There are many challenges facing the church today. Abortion, homosexuality, denial of an absolute truth, and others all are facing modern Christianity. But probably the greatest of these dangers is one many people wouldn’t think of. It has infiltrated our schools, our homes, the media, and the lives of every person in America and the western world. This ultimate danger is evolution and the morality and worldview that it entails.
The theory of evolution has for a century done irreparable damage to Christianity. Churches have been torn apart from the inside and the essential truth of biblical inerrancy has been challenged like never before. With the idea that humans are nothing more than advanced animals comes the disregard for human life. Abortion is a direct result of the success of evolution in our society.
The doctrine of biblical inerrancy is essential to Christianity. Without the Bible as a firm foundation for our faith, our faith is baseless and easily undermined. And when our faith is undermined, our doctrines begin to fall like dominoes. The first to go was the doctrine of divine creation. Then goes the doctrine of biblical inerrancy. Then, without the Bible to tell us otherwise, we get the idea that all religions are equal, and that ‘all roads lead to salvation’. The Bible clearly states in John 3:18 that “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” The Bible is very clear on this point, but if we have reason to doubt the Bible, then any testimony that the Bible makes is meaningless.
The idea of Biblical error has gone so far that many people believe that the doctrine of biblical inerrancy is not even supported in scripture. I was browsing through a chat room about Christianity, and someone actually said that- that the Bible does not even support the idea of biblical inerrancy. Well, I had to prove him wrong, so I looked through the Thompson Chain Reference, bible studies, concordances, and read a couple books of the Bible looking for verses to support Biblical inerrancy. Here are a few of the verses I found:
2 Timothy 3:16-17: All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Psalms is full of references to biblical inerrancy, in particular, Psalm 119, which has four references alone.
Psalm 119:89- Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
And again:
Psalm 119:160- All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.
And a few other references from both the Old and New Testaments:
2 Samuel 22:31- As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless.
Luke 21:33- Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
And one more:
Proverbs 30:5- Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
The list goes on. Those are just a few of the dozens of verses testifying to the reliability of scripture.
And then there is evolution. Despite what others may say, the Bible does not support evolution. You may hear people say that the word ‘day’ used in Genesis 1 means ‘age’, but why would it mean that in that place and mean ‘day’ everywhere else? The Bible also clearly states in Psalm 19:1 that ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” If the world evolved from nothingness, that would not show God’s power. Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
I believe that this verse is the most powerful biblical testimony against evolution. God’s eternal power has been clearly seen in what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Evolution provides people with an excuse- an excuse to not believe in God.
Evolution and the Bible cannot mix, because they are fundamentally opposed to each other. Evolution was invented for one purpose, and one purpose only- to provide people with an ‘excuse’ to reject God. That is it’s sole purpose. So how can we take something so blatantly and wholly atheistic- and try to work it into the Bible? It goes against everything the Bible teaches, from creation to the sanctity of human life to the very existence of God.
But Christians have tried to work it into the scriptures, and the result has been catastrophic. Churches have been rent asunder and people have been led astray. The church has been made a laughingstock. Fortunately, some denominations, such as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, have taken a stand on the eternal word of God and have resisted the sway toward modernism.
We need to stand on what the Bible says is right, and resist all others who would say otherwise. Most Christians stand united on the topic of abortion, but if we are truly going to fight it, we need to go to the root of the problem, and that is evolution. Evolution teaches that we are nothing more than advanced animals, and that human life is worth nothing more than the life of any sea slug. We need to stand together on the eternal word of God and proclaim its message to a darkened world before it is too late.
