My Story

I was born on a bright and sunny day on August 2,1989 in West Jersey Hospital which is in Voorheese New Jersey USA. I grew up in a normal family, just me, my Mom, my dad, my brother, and my cats. The only real health problems in my family was cancer on my dads side of the family, asthma on my brothers side, and nothing on my mothers side. The only thing that was wrong with me was I had swimmers ear. That was it....until the summer of 2000 on my 11th birthday. At about a week before my b-day my eyes became bloodshot and they had a crusty substance that would stick my eyes together and I would not be able to open them. I started developing oral ulcers. My regular pediatrician thought it was foot and mouth disease so she gave me something called magic mouthwash which was malox, Benadryl, and lidocane. But this didn't help at all so my Mom took me to Kennedy Memorial Hospital. They didn't do very much until they decided to send me to West Jersey Memorial Hospital. They treated me with Prednisone, Trental and Colcohchine. But this didn't help any so about 2 weeks after being transferred to West Jersey hospital they decided to transfer me to The Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP) where I was seen by Dr.Berhnheim, and Dr.Albert which were from Ruematology. After about another week there my flair settled down and I began to eat so they discharged me. Before I was on prednisone i weighed about 110. After being on the prednisone for a while I gained about 30 pounds. About a year after that I just stopped taking my medicine...and I didn't have a flair for over 6 months...Until march of 2003. But I'm absolutely better now except for the fact that i still have swimmers ear and may need a third set of tubes...But at least its better than a flair...If you want to know anything about my story that i didn't add leave a message on the guestbook.

Update 09/05/2007:
I'm now 18 and starting college. Throughout my high school years flairs weren't a very big deal. The mouth ulcers do get bad sometimes, but nothing major or requiring hospitalization. We also recently learned that vanilla sets off my flairs and if it's vanilla toothpaste, then forget it, I'm done for. I've currently been working as a pre-school teacher and life is pretty good. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. - Brittany
