Writing in its purest form is an art very much akin to painting. In a body of work, one must have a unity of purpose, usually as an intended effect on the viewer. Just as in painting, the best-written art occurs when one crafts the piece to create a certain idea or feeling in the viewer.
In painting, not only do the color (tone) and thickness of the stroke matter, the placement is essential. In writing, the color would correspond to the tone or connotation of each word, the thickness to the length and sound of each word, and the placement to the relation of each word to the words around it. (Do you see why the cutting off ear guy STUNK? He thought that random scrambled words were poetry.)
When I began writing, I concentrated solely on color. I slapped paint everywhere, allowing each stroke to be as thick or thin as it happened. As I have grown as a writer, I increasingly follow Poe's Principle that each word should be carefully considered, and no useless words be allowed to remain. (however, this is only in my poetry; I have yet to enforce this much in my prose.) More to come... ©Belenen03
