My son, Joshua, was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis on his 3rd birthday, October 5, 2004. He'd been showing signs that something was wrong for 7 months, but his pediatrician, at the time, coughed it up to being a "milk allergy". Months & months went by, yet he did not improve. We eventually had to BEG for a referral to a specialist. Finally, in September 2004, we saw a GI specialist at Children's Hospital in Boston. The GI Dr. initially seemed to think it was just a small issue that could be cleared up, but after a closer look at his lab results we got the call...
The night before Joshua & his twin brother, Justin's 3rd Birthday Party, we got a call that Joshua would need to be admitted into Children's Hospital for a few days of testing. On Monday, Joshua and I started our stay in the hospital. That was an experience I will never forget....but through all of the tubs, needles, medications, doctors, coloscopy and endoscopies, x-rays and other procedures...Josh's beautiful spirit still shined through....that big smile and sweet face were about the only things that got me through our stay.
On his birthday, October 5th, we were given an official diagnosis, Ulcerative Colitis. And so our journey began....
Josh has good days and bad days, but his beauty and strength is always present.
