sugar cane, tomato, pepper, potato.
2. Using library resources, research the plant.
3. On a sheet of paper, list the plant’s name and the place of origin. Also list the part or parts of the plants that are used , and the original purpose or purposes for which they were used.
4. Describe the plant spread to other parts of the world.
5. List the current uses of the plant and any substitutes that have been developed.
6. Using a colored pencil and a world map, show where the plant originated, and indicate the routes used to distribute the plant to the areas of the world where it is grown.
7. Using another color pencil and the map, identify where in the world products the plants are presently utilized.

Analysis:
1. Where did the plant originate?
2. What were the original use or uses of the plant. Was this the use for which the plant was later exported. Explain.
3. When was this plant first brought to the attention of the rest of the world? To where was it exported?
4. In this plant used in the same way today? If not, explain. Describe any synthetic or natural substitutes you can think of.
