Opening day goes well for Grasshoppers |
| |
Opening day went as well as anyone would have thought the grasshoppers fared but as Webster said in a press conference shortly after the day. "You can't settle, just because nobody expects us to do well that does not mean we can be satisfied with a below .500 team losing close games. We have the talent to go out there and compete and win games. We have a young team that can scare opposing pitchers and come away with a win every time we step on that field". It's that kind of confidence that led to the Grasshoppers first victory against the Nomads Zach started the game and pitched well enough to give his offense a chance and held off the devil-Dogs until Teddy could show up. Then.. Teddy took over cruising through the powerful lineup of the Devil-Dogs. Every member of the green Mountain team got a homerun in the game. And Zach exploded for four. Game two started with a questionble coaching move in starting "rusty" Sam Webster who had not pitched in a while but did well in his back yard so decided to give himself a shot. It started off as a good move for the grasshoppers as Webster made the powerfull hitters in Alex, and Corey look downright foolish. And in the bottom of that inning the grasshoppers scored two runs. Upset? Not so fast Over-confident sam Webster took the mound in the second inning none on no out and left the game 3 on no out and the score nine to two. But from then on teddy came in and gave the Grasshoppers a shot holding the Nomads to very few runs. But his offense could not cash in. In frustration Toran Granger was quoted as saying 'It seemed like we had the bases loaded every inning we just couldn't come up with the big hit". Then in the fifth inning Sam had the bases loaded with a chance to tie the game with a grand slam but instead grounded out then Zach struck out to end the inning and any comeback hope for the grasshoppers.

P-Bone a Grasshopper |
| |
Today the Green Mountain Grasshoppers have signed top grasshopper prospect Cody Pettibone to a ten day contract worth 5 cents and if and when he signs an extension a spiderman scrathoff for a free whopper Jr. Pettibone is expected to be in the lineup immediately starting at the line while Webster, and Zach Weinfurt will more then likely be Designated hitters. weinfurt was quoted as saying "I don't mind DHing what ever's best for the team and Cody sure can field and i'll be on the field when Teddy's not pitchin'" and in the span of weeks the grasshoppers went from having a horrendous fielding team to a potential gold glove outfielder in Toran Granger and a fielder in Cody "P-Bone" Pettibone who has the knack for making miraculous plays on grounders that other players in the league would not even see. You know they're going to hit and Webster has yet to heat up. And couple that with Teddy pitching this reporter sees a very dangerous Grasshopper team. When they get hot will steam-roll a couple unlucky foes.

2006 lookback |
| |
The beginning of the 2006 BWL season started very promising for the grasshoppers with perhaps the greatest draft in history and perhaps the three greatest busts of all time. The draft was supposed to put the green mountain on the map in the wiffleball world and the Grasshoppers were very pleased to snag J.C Lebarron with their first pick, Josh Cassanno, and James Davidson with their other picks and grabbing hot prospect Matt sweet in free agency and adding him to the Locasses. Well needless to say the day of the draft this was a historic day for the grasshoppers but... Lebarron was never the pitcher the grasshoppers envisioned they'd get with the third pick. They had pick number one but traded it away for Nick Goodrum who was later traded. Top pick in that draft? Rising BWL superstar and dazzling Nomad pitcher Corey Armstrong. Josh Cassanno held out for a bigger contract and was later cut by the grasshoppers. James Davidson was forced to retire after his bout with a nagging knee injury. while the pick after Davidson is one if not the best hitter in wiffleball today Luke Darwell. three can't miss prospects combined for 2 games a .179 AVG 1 HR 6 RBIS 2 K's 11 BB's. Well how'd Sweet do? He spent some time on the big league roster but was later replaced by rising prospect Toran Granger. And Sweet has been on the Vermont state fighting leucoses since then. In retrospect in a draft for the Grasshoppers that was filled with talent and potential only produced one quality player and it was fast rising unknown rookie free agent Toran "Danger" Granger. But all in all this draft was the bust of all busts for the grasshoppers.
