Troop History

      On March 31, 1963, the Win-a-chum Sunday School class of Calvary United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Tuchahoe and North Fourth Street, Bellwood, PA sponsored and chartered Boy Scout Troop #29. Blair S. Hanna became the first Scoutmaster and remained Scoutmaster until 1979. During his sixteen years as Scoutmaster fourteen scouts achieved the highest rank in scouting "Eagle Scout".

     In 1979 Gary A. Detwiler became Scoutmaster of Troop #29 and remained Scoutmaster through 1990 when Steven D. Lucas took over. In 1992 Gary A. Detwiler returned to the Troop again taking the ranes of Scoutmaster. Since then there has been more Scoutmasters including; Chalmar Detwiler, Pat Flynn, Roy Amerhein and Jeff L. Hanna (Current Scoutmaster). Gary A. Detwiler and Jeff L. Hanna started their scouting experince as Scouts in Troop #29 with Blair S. Hanna as their Scoutmaster. Both of them achived the highest rank in Scouting "Eagle Scout". The current Scoutmaster, Jeff L. Hanna, is the son of Blair S. Hanna. 

     On March 31, 2008 Troop # 29 will be celebrating its 45th year in existance. Over this 45 year span the Troop has been very active. The Troop has done the 50 Mile Award by hiking the Appalachain Trail, doing a 50 mile canoe trip and hiking 25 miles of the C&O Canal and canoeing 25 miles of the Shenandoah River. In 1975, 1995 and 2006 the Troop traveled the C&O Canal bicycle trail from Washington DC to Cumberland, MD. This 184 mile trip includes nightly camping, sightseeing and working on advancement toward the Scout's next rank. The troop also attends Summer Camp and has even attend the Boy Scout National Jamboree at Fort AP Hill, VA.

     The Troop has participated in Spring and Fall Camporees, First Aid Meets, and are the current champions of the 2007 Cheif Logan District Klondike Derby and hold the 2007 Klondike Derby Best Sled Award.      To date, over the past 45 years, Troop #29 has had 65 Boy Scouts achive the rank of "Eagle Scout". These boys are the past and future leaders of our community and possibly our country.
