The Season

The Bears looked to build on their solid first season display in the Rhoper Rhodes League 2 and suffered a shock 6 - 0 opening day defeat to league newcomers Wick F.C. This seemed to be the wake up call needed as the team went on to produce an incredible run of form winning the following 6 matches scoring 36 goals only to concede 6. This was to set the foundations for a sucessful season.

A fine cup run saw the Bears play 14 games prior to Christmas of which only 6 were in the league. The Somerset Cup proved to be a favourite and fine victories against West Wanderers (Weson-S-Mare), Staplegrove Sports (Taunton) and Spaxton Rangers (Taunton) all away from home, set up a mouth-watering quarter final tie against defending champions Perfecto Allstars. A harsh red card early on for shot stopper and captain Stuart Mason proved to be too much for the Bears who eventually went down fighting 3 - 0.

That cup run showed what could be done and it was to be a flawless set of results in the Stan Milsom Cup which saw the Bears reach their first ever cup final played at Twerton Park, Bath in front of 200 onlookers. The build up to the final saw the Bears beat 3 Division 1 teams to set up a tie with Division 1 champions Marshfield Nelson. In a close fought game in which Marshfield led, the Bears played some good football and at times showed that they were a close match for the champions before being closely edged out 2 -1.

The fine cup runs meant that there was to be a backlog of 8 games to fit into the final month of the season, and with some players unavailable in the evening matches due to work, the Bears produced a solid set of results winning 4 drawing 2 and losing 2 games in 21 days to finish a strong 4th in the table.

On the ins and outs front, Alex McClean made a return to the squad following several seasons away and scored 28 valuable gaols in 28 appearences. It was to be a debut season for Gavin Ferris and Kev Clarke and Marc Fry sadly left the club to concentrate on work commitments. Daniel Norris returned to action in several end of season games and key man Chris Young continued his fine goalscoring record netting 31 times in 27 games. Who knows how many more he could have scored had he not been victim of a horrific and sickening assault off of the field that left him unable to play in 5 matches at the end of the season.

Veteran defender Nairn Pierre was to be the only member of the squad to play in every game of the season and was a key player at the heart of the defence.

Another fine season, and with these notable improvements from the previous season, I am sure there will be a few expectations for the coming year.

The Season

The 2005/06 season, proved to be tough and challenging for the promotion winning Bears. It was to be a season full of incident, which never really got going due to several key events.

Firstly came the disruption in the fixture schedule which saw only 6 league games played in the first 16 weeks of the Bears season. This started poorly with a 3 - 4 opening game defeat to newly promoted and eventual 2005/06 league winners Milan Bath, but improved for the 3 games that followed seeing the Bears take 9 points from the first 12 to place them third in League 2. This run was then halted by the disruption in fixtures and when the games became more regular in mid-January, the Bears found it hard to match the teams who had played regular competitive league 2 football for the previous three months. The season ended with the Bears having to play 8 games in just over 4 weeks which saw them take half the points from them.

The Bears lost several key players during the season. Club captain and central defender Dan Norris was forced out of action against Claverton Villa in February with a knee injury which left him on crutches missing the final 10 league games of the season and left a gap that needed to be filled at the back.

Key striker Chris Young, who had 116 goals in 114 games prior to the start of the season added to his remarkable tally winning the golden boot with 23 goals in 16 games. He was also sorely missed however for 8 matches whilst out with injury. He ended the season with an impressive 139 goals in 130 league and cup matches for the club.

The season also saw several ins and outs. James Hencher, Jon Book and Stu Hunter all decided that their futures were best served away from the club and left during the early stages of the season. They were all replaced quickly with the arrivals of Adam Hill, Stu Musselle, and during the latter stage of the season Paul Wood who all became key players. Ian Gunning also returned to cement his place in the team following his year out travelling.

16 years of age at the start of the season, Adam Hill proved to be a very good signing for the club, playing 19 of the 24 matches, scoring 1 goal and winning the award for Most Improved Player at the end of season presentation. It was the second youngest player, Rich Hurd who won a place in the Bath and District under 18's team and took the award of Players Player of the season. Established goalkeeper Stuart Mason was crowned managers player of the season.

The Bears can be satisfied to have finished 7th in league 2 in their first year and will look to improve their league position in the 2006/07 season.

The Season

The 2004/05 season saw the arrival and departure of several players. Club regular, Ian Gunning departed for a season touring Australia. Inspirational club captain Daniel Norris returned for his first full season in three years following a spell at Cheltenham University. James Hencher and John Book both signed for their first season with the Bears.

The season started well with a 2-1 win over league newcomers FC Porter. A penalty shootout, cup victory over Real Batheaston made it two wins from two matches and from this point the Bears never looked back, regularly gaining points in crucial games.

Bear completed their final game of the season with a 3-1 victory over Bath Arsenal to make it 10 wins from 10 matches taking a maximum 30 points from 30. Unfortunately this was not enough to stop rivals Claverton Villa being crowned Champions of the division beating the Bears to the title on goal difference.

The season saw the first player to score 100 senior club goals with Chris Young flying over the century marker. (Young is pictured above receiving his award from manager Phil Gunning). Young finished the season with 32 goals to his name, taking his tally for the club to 116 goals in 114 appearances.
