THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND

The hero of the game is Guybrush Threepwood, an aspiring pirate from Mêlée Island (deep in the Caribbean). Guybrush is at this stage a naive, bumbling, inexperienced youth, but nevertheless possesses an uncanny enthusiasm and confidence - he can also hold his breath for ten minutes!

In order to fulfil his dream of becoming a full-time pirate, Guybrush must first overcome the legendary challenge of The Three Trials! This involves mastering the three most important aspects of the pirate lifestyle - thievery, treasure hunting and sword fighting. Eventually, with help from many, including Captain Smirk, the Fettucini brothers and an over-obsessive shopkeeper, Guybrush earns his 'stripes' - and it isn't long before he has to call on all his 'piratey' instincts.

Along the way, Guybrush has managed to fall deeply in love with the Governor of Mêlée Island, Elaine Marley. He has also struck up a less loving relationship with the most feared seaman of the Caribbean, the Ghost Pirate LeChuck! Unfortunately, LeChuck has also taken a fancy to Elaine, and plans to marry her - by force. She is duly kidnapped by LeChuck's crew of the undead and taken, by ghost ship, to a secret hideout on Monkey Island.

By this time, Mêlée has been virtually deserted and Guybrush, caught up in his emotions and keen to abuse his newfound power as a pirate, assembles a crew, buys a ship, and sets sail for the distant shores of Monkey Island. After long periods of aimless drifting in the ocean, Guybrush and his crew stumble across their destination, and the search for Elaine begins.

The climate and lifestyle on Monkey Island is far removed from that of Mêlée Island, but Guybrush soon adapts (like any pirate worth his salt should be able to), and following various associations with the likes of Herman Toothrot and the Cannibals, he finds the key to LeChuck's secret hideout far underground. Armed with his magic necklace (courtesy of the Navigator's Head), Guybrush prepares to free Elaine at last, only to learn that she's been taken all the way back to Mêlée Island, where LeChuck intends to marry her!

On arriving back home (armed with his ghost-pulverizing root beer solution), after ruthlessly disposing of numerous innocent members of the undead, Guybrush bursts into the Mêlée Island Church intent on stopping the wedding. Moments later, Elaine descends from a rope, explaining that she'd escaped from LeChuck's grasp long ago, aided by some of her old undead mates - two monkeys appear from under the wedding dress! Having had his initial moment of glory taken from him, Guybrush decides to send LeChuck firing across the night sky (root beer trick). Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley stand together and savour the brilliant spectacle.

MONKEY ISLAND 2: LECHUCK'S REVENGE

Guybrush and Elaine's relationship has by now diminished, and they haven't seen each other in ages. Elaine is now the Governor of Booty Island, and Guybrush has a new and ambitious dream.

He finds himself on Scabb Island, an anarchic part of the Caribbean ruled over by onetime sidekick of LeChuck, Largo LaGrande. After wearing out his 'LeChuck pulverizing' story, Guybrush is in search of a new adventure and sets his sights on discovering the legendary treasure of Big Whoop. Legend has it that the Big Whoop treasure map was split into four pieces and hidden in various locales across the Caribbean. In order to locate the famous map pieces, Guybrush must first get off Scabb Island - a task made more difficult by the fact that Largo has placed an embargo on the island.

High on self-esteem and determination though, Guybrush teams up with the Voodoo Lady to create a voodoo-doll of little Largo, driving him off the island and freeing it from the embargo. Unfortunately, just prior to Largo's departure, Guybrush couldn't resist one final act of victory, waving LeChuck's wiggling blue beard (an appropriate souvenir) in front of him. Largo steals the beard, and Guybrush is reliably informed that the most feared seaman ever to roam the seas is to be resurrected - and will be out for revenge!

Now free to move from one island to another, Guybrush begins his search for the map pieces. Along the way Guybrush is temporarily reunited with Elaine (Mardi Gras), but their chances of resuming a full-time relationship are again dashed when she realizes that Guybrush's priorities lie with Big Whoop. Following numerous conversations, countless calculations and huge slices of luck, Guybrush eventually finds and assembles the four map pieces, and must now venture towards Dinky Island (Big Whoop burial place). Meanwhile, the resurrected LeChuck has been plotting his revenge, and it isn't long before Guybrush's search for undiscovered treasure is rudely interrupted, and he is at the mercy of his archenemy.

In true pirate fashion though, he is able to escape, and following a large explosion at LeChuck's Fortress, awakes on Dinky Island - with Herman Toothrot! The only thing left to do now is locate the 'X' and dig for untold fortune and prosperity. With little help from the philosopher (Herman), and a great deal of help from a local parrot, Guybrush finds the 'X' and digs… and digs… and digs… before falling into an underground cave, where he again comes face-to-face with LeChuck!

A series of voodoo-doll battles ensue, before Guybrush sends LeChuck falling to the ground in crippling pain. LeChuck then begins to plead with Guybrush, stating that the two are actually brothers! Guybrush, confused, proceeds to help LeChuck to his feet and lead him out of the cave. He is then seen as a child with his parents and his brother, Chuckie… at The Big Whoop Fairground! LeChuck had put a strange curse on Guybrush, instigating the 'Big Whoop' hallucination.

THE CURSE OF MONKEY ISLAND

Guybrush has long forgot the strange happenings at 'The Big Whoop Fairground', as he finds himself stranded at sea aboard a tiny makeshift vessel. He's recalling past glories and longing for some food supply when, by pure coincidence, he comes across a giant ship of the undead, lead by none other than the Demon Pirate LeChuck.

LeChuck has Elaine nearby his ship, and once more plans to marry her and have her as his undead wife. Unfortunately for LeChuck, the feeling is not mutual, and Elaine instead declares her love for Guybrush Threepwood! Guybrush's delight is short-lived though, as he is spotted and taken prisoner. Using all his acquired know-how and instinct Guybrush again manages to escape from LeChuck, after overcoming the not very fearsome 'Bloodnose' (Wally in disguise) and breaking through a porthole. He is soon washed-up on Plunder Island with Elaine, and safe in the knowledge that she has expressed her love for him, Guybrush places a huge diamond ring (found on LeChuck's ship) on her finger… she turns to gold - the ring was cursed!

Whilst Guybrush is wandering about on Plunder Island wondering what to do, Elaine (gold) is stolen by Mr. Fossey, Captain LeChimp, and their obedient monkey crew. Thanks to some logical thinking and amazing ventriloquism skills though, Guybrush is able to get rid of them and recover the statue.

On Plunder, Guybrush meets his old friend the Voodoo Lady, who obviously knows about his predicament and informs him that in order to reverse the curse, he must travel to Blood Island and find a pure ring of equal or greater value to the cursed one. So, after finding a map, assembling a crew, and winning a few sea battles aboard the Sea Cucumber, Guybrush puts three sheets to the wind and sets sail for Blood Island.

Finding the ring isn't as easy as first anticipated, but, after a flurry of dodgy dealings, and several mysterious 'deaths', the original ring is replaced by a pure one, and Elaine is freed from the curse. All this time, LeChuck's skeletal crew of the undead have been in search of Guybrush and Elaine, and directly after the curse is lifted, the two are captured and taken to LeChuck's Carnival of the Damned, on Monkey Island.

Here, LeChuck plans to send Elaine through the Roller Coaster of Death, thus transforming her into his undead wife. Guybrush though, driven by the force of love (and the thought of riding a roller coaster), prevails, saving his beloved Elaine and destroying LeChuck… again. Guybrush and Elaine marry and sail off into the Caribbean Sea, congratulated and cheered by many.
