So here are a few words of my memories of Les.
" I recall the first few times I played with Les. He was easy-going in that he had so much ability and was such a natural athlete that he made the game look easy. Tall, very strong in the air, great mobility, two good feet ( he sometimes played " up-front" with some success), and capable of very hard ( but fair) tackles that might well have been penalised in these days of powder -puff play .I recall Les was 1St XI skipper several times and also played for a short period with Ilford F.C where he easily met the Senior Amateur ( now Semi-Pro) standard. I remember two particular goals Les scored that will always stick in my mind. Firstly, a cup semi-Final. A free-kick taken a few yards into the opposition half, wide on the right. The ball was hit hard in the air towards the penalty spot. Les ran 20yards in from the wide left and headed the ball like a rocket into the top right hand corner of the goal , then jogged away with just a grin , as if it was that easy ! Secondly, a 1st XI League Cup-Final against Mill Hill Village at Old Monovians ground . We were at 1-1 when a free kick was awarded 25 yards out on the right. The defence put up a wall. The late Ted Taylor ( a close friend of Les ) feinted to shoot, then chipped the ball over the wall. Les loped in , fast, then, seeing the goal keeper advancing, cushioned his header over him into the net. We ended up 3-2 winners. After the game , and once we had battled past a crowd of very inebriated Old Beals ( Abbot Ale, I believe) I asked Les about the goal. "" Well, he said, I saw the keeper coming, ,so I winked at him, headed it , then waved the ball into the net and said , bye , bye w-nk-r !"" .
So much for the football. Regardless of whether Les was a great or poor player he was a good clubman &
I will always be glad I knew him. His laconic, mischievous sense of humour, his easy-going approach to life, that always ready grin, the wink when he succeeded on the pitch ,will I'm sure stay in the minds
of all that knew him........R.I.P. Les "

I had been writing to a very Old Bealonian for some years now and Graham Barker was doing the same before me. His name was Len Perry, he went to Beal School I believe and I think he was in his eighties. I have just been informed by his wife that he died peacefully on December 3rd 2007.
I had been writing about 3-4 months apart and used to send him copies of the Toerag as well to peruse through and he always replied by letter. This was until last year when he would phone me as soon as he recieved my letter, this was due to age and illness and he couldn't wite anymore. He always followed the 1st XI through the paper and teletext results and sometimes informed me of some of the results. He was still active though as he used to tell me how he walked his dog down by the sea. A sad moment I'm sure you will agree, the end of another era I'm afraid.

" We are pleased to announce that John Butler has been made 1st team
skipper for the season and that he has accepted the role accordingly.
John is a key player for the first team and has shown great leadership
qualities in recent seasons, hence why we have made this decision.
He has played for the AFC representative side over the
last 12 months and was also 1st team player of the year, as voted for by
his fellow team-mates.
We would also like to thank David Gould for his immense contribution to
the first team cause over the last 8-9 years.. He has and remains a good
player and servant for the club, and will continue to be a committed
club player/member going forward. David was a key figure in helping the
first team become the respected side in the AFC it now is. I hope you
join us all in thanking David for his contribution as captain, and
wishing John all the best in his future role."
