Prologue

Turaga Library

Each of the six Turaga on Mata Nui has a special room in which they keep their most secret writings, legends, and belongings. Each is sealed with an Identity Key, so that only the Turaga may enter.

Identity Key

Images: [Sketch]

Reference entry: [Tools Entry]

A special key with the power to detect who is using it to unlock a door or container. There are only 20 known to exist. Most are owned by the Turaga. Six are used to gain entrance to the Turaga Libraries, and the Great Library in Kini Nui Hall. Turaga Whenua also has one to enter the Vault, in the basement of Kini Nui Hall. Various others are used to enter secret doorways and chests with valuable items throughout the island, while a few are owned by Matoran, like Kewonga the Healer. When placed in a lock, it will glow, as it detects who is using it. If it is the proper person, it will open the lock. Otherwise, it will do nothing.

The Legend of the Paracosmos

For years the Turaga had studied mysteries, and learned amazing things about their world, but now, shortly after the coming of the Toa on Mata Nui, something has been found that shocks even them. Turaga Whenua began that day by heading to his Turaga Library, to study theories and prophecies about the Toa. But he was surprised to find a strange tablet sitting on a shelf. He knew the patterns inscribed on it well, and had received many such tablets over the years from beings the Turaga dared not mention. Reading it, he discovered a Legend perhaps more important than any he'd ever seen. It read as follows:

Before the change, in the world outside of time, there was one universe, one cosmos. The Tapestry of Time branched into many thousands of strings, but these strings were merely shadows. The real Bionicle Cosmos followed one path only. Then there was an Event. This Event was so powerful, the Tapestry split, was duplicated, at the very root. A new, second tapestry was woven. The strings of the first tapestry were copied, and many new strings were added. The tapestry became far more intricate than the first, but always the core pattern converged back to mirror the pattern of the first. This second cosmos was not just a mere shadow of the first; the two ran parallel, equal in reality, but subtly different in design. This was the result of the Event; the change. This was the Bionicle Paracosmos.

Chapter 1

Kopaka, Toa of Ice

Images: [Kopaka]

Reference entry: [Characters Entry]

Kopaka is one of six Toa who have finally arrived on the island of Mata Nui, after a thousand years adrift in the ocean, asleep in metal canisters. Shortly after awakening, Kopaka learned that the island was plagued by the influence of a powerful enemy known as Makuta, and it was the destiny of the six Toa to defeat him. Kopaka is the Toa of Ice, who controls the windstorms and the glaciers. He is a loner by nature, and dislikes the company of others, except sometimes the villagers of Ko-Koro, the Ice Village. He is against the six Toa teaming up, much preferring the silence of solitude. Besides, he is the most powerful Toa, in his eyes, and so he needs nobody else.

Kopaka wears the Great Kanohi Akaku, the mask of Vision, which allows him to see through solid objects, and discover that which is hidden. Like all Toa, he carries a Toa tool, which allows him to focus his elemental power over ice. His tool is a sword, and he also carries a shield.

Great Inakko Mask of Combination

Images: [Sketch] [Combining a Huna and Mua]

This mask enables the user to access more than one Kanohi at a time, essentially "combining" their powers. Two Kanohi can be called on with ease, and up to five Kanohi with a little more concentration. Theoretically, six, seven, or even eight Kanohi could be called on at once with more concentration, but such a task would be incredibly draining mentally, and is generally not worth the energy expended. The second image above shows the effect of an Inakko combining a Huna mask of Concealment and a Mua mask of Silence – the result being a mask that enables the user to move without being seen or heard!

Dahuarogo Ice Lake

Images: [Kopaka approaching the lake]

Like most areas of Ko-Wahi, this lake is usually covered in ice. Below, however, is a congregation of tunnels filled with liquid water - maintained primarily by the heat from Kiraia Ice Fish. Such lakes are common throughout Ko-Wahi, and they are favorite spots for Ko-Koronan ice fishers, such as Nijire. Occasionally, a sunny day will melt the ice on the lake, exposing the liquid water to the surface.

Chapter 2

Nijire

Images: [Sketch]

Reference entry: [Characters Entry]

Nijire is a female Ko-Koronan ice fisher. She uses her fishing rod with a magnetic tip to catch ice fish and other creatures the Ko-Koronans use and export for food. Nijire's mask is a white Matoran Roku Mask of Memory.

Ice Fishing Pole

Images: [Nijire's Fishing Pole]

A fishing pole of Ko-Koronan design. The line is tipped with a magnetic "hook" that grips Ice Fish strongly upon contact. The fisher's end of the line is wrapped around a round holder which is held in one hand, while the pole is held in the other. The line is reeled in by twisting the holder around with the arm rapidly. The best ice fishers, like Nijire, can reel in even an Obaso Giant Ice Fish in mere minutes using this technique.

Great Roku Mask of Memory

Images: [Sketch] [Right side] [Left side]

This mask increases the user's ability to remember the past, sometimes well enough to mimic a photographic memory.

Kiraia Ice Fish

Images: [Old, young, and younger Kiraia]

Reference entry: [Rahi Entry]

A common Ko-Wahi ice fish. They blast a plasma/chemical mix at ice to melt tunnels through the ice of Ko-Wahi. The chemicals keep the tunnels liquid for several months. Most other Ko-Wahi ice fish and similar creatures live in or travel through Kiraia tunnels. They are often caught by Ko-Koronan ice fishers for food.

Obaso Giant Ice Fish

Images: [Sketch]

Reference entry: [Rahi Entry]

A large Ko-Wahi ice fish. Capable of burrowing through ice, or even loose underwater stone, with its blunted chainsaw-like snout. Usually, they stay in Kiraia tunnels, since that means less work on their part. It takes a skilled Ice Fisher to capture an Obaso.

Wkahnau

Images: [Sketch]

Wkahnau are powerful Onu-Wahi Rahi. They are known for, among other things, ability to tunnel through even solid stone faster than a Toa of Earth. Through earth, their speed is even greater. Wkahnau are ferocious fighters, who have no concept of gentleness at all. Their favorite defense strategy is to punch at a foe with their powerful front claws, an attack even Muaka fear. Wkahnau also have a limited anti-gravity ability, which they often use while tunneling so that the direction they are digging in makes no difference; they seem to float amongst the earth, almost swim through it.

Mukana

Images: [Sketch]

Reference entry: [Characters Entry]

Mukana is a Ko-Koronan Guard who, along with Matoro, is one of the best warriors in the Koro. He does not fear even the strongest Rahi, and is a talented tactical thinker. Mukana's mask is a white Matoran Rau Mask of Translation.

Matoro

Matoro is one of the few Ko-Koronans that are able to fluently translate Turaga Nuju's strange language, and as such he frequently travels with Nuju. He is also one of Ko-Koro's best warriors, often going on long treks through Ko-Wahi alone or with Mukana, hunting infected Rahi. He has been working on a translation dictionary of Nuju's language for many years, though it is far from finished. Matoro wears a sand blue Matoran Akaku mask of Vision.

Turaga Nuju

Nuju is the leader of the village of Ice, Ko-Koro. He wears a gray Noble Matatu mask of Telekinesis, and carries a Staff shaped like an ice pick; his badge of office. He is perhaps best known for the strange language of clicks, whistles, and other odd sounds that he almost always speaks in. While Nuju can speak Matoran, and does on rare occasions when it is absolutely neccessary, it is his opinion that if someone cannot, in most circumstances, take the time to figure out what he is saying, that person is not worth his time. Turaga Nuju spends most of his time studying the Wall of Prophecy, attempting to learn of the future.

Raitu

Raitu is a Ko-Koronan Guard known for his inventiveness when it comes to strategy. Raitu wears a gray Pakari mask of Strength.

Protos

Reference entry: [Culture Entry]

For many years, the Matoran relied on a barter system of economics. However, as time went on, they found themselves more often than not trading blocks of high-purity solid protodermis, as more and more was mined in Onu-Wahi. To make things more efficient, the Turaga recently established a system of coins made out of this form of protodermis. The coins are simply called "protos." (See the Reference Entry for much more detailed information, such as the rules of Proto Currency and a more detailed history.)

Chapter 3

Noble Mua Mask of Silence

Images: [Sketch]

This mask enables the user to move without making a single sound.

Kewonga

Images: [Sketch]

Reference entry: [Characters Entry]

Kewonga is a Le-Matoran who lives quite some distance from Le-Koro. He is known as "The Healer" because of his ability to use the Great Halehki Mask of Healing that he wears! But because the Halehki will only heal what the wearer understands, he has also perfected a science of special potions he uses to learn about unusual illnesses. Matoran from all over Mata Nui come to him when they are injured or ill. He has several tamed Rahi that guard his hut, including some rare Fikou spiders, and rides a Gujha Lajhoata Giant Bee to get to any place above ground on the island.

Wkahnau Cave

Images: [Sketch of the Cave] [The "Stalactite Forest"]

This cave in Ko-Wahi is the location of a Kanohi Inakko that Toa Kopaka needed to collect. It was feared by Matoran for many years, due to the powerful Rahi known as a Wkahnau that lived there. It had been so long, in fact, since the last villager set foot in the cave, that all that was remembered about the place was a small riddle inscribed on a tablet reading "Where cliff, plain, darkness, and fire meet, and no Tohunga dares challenge feet, an Inakko is hidden." This meant that the dark cave entrance was at the bottom of a cliff, overlooking the Dahuarogo Ice Lake, and inside was a deep hole that led down a long distance to a lava river. An "island tower" rose up from the middle of the hole, and a single ice-covered "skylight" let a dim bluish light filter in. The rest of the cave was a maze of complex rock formations, which the Wkahnau (with powerful clawed feet for digging or whacking things) was easily able to hide amongst. To the rear of the cavern, several tunnels led off into the other tunnels of Onu-Wahi, beneath Ko-Wahi. And to the left was a wide, low-ceiling area full of stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that grew so thick it was said to resemble a forest.

Years ago, the adventurous Ko-Koronan Kejokta, a friend of Nijire's, wandered into the cave, despite the fact that Turaga Nuju had warned the Matoran never to enter it. He survived, and told Nijire what he saw. Shortly after, however, he disappeared. It was presumed that he must have snuck into the cave again, and wasn't so lucky the second time. Turaga Nuju realizes this is even more likely now that he knows the cave is home to a Wkahnau - even infected Wkahnau rarely spare the lives of their prey. This cave became the site of a battle between infected Rahi and Kopaka, Nuju, and some Ko-Koronans when Kopaka's search for the Kanohi Inakko went horribly wrong.

Btou Staff

Images: [Sketch]

Btou staffs are artifacts of power so secret Matoro once commented that he was surprised the Turaga allowed even him to know about them. Put simply, anyone who is touching a Btou staff can use the powers of Kanohi masks of power - of any level. Even Matoran, who cannot use masks normally, are able to when they hold a Btou staff. Turaga can use them to access Great Kanohi powers. Much about Btou staffs remains mysterious, such as their origin, or whether there are other powers vested in the staffs, as the Turaga have long suspected.

Prior to the coming of the Toa, only seven were known to the Turaga. As the most useful aspect of these staffs is that they enable Matoran to use mask powers, the Turaga have secretly trusted a few to certain Matoran, such as the Healer, Kewonga. Turaga Vakama, Nuju, and Matau also have one, though they rarely use them against Rahi - they do not want Makuta to know they have them.

Great Halehki Mask of Healing

Images: [Sketch] [Side sketch]

This mask allows the user to heal that which he understands!

Giant Lajhoata Bee

Images: [Original concept] [Improved concept Gujha Lajhoata] [Young Lajhoata Bees] [MOC by Gukko of a Erboru Lahjoata] [Erboru MOC stinger] [Erboru MOC with Le-Koronan rider]

Reference entry: [Rahi Entry]

These Giant Bees are solitary, and never actually make nests. They rest in thick foliage at night, always semi-alert to any danger. They can see a wide range of infrared light, so they can usually see living things coming even in pitch black. They almost never fight, preferring to flee from any danger. However, in the rare instances when they have no choice, they can be especially fierce, and their "stinger" carries an electro-shock serum that stuns most creatures instantly. They are smart, and rarely get captured or infected.

There are many different species of this Bee. Some are larger, some smaller. They all behave basically the same, except for a rarer small, red one (Called an Island Red Lajhoata) that lives mainly on the outlying Le-Wahi islands. It will fight in defense more often than it will flee. Also, some species will attack Fikou spiders on a whim, but otherwise act like most species. The smaller one with a Ruru in the image of the MOC above (An Erboru Lajhoata) is slightly more friendly than the other species, and a few have been tamed by Le-Koronans. Unfortunately, a few have also been infected since just before the Toa came.

Kewonga the Healer, an unusual Le-Koronan that can use his Great Halehki Mask of Healing, has tamed a Lajhoata Bee, and rides it to wherever his healing powers are needed on Mata Nui. The bee is a Gujha Lajhoata, one of the three largest species.

Kopeke

An aloof Ko-Koronan, who spends most of his time in a special cave atop a mountain in Ko-Wahi. The cave features a many faceted wall of ice. Each facet of the wall is aimed at a different area of Ko-Wahi. Kopeke can thus see almost all that goes on in the entire Wahi. Like most Ko-Koronans, he is not much of a talker, but his aloofness combined with his love of "spying" as some call it, make him somewhat unpopular among the other Ko-Koronans. He means nothing ill by his behavior, it is just his way. Kopeke's mask is a light blue Matoran Komau mask of Mind Control.

Great Naulako Mask of Stamina

Images: [Sketch] [Side] [Original Concept]

This mask increases the user's stamina, so the user can remain active for far longer than normal without getting tired.

Noble Rakati Mask of Camouflage

Images: [Sketch] [Side]

This mask gives the wearer the ability to create camouflage on the surfaces of objects, that is permanent unless washed off or reversed by another Rakati. The camouflage can have texture, up to several inches thick, with heavy concentration.

Lohraka

Images: [Sketch (with two smaller sea Rahi)]

Reference entry: [Rahi Entry]

A giant starfish-like Sea Rahi, common in the ocean around Mata Nui. They are known for the stun poison in the large spines they're covered in. A diver must always take care never to touch a Lohraka, or he or she could drown while stunned. But the poison does have one good use; it is harvested for use in Stun Spears.

Stun Spear

Images: [Sketch]

Stun Spears contain the poison of Lohraka, which stuns its victims. Stun Spears can be used multiple times against attacking Rahi, stunning them rather than piercing. The length of time stunned depends on how much poison is used. Lohraka rarely stun for longer than a few minutes, but the poison in Stun Spears is refined so the Stun can last as long as half an hour with one hit on a small Rahi. The larger the Rahi the less effective it is, however. Most dangerous Rahi take several hits to be rendered unconscious.

Ktongii

Images: [Spearthrowing]

Reference entry: [Characters Entry]

A Ko-Koronan Guard. Known for the fact that he hasn't spoken a word in over a hundred years, his character can only be described as icy. Ktongii wears a dark teal Rakati mask of Camouflage.

Teuara

Teuara is a female member of the Ko-Koro Guard. She wears a white Naulako mask of Stamina.

Talvi

Talvi is member of the Ko-Koro Guard. His mask is a black Matoran Kakama mask of Speed.

Pakastaa

Images: [Frozen in Ice]

A member of the Ko-Koro Guard. Pakastaa stands watch tirelessly at the gates of Ko-Koro. He is very accustomed to wintry weather; often he will stand like a statue for so long that several inches of snow will accumulate on him! He rarely speaks, but never misses an opportunity to salute anyone who is in authority over him, or that he respects... or that happens to walk by. Pakastaa wears a black Matoran Huna mask of Concealment.

Chapter 4

Chogo

[Destructive Chogo] [original concept] [MOC made by BZP member Gukko] [MOC again] [MOC zooming along]

The following is the bio Gukko posted in this BZP topic: Rahi based on details I gave him. He said it well, so I'll just quote that.

"The Chogo is a common Ko-Wahi Rahi which has ski treads on its stomach, and round saws on its hands. In one mode it walks, and in the other it zooms along ice like a mix between a snowmobile and a penguin. On open icy plains it will ride with its hand saws down in the ice next to it; that's part of how it propels itself, holding up its feet and head. When it wants to go slow, it will walk and cut through any ice in its way. They nest in ice caves that they either carve themselves or find. The infected ones made up the main Ko-Wahi part of Makuta's Rahi forces, alongside Muaka and Kane-Ra."

Muaka

Images: [Charging!]

This large catlike Rahi is known to live all over the island of Mata Nui. A sizable number live in Ko-Wahi. The Muaka's most distinguishing feature is its extendable neck; which can jerk out, teeth bared, for several times the length of the Rahi. These are some of the most feared Rahi in Ko-Wahi.

Nui-Rama

A giant wasplike Rahi, native to Le-Wahi. Some are known to lurk around Ko-Wahi as well.

Chapter 5

Kopaka's Sword merged with the Btou Staff

Images: [Sketch]

While searching for a Kanohi Inakko, Kopaka, Nuju, and some Ko-Koronans found themselves in battle with a powerful Rahi, known as a Wkahnau. It had a strange tool tied to its side; called a Btou Staff. During the battle, the staff inadvertently was thrust into contact with Kopaka's sword. The two merged, and the resulting tool gives the user the power of ice, and the ability to use Kanohi of power! Why this happened and what its consequences will be have yet to be revealed.

Chapter 6

Heatstone

This variant of a lightstone emits both light and heat. It is useful for melting ice and snow that is in the way, or thawing something that has frozen. Heatstones must be periodically recharged, and this is done in Ta-Koro, the village of Fire.

Chapters 7, 8, 9, 10

Huruaka Tablet

Reference entry: [Tools Entry]

These common tablets feature a low-friction writing surface that can be written on with darkchalk pencils, and easily erased by wiping the surface with a cloth, leaf, etc.

Chapter 11

Ko-Koro

Ko-Koro is the village of Ice. Turaga Nuju leads the Ko-Koronans, who live here. The Ko-Koronans patiently awaited the coming of Kopaka, the Toa of Ice and hero of the village, for centuries. Ko-Koro is carved right into the ice in the snowy region of Mata Nui known as Ko-Wahi.

Raitu (Entry 2)

After his Pakari was shattered by a Chogo, Raitu now wears a light blue mask shaped like a Great Lauku mask of Understanding.

Great Lauku Mask of Understanding

Images: [Sketch]

This mask gives the user a greater understanding of puzzles that are solvable based on what the user already knows, and increases the user's awareness of his surroundings, by enabling him to use the full extent of his senses. The user can essentially be aware of things that are happening all around him.

Meeting Hall in Ko-Koro

Images: [Meeting Hall Door]

Like the other Koro, Ko-Koro has a special room designed for secret or public meetings, called the Meeting Hall. The heavy stone door and the thick walls are virtually soundproof. The table inside can seat up to twenty Matoran. Nuju's Turaga Library is behind the small wooden door to the right of the back wall.

Tikuno

Images: [Sketch]

Tikuno is a Ko-Koronan House Builder. It is his job to build ice houses to replace any damaged by Rahi, and to add layers of ice to existing houses after minor melting on sunny days. He lost his left arm in a Rahi raid many years ago, but was able to get a mechanical replacement arm designed in Onu-Koro. Tikuno wears a white Matoran Komau mask of Mind Control.

Wall of Prophecy

The walls of the main temple in Ko-Koro are covered with engravings that concern prophecies and visions of the future. Turaga Nuju, and the adepts of Ko-Koro spend many hours staring at it, trying to learn what it has to say about the future. Most notably, Akohre the Scholar has spent so much time in front of the wall that he has written several versions of an exhaustive guide to its mysteries (For more, see the Writings section of the Culture Reference Page).

Level 2 Btou Staff

Images: [Sketch]

Turaga Nuju has realized that the Btou Staff Toa Kopaka's sword was merged with was not a normal Btou staff, not like a Level 1 Btou Staff. This second level can merge with tools of power! In the case of Kopaka's sword, the resulting tool gives the user ice powers, and the ability to use masks of power.
