Meanings of The Names
|
Inuyasha:"dog-demon". Quote from Rumiko Takahashi on Inuyasha’s name: "He’s both a dog (inu) and a forest spirit (yasha). There you have it, Inuyasha. Kagome: Quote from Takahashi on Kagome’s name: "...I did a lot of thinking before deciding on Kagome. I wrote down everything that came to mind. Kagome sounded cute. I like names that end with ‘me’, so, for no particular reason, I chose Kagome (laughs)." Unlike most of the other characters, Kagome’s name does not have a literal allusion to something having to do with her character. Takahashi, apparently, just went with what sounded right to her. But if you must know her name means Bamboo mat. Kikyou: Literally means "Chinese Bell-flower, or Balloon-flower". Quote from Takahashi on Kikyou’s name: "The language of flowers was the key. I happened to see a balloon-flower on TV, and its meaning was introduced - ‘unchanging love’. I said, ‘That’s it!’ Shippou: Depending on how it’s spelled and its context, Shippou can mean either "Seven Treasures" or "Tail" (a pun by Takahashi? Shippou certainly does have a cute tail). The Seven Treasures, according to varying legends, were gold, silver, glass, crystal, mother of pearl, coral, and agate, or, gold, silver, agate, amber, emerald, coral, and tortoise shell. They also are listed as Gold, Silver, Pearl, Agate, Crystal, Coral, and Lapis Lazul. Miroku: Japanese name for Maitreya Buddha, or the Buddha of the future. He is also known as ‘The Laughing Buddha’. Sango: Literally, "coral". Coral is actually listed as one of the Seven Precious Things. Among other mystical properties, coral was believed to protect people from evil spirits. Kirara: Literally, "mica". Mica is the name of a group of minerals that contain atoms of aluminum, oxygen, and silicon bonded together in flat sheets. This pertains to Kirara because mica has the properties of not conducting electricity and having a high melting point. In other words, it is able to endure very high temperatures, and since she is a fire neko youkai, that comes into play. Kohaku: "Amber" Kaede: "Maple" Myoga: "Invisible Divine Help" Sesshoumaru: The Inuyasha Art Book lists Sesshoumaru’s name meaning as "Destruction Man".
