Bess' Sewing Closet Unlock'd
Garb created for the SCA by Bess Darnley

Welcome

I have been prompted to have my attempts at garb be available to others and to that end - good, bad and otherwise, here are some of the pieces I have worked on over the years.

While corsets are my first love, I have also waded into the world of the Mongol of 1260's and dabbled in other periods of time.

Who Am I?

Good question: I am Mistress Elizabeth Darnley, called Bess. I currently live in the Borough of Readfah Holm, in the Canton of Distant Shores, Barony of Ruantallan, East Kingdom. (Whew!) I am a Laurel for costuming, and a Maunche for the same. I really enjoy the making the patterns aspect of costuming more so than the actual building of the garments, and unfortunately, sometimes that shows in my work. I have tried several needle arts and am proficient at embroidery, crewel, needlepoint, tablet weaving and my new-found passion for quilting and needle felting.

Mundanely I am Sarah Paterson, owner/operator of Blaikie House B&B (www.blaikiehouse.ca). I am a graduate of Dalhousie Costume Studies, with an advanced diploma in Museum Studies which was an education I pursued due to my love of costuming within the SCA, but it is not why I do this - education is as much a tool as a great pair of scissors.
