Celtic Rein Equine Rescue & Sanctuary

Their plight, our sorrow….Their pain, our cause

Sapphire and Merrylegs have foaled!!

*Please Note: Both mares came to Celtic Rein already bred.  We do not advocate the breeding of rescued horses.

Sapphire, our rescued OTTB mare, had a gorgeous bay filly

and

Merrylegs, our rescued auction pony, had a beautiful pinto colt 3 days apart from one another!  It was an exhausting month of May, but well worth it!

Welcome to the world Eringobragh & Tristan!

"Eringobragh"

Bay Thoroughbred filly born May 2008

 "Flagthelad" out of "Phylupthecup"

Erin was born during a horrific wind storm - I went to give Sapphire (Phylupthecup) more alfalfa and shut her stall window - when I went to shut it, the wind took it out of my hand and it slammed shut.  When it slammed, Sapphire's water broke!  Alyssa from RERSI was inside watching her on the camera and met me in the hallway to tell me!  We both went running out to the barn and Sapphire was in labor.  We quickly called our friend Kris and thankfully her and her friend Debbie (who just flew into BWI that morning!) made it over in minutes.  Erin's leg was bent backwards and Sapphire was having a tough time delivering her - my heart was in my throat.  Kris did a little repositioning and within seconds, Miss Erin was born.  She laid there for a brief minute and immediately began trying to get on her feet.  This girl was up and nursing within 10 minutes of her birth and hasn't stopped going since!

She is an awesome filly and she is so much fun to work with - challenging, but fun!  Erin is a complete love bug and wants to be involved in everything going on with her people. This kid definitely has a show ring calling - she is gorgeous, athletic and so nicely put together - a future as an eventer or hunter/jumper is definitely in the stars for this extrodinary filly. Sapphire, Erin's dam and a maiden mare, is a fantastic mother and takes excellent care of her little girl.  Sapphire came to us from Philly Park after fracturing her sesamoid.  While she was laid up at her trainer/owners farm, she ended up pregnant by her then 2 Y/0 colt, Flagthelad.

Sincere thanks to:

Alyssa for many long nights of foal watching with us.

Kris for her many, many trips to our barn for false alarms (7 minutes timed! LOL) and especially for safely delivering this gorgeous little girl when Sapphire was finally ready!  It was definitely a looong month, but you guys were great!

Our greatest thanks to Dr. Russ Jacobson, who spent nearly his entire Memorial Day weekend with us at our barn between Sapphire and Merrylegs giving birth just days apart from each other & especially for pulling Erin through a few rough first weeks!  They don't come any better than you!

Carole, Dr. Jacobson's office manager, for patiently answering the phone a million and one times and calming me down, talking me through my concerns and being such a caring person!

"Tristan"

Pinto Miniature/Pony colt born on May 25th to Merrylegs

Tristan was born just a few short days after Erin!  His mom, Merrylegs, is a very no-nonsense kind of mare and at 5 am, just a few short hours before she deliveredTristan, she was standing in her normal "spot" in her stall, one leg resting like always, with Socks (our barn cat) laying behind her in his normal "spot" behind her.  She wasn't fully bagged, never registered on our foal predictor test and showed absolutely no sign that she was going to have her happy little bundle - she delivered him at 7 that morning!  I went in to dunk his umbilical cord and Merry was great about it - a few minutes later, Alyssa and I went in to give Tris his enema and Merry tried to kill us, lol! Granted, at only 10 hands it wasn't horrible, but those short legs can really pack some power when this girl isn't happy! She was extremely protective of her little boy the first few days and was even leary of me touching him (her favorite person!), but has since allowed us to do anything and everything with her sweet foal.  Thanks goodness!  She has been an amazing mom!

Little Tristan is the sweetest baby I have ever met and has been this way since the day he was born.  His mom, Merrylegs is one tough cookie and very much a one person pony, but this little guy is the complete opposite. Tristan is a pleasure to work with and absolutely adores people!  He stands for the farrier, fly sprays, walks well on the lead, squares and loves to play.  He races our cars as we pull in the driveway and doesn't stop "talking" to you!  He's the best!

Celtic Rein Equine Rescue & Sanctuary would like to ask all horse owners to please be very cautious when placing/re-homing your horse(s).  The video below is extremely graphic & contains actual footage inside of a Mexican Slaughter plant.

Sadly, many American horses sold through auction and dealers end up being transported to Mexico for slaughter.
