Hi everyone,
I’m delighted
to be involved with Alternative Hair and am really looking forward to
performing one of my new songs inspired by survival at the
show.
I was diagnosed with
Hodgkin’s lymphoma when I was 18, in 2003.
When
I first heard the news I went into shock. I knew that cancer happened
to younger people, but never believed it would happen to me. I can't
describe how scared I was - I bawled my eyes out for days. And as well
as your own pain you’re hurt by the pain others feel.
I had an
operation and then for a year, underwent chemotherapy, radiation and
steroid treatment. It was tough. I remember one day staring out of the
window, longing to be able to just go for a walk and get a coffee. My
face had a green tinge and my hair was falling out. I had lost so much
weight and I thought, "I don't recognise this person". And as well as
your own pain you’re hurt by the pain others feel.
So I think
it’s quite appropriate that my first task with Leukaemia Research is
about hair. I’d always had long hair and, until you lose it, I don’t
think you realise just how important it is to your identity.
But
I know that I’m one of the lucky ones. Thanks to successful treatment,
I recovered - and now I’m passionate about helping people with lymphoma
and other blood cancers, which is why I’m supporting Leukaemia Research
and their work into improving treatments, finding cures and preventing
blood cancers. I have been involved in my own charity The Delta Goodrem
Leukaemia and Lymphoma Trust Fund in Australia and now that I spend
more time in the UK I am thrilled to be involved in raising money for
research over here.
I hope you’ll be able to join me at the Show, or that you’ll be able to
support it by making a donation.
May you have happy days filled with love and light.
