How to care for your new reborn baby Updated 9/14/15

Your new doll is a one of a kind original piece of art-work. Please treat it gently!

If your new baby needs repairs PLEASE contact us first. Your artist may be able to fix your doll for free, or advise you on how to safely make repairs yourself. If you attempt repairs without first contacting us you will void the warranty on your doll, and will be charged a fee for repairs.

Thank you for your understanding

Body

Most dolls will have a cloth body, for full vinyl dolls, please see the vinyl section for further details.

  • DO NOT BATHE OR OTHERWISE WASH YOUR DOLL. However, we all must acknowledge that occasionally accidents happen, so spot-cleaning instructions are included at the end of this section.

  • Always support baby’s body like it is a real infant when being held.

  • Do not hold by the hair, arm or leg, irreversible damage may be caused.

  • Do not force doll into unnatural positions, squeeze, drop or bend baby’s vinyl

  • Please supervise children around baby and teach children the proper way to handle baby.

  • Vinyl tushy/tummy plates are used for posing purposes. These plates use “illusion” to help fake the appearance of a tummy/tush on a doll. They are simply extra pieces of vinyl either tucked into diapers/clothing, laid across the cloth body with edges hidden or tied around the cloth body with ribbon to show off a little extra “skin”. Although most plates will not completely hide a cloth body, feel free to get creative-using cute blankets, diapers and front-snapping shirts to help cover the edges of the plate and any cloth body still exposed.

  • Avoid getting your new doll wet. Rain, snow and bathwater can cause mold to form inside the vinyl and cloth body.

  • Glues, inks and adhesives should be kept away from baby, as staining and irreversible damage can occur.

  • When changing baby, treat baby as if he/she were real. Baby is delicate and joints can be popped out of place if clothing is yanked on and off baby’s limbs/head.

  • Spot cleaning instructions

    • SPOT CLEAN ONLY!

    • Scrub gently using a mild detergent or soap, using either a damp cloth (NOT dripping) or a tooth brush (again not dripping).

    • Rinse by dabbing with a damp cloth (not dripping)

    • Dab-dry with cloth or towel.

    • Leave baby unclothed for AT LEAST 24 hours or until spot is completely dry to allow cleaned area and/or stuffing and weighting materials to completely dry

    • DO NOT BLOW DRY-high heat can cause shine and/or melting

    • DO NOT SUBMERGE DOLL IN WATER

Vinyl
  • DO NOT BATHE OR OTHERWISE WASH YOUR DOLL. However, we all must acknowledge that occasionally accidents happen, so spot-cleaning instructions are included at the end of this section.

  • Please keep baby away from fires, hot ovens, hot metal, furnaces, heaters, heating units and long periods of time in the sun. Baby’s vinyl can MELT

  • Glues, inks and adhesives should be kept away from baby, as staining and irreversible damage can occur.

  • Spot cleaning instructions:

    • Spot clean using a mild dish detergent or soap and damp cloth (not dripping). Rinse using the damp cloth to wipe away any soap. Dry with a cloth or towel

    • DO NOT BLOW DRY-High heat can cause baby to become shiny and/or melt

    • Baby soaps/shampoos, and blue dawn dish washing liquid have all been found to be gentle formulas

    • DO NOT SUBMERGE DOLL IN WATER

Hair
  • DO NOT BATHE OR OTHERWISE WASH YOUR DOLL. However, we all must acknowledge that occasionally accidents happen, so spot-cleaning instructions are included at the end of this section.

  • Rooted hair is DELICATE! It is “dead hair” trimmed from a living sheep/goat/alpaca. It can easily be broken or fall out and WILL NOT grow back! Brushing is not advised unless in the case of knots, dust or matting of the hair. It is best to gently wet the hair before brushing using a gentle leave-in conditioner or detangler, and brush using a soft bristle brush

  • Exposure to fires, hot ovens, hot metal, furnaces, heaters, heating units and long periods of time in the sun can melt or soften the glue holding baby’s hair in place-causing baby’s hair to fall out. Heat can also make hair brittle and more likely to break. Please keep baby away from exposure to heat.

  • Glues, inks and adhesives should be kept away from baby, as staining and irreversible damage can occur.

  • Please be aware that is has been noted that clothing moths that are attracted to fabric, are also very fond of mohair and alpaca (the hair used on most reborn dolls). Please check your doll frequently for signs of moths, (eggs or larva) the larva will eat the hair causing damage or the appearance of stubble. It is noted the moths most frequently attach themselves to dolls that are frequently undisturbed and unprotected from moths. Please consider using a moth deterrent if your doll will be stored or displayed undisturbed for long periods of time.

  • Spot-cleaning instructions:

    • FOR HAND-ROOTED OR MICRO-ROOTED HAIR ONLY. Rooted hair looks as if baby has “grown” it. If in doubt, please contact the artist by using the information listed at the bottom of this page.

    • Start by wrapping baby’s body in a towel.

    • Lay baby on his/her back with his/her head over a sink. Slowly rinse baby’s hair using a small cup to pour water over baby’s hair.

    • AVOID GETTING BABY’S CLOTH BODY WET

    • Gently lather baby’s hair using a baby shampoo or other gentle/mild shampoo.

    • Rinse once again using the cup to pour water over baby’s hair

    • Towel dry or style while wet.

    • Baby hair gels, detanglers and leave-in conditioners can also be used to style baby’s hair. Please be sure it is mild and the leave-in variety.

    • If you wish to blow-dry baby’s hair, do so on a low, cool setting. Remember vinyl can melt at high heat-and irreversible heat damage can occur in baby’s hair too!

    • Remember to support baby’s body while washing

    • For Wigs: wigs may be restyled, but extra care should be taken when washing out wigs. Wigs have glue on the outside of baby’s head, and are usually somewhat delicate, based on their construction.

    • For painted hair: see vinyl instructions on spot cleaning.

Clothing and Accessories
  • For MAGNETIC accessories:

    • Such as magnetic hairbows, pacifiers, umbilical cords, or other accessories

    • Magnets used in these reborn dolls are EXTREMELY POWERFUL, they can cause damage if applied to electronics and some medical devices.

    • Use CAUTION when handling baby and/or accessories around electronics, pace-makers, or medical devices that are easily affected by magnets.

    • Avoid allowing baby be handled by people with pace-makers. It is possible that these dolls can be held for short periods of time AWAY from the pace-maker, but to be on the safe side it is best if people with pace-makers DO NOT handle dolls containing magnets. It is possible these magnets can disrupt or cause a pace-maker to cease functioning, which could possibly lead to death. *For those with pace-makers dolls are easily made without magnets, and in some instances magnets can be removed from dolls that contain them.

  • For Putty Pacifiers

    • Poster putty pacifiers are a safer alternative to the magnetic pacifiers, they are safer around electronics and pace-makers.

    • Please DO NOT let children eat putty, it can be toxic. A free stick of poster putty is usually included with putty paci babies. Poster putty can usually be purchased at Wal-Mart or Lowes.

    • To use putty pacifiers: Simply pinch/tear off as mall portion of poster putty, roll it into a ball and place on pacifier where the nipple is usually found. Arrange the putty pacifier with the putty facing the dolls lips in the position you’d like the pacifier to be and simply push the poster putty ball against the doll’s mouth. The pacifier should stay in place for some time.

    • Please do not leave putty on doll’s mouth for extended periods of time, some colored putties may leave stains.

  • Fake juice, fake milk, and other fake bottles and formulas:

    • Some babies may come with baby bottles or sip cups filled with fake juice or fake milk formula. Some settling of the contents may occur over time. Simply shake the bottle until the mix evens out to a nice smooth color.

    • DO NOT remove the nipple, bottle or cup tops or bottle or cup lids, they are sealed with a strong adhesive to help avoid leakage.

    • Leakage may cause damage to your doll or cause stains on other surfaces. Please avoid using bottles/sip cups if leakage occurs.

    • Bottle caps (to protect the bottle nipples) can be removed.

    • These fake formula bottles are NOT for human or animal consumption, and may be hazardous if consumed. DO NOT DRINK OR OTHERWISE CONSUME LIQUID.

    • AVOID ALLOWING CHILDREN OR ANIMALS ACCESS TO FAKE FORMULA BOTTLES

  • Clothing:

    • Avoid unwashed denims and dark colors that may bleed. Bleeding colors and denim colors can seep into the vinyl and cause staining, which can be impossible to remove.

    • Avoid metal bracelets or painted beads. Again colors can cause staining that can be impossible to remove.

    • Please read clothing care instructions on tags of new outfits to see if the clothing is recommended to be washed before worn. If so PLEASE wash clothing at least twice to ensure the colors do not seep into baby’s “skin” or cloth body.

DAMAGES DUE TO INCORRECT CARE ARE NOT COVERED BY OUR FREE REPAIR SERVICE AND VOID THE WARRANTY. THERE WILL BE A FEE FOR REPAIRS OR REPLACEMENTS DUE TO OWNER INCORRECT CARE.

Please feel free to contact your artist if you have any questions or concerns.

Hair Care Dos and Don'ts

Hair Care Instructions

Caring for your new doll's hair

Rooted hair is delicate! It has been trimmed from a living sheep/goat/alpaca, but after trimming it no longer has a source of nutrients so we call it “dead hair”. It can easily be broken or fall out and WILL NOT grow back!

DO NOT:

-DO NOT Brush/style/bathe hair every day. This will cause the fibers to break/fall out of the head and any damages due to brushing, styling or bathing every day is NOT covered by our free repairs policy!

-DO NOT Bathe or otherwise wash your doll! I cannot stress this enough-these dolls were NOT designed to be wet! However, I do acknowledge that the occasional accident will happen, so spot-cleaning instructions will be included at the end of this document.

-DO NOT Expose your doll to fires, hot ovens, hot metals, furnaces, heaters, heating units, long periods of sunlight, high heat of hair dryers or other extremes in temperatures. Extremes in temperatures can cause doll's hair to become brittle, soften the glue, and/or cause the glue to become brittle that hold's the doll's hair in place. This can result in hair loss.

DO:

-Brush using a soft bristled baby brush. Brushing is discouraged unless in the case of knots, dust, or matting of the hair. Some prefer a soft bristle toothbrush.

-Gently wet the hair before brushing. Please use a leave-in conditioner or detangler to wet the hair.

-Do keep all inks, adhesives, glues, markers, pens, paints, dyes, etc away from doll. Staining and irreversible damage can occur.

-Do use gentle, mild or baby hair products

-Keep watch for moths! Certain types of moths that are attracted to clothing fibers may also like the flavor of the mohair and alpaca used on your doll or the fibers of your doll's clothing. This can create hair-loss or the appearance of “stubble” on the doll as the moths eat away the hair, and may also lead to damage of your doll's clothing.

SPOT-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS for hand rooted/micro rooted hair:

-Start by removing clothing from doll and wrapping doll in a towel.

-Lay doll on his/her back with his/her head over a sink. Slowly rinse doll's hair in room temperature water using a small cup (measuring cup works best).

-AVOID GETTING DOLL'S BODY/CLOTHES WET.

-Gently lather doll's hair using a baby shampoo or other gentle/mild shampoo. Avoid making knots if possible.

-Rinse using room temperature water, pouring gently from the cup.

-Towel dry very carefully, again avoid making knots if possible. Brush while wet. To detangle wet hair/long hair: start by brushing the last half inch of hair very close to the ends until that hair is knot free. Next brush the last 1 inch of hair towards the ends until knot free, then the last 1 and ½ inch and so on. Slowly work your way toward the “roots” in this manner until you reach the scalp.

At this stage, doll's hair may be styled. Baby hair gels, detanglers or leave in conditioners may be used to aid in styling.

-If you wish to blow dry doll's hair, do so on a low, cool setting. Remember, vinyl can melt at high heat and irreversible heat damage can occur to dolls' hair and paint too.

-Be careful of the rest of the doll's body while washing!
