You are most welcome to our site, thank you for visiting.
We are a group of UK and African midwives and doctors, together with their friends and supporters, who are committed to helping our African sisters in overcoming this cruel, harmful and outmoded traditional practice.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, including the clitoris and labia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
One of our initiatives is to hold "Alternative Rite of Passage" (ARP) ceremonies which involves bringing girls together to be educated on the harmful aspects of FGM, early marriage and child bearing.
To date we have held 2 ARP ceremonies with 414 participants. Of these girls only 4 subsequently were subjected to FGM.
Another ARP is being planned for December 2012.
Please see our other pages for photos and videos of our events.
We are also sponsoring Kenyan midwives to train, to do research and are working with traditional birth attendants (TBA's) / circumcisers to raise awareness and change attitudes towards the negative harmful effects of the practice of FGM / circumcision.
If you would like to find out more information on FGM please see our links page for more details.
Thank you again for visiting our site and taking an interest in this most urgent human rights issue for young girls in Africa and the rest of the world where FGM still prevails.
