Fancy's Airhead (aka Flaire)
May 4, 1987 - July 10, 2006
My 19 year old Quarter Horse Mare "Fancy’s Airhead" (Flaire) was laid to rest July 10th, 2006. She was completely healthy right up until the end.
Flaire and I met 19 years ago when she was born on our farm. She was not a typical quarter horse. At 3 months of age we lost her dam to colic and little Flaire grew up with Uncle Buck. At 3 years of age Flaire, and I entered our first of many local shows. Since I was the one that broke her out and showed her, I knew all her quirks. Even at times when I didn’t want to ride, she was there for me to go for a ride. If I was having a bad day, Mom just had to take one look at Flaire and know what kind of mood I was in. Good and bad times she was always there for me. Whether it was a gallop out in the fields or a quiet ride down the road she was the mare to go on. It was this bond that kept Flaire and I together for all these years and it was this bond that helped me make the tough decision to let her go and be in peace. Once retired from the show ring, Flaire did go on to become a great start to the broodmare band. She was the founder of the band and we had 3 wonderful geldings out of her. My dream with her was to have a filly to carry her on but it just wasn’t in the cards for me. 2 of her geldings can still be seen competing in
She was a neck to cry on when I was going thru difficult teen times then bad relationships. She was a joy to own, a pleasure and challenge to ride.
I'd done mostly local Hunter shows with her but we'd never pass up a chance to run barrels or putter around in western attire.
Over the years she'd been around a bit as she'd move when I did. We were at Bedrock Acres in
Flaire was full of spirit right up until the very end generally displaying the spirit of a 3 year old...not a 19 year old.
She is missed greatly and will always have a special place in our hearts. Flaire was the horse of a lifetime for me and I thank her so much for everything good and bad that she taught me. She brought my husband and I together and was very much part of the entire family. Even my Mom came to say a final good-bye to her.
Cheers to Flaire!
