The Note in the locket
After the death of Dumbledore, the locket falls from his pocket and opens. Harry has believed up until then in the authenticity of the locket as a Horcrux. However, he finds within it only a note signed R.A.B. informing him that the real Horcrux has been removed and the one currently in his possesion is a fake:
To the Dark Lord
I know I will be dead long before you read this
but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret.
I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can.
I face death in the hope that when you meet your match,
you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B.
A Code?
Is it possible that the note from R.A.B. is in some kind of code?
It may be that the letters R.A.B. are not initials but a clue as to the way in which to read the code.
Possibly this note will be a good source of information to Harry as to where the other Horcruxes are, if it is in code.
Rookwood, Avery, Bode
It is possible that R.A.B. is not one person, but three people by the names of Rookwood, Avery and Bode.
In "Order of the Phoenix," one of Harry's dreams, in which he is Voldemort, heavily involves these three people and their names appear together on one page (pg. 516).
Without knowledge of the initials R.A.B., JKR's purpose in creating this dream seems only to be in emphasizing the strength of the bond between Harry and Voldemort and to give a small insight into the character of Voldemort and his doings.
However, it seems too much of a coincidence to have three names beginning with R, A and B on one page without there being any significance to the note in the locket.
JKR is likely leaving a clue here although it may be a coincidence or a red-herring.
The information we are given about the character of Rookwood is little. His first name is now a certainty although there was previously some confusion as during Karkaroff's trial in "Goblet of Fire," he accusses someone of the name of Augustus Rookwood of the Department of Mysteries but in "Order of the Phoenix," it is reported on the front page of the daily prophet that a man called Algernon Rookwood, convicted of leaking Ministry of Magic secrets to Voldemort, has escaped from Azkaban. It was later confirmed that Rookwood's name was given wrongly in "Order of the Phoenix" and that he is in fact AUgustus Rookwood.
Assuming these two people are actually the same men and that JKR made a mistake, we know the following infomation on Rookwood:
- He pretended he had turned away from Voldemort after his fall.
- He worked for the Department of Mysteries
- The Ministry of Magic were surprised when he was accused by Karkaroff.
- He was arrested and imprisoned in Azkaban for leaking Ministry information to Voldemort.
- He escaped in "Order of the Phoenix along with ten other convicted death eaters.
- He is described: "a pockmarked man with greasy hair" and "his scars were thrown into relief by the candlelight."
- He obviously has close knowledge of Avery and Bode since he reports their activities to Voldemort.
We know less information about Avery:
- He too abandoned Voldemort after his fall.
- On Voldemort's return, he begged for forgiveness and was put under the cruciatus curse.
- Avery wrongly informed Voldemort about Bode's ability to obtain the "weopon" in "Order of the Phoenix."
Broderick Bode:
- He worked for the Department of Mysteries.
- He was under Lucius Malfoy's imperius curse so that he would remove the prophecy from the department but he knew he was unable to so he fought hard against it.
- He is recovering from his mind-loss and knows Voldemort's plans so is purposely killed through a cutting of the plant Devil's Snare.
There is evidence in Harry's dream that these three people knew the activities of one another very well.
It seems as though Rookwood is very a significant character as Karkaroff’s accusation of him is shown in the recent film, “Goblet of Fire,” whereas the accusations of most others he accused in the book have been omitted, as have the entire trial of the Lestranges’. Both Rookwood and Avery turned away from Voldemort at the time of his fall and Bode was never a death eater. They had almost thirteen years in which they could have removed the necklace Horcrux. In the graveyard on the night of his return, Voldemort makes a speech which seems to imply that the death eaters knew that he had made at least one Horcrux, if not more:
"They, who knew the steps I took, long ago, to guard myself against mortal death..."
If this was so, then Rookwood and Avery would have had a chance to seek the locket Horcrux with Bode.
Horcrux opposite
Concerning the "three people" theory... We know that the Horcruxes are used in order to split a person's soul into pieces. What if there were a way to fuse multiple souls into one essence? Perhaps at the risk of a massively diminished lifespan, which may explain why RAB was concerned with the fact that he/she would be dead soon?
Naturally, not many wizards on their own would be able to destroy a Horcrux on their own. Dumbledore himself obviously had enough trouble even getting to the locket, its certainly possible that whoever the possible three may be needed to combine their powers in a sort of metaconcert to destroy the Horcruxes? Rabastan Lestrange
There is a theory that R.A.B. are not initials but rather the first part of the name "Rabastan." Rabastan Lestrange was the brother-in-law of Bellatrix Lestrange and was convicted along with her, his brother Rodolphus, and Barty Crouch juniour.
Two people?
R.A.B. is possibly two people as it seemed impossible for one person to obtain the horcrux at which the note signed R.A.B. was left. The "A" may only stand for "and."
Regulas Black
The most likely person to hold the identity of R.A.B. appears to be Regulus Black, cousin of Sirius. He is know to have been killed on Voldemort's orders but to be of too little importance to have been killed by Voldemort himself.
In different translations of "Half-Blood Prince," the R.A.B. appears differently. In one translation, the B in R.A.B. has been changed to a Z and in another, to an S.
In these translations, the name of "Black" has been changed to one starting with "Z" and "S" respectively.
