Tracks and track designs

Mid size 3.6 x 1.8 table track ideas

These designs were drawn using a free program called Emachine - http://www.emachineshop.com/machine-shop/index.php  (12mb download)  it is a reletively easy program to learn and it has video tutorials to teach you how to use it . It is meant so you can draw up accurate engineering type diagrams for machining so the program regularly updates itself with a price file - this is only used if you should want a quote from the Emachine people to actaully make a product for you .

I have found it to be a great program for drawing up tracks as well as many other items such as house extensions and slot car chassis, you can view a drawing in 3D if its drawn correctly - emachine help files and hints will correct a drawing easily if you have any errors.  If you want to save a picture to view it or send a picture to someone that doesn't have the emachine program select  ( -shift button -print screen then open microsoft paint and select paste ) from there the image you have drawn can be saved as a bitmap or JPEG so you can send it via email easily.  I have no autocad training or architectural drawing background but managed to use the program , so have a go at it yourself .

A few track designs based on smaller table sizes 3 or

4 lane layouts around the size of a ping pong table

Using 3 base sheets 1.8 x 1.2 .    Total table size is no larger than 3.6 x 1.8

Simple layout with a 3 metre long straight running diagonally across the table

A little more complex with a bridge overpass (not drawn in)

Based on 3 sheets 1.5 x 1.2 but slightly narrower total table size 3.6 x 1.5

This would work with the long straight against a wall

Based around the idea above but slightly wider table size total table size 3.6 x 1.8 - bridge not drawn in

Small area Rally type tracks

Rally track and Drift track ideas - for small areas these ideas are based around a 1 or 2 lane track.

Timing hardware from a large manufacturer of "plastic" track could be adapted or set into the timber track to allow for some simple lap timing - If the piece of plastic track that houses the timing hardware was to be recessed into the track to become part of the lane. A plastic track power supply could also be adapted to run these smaller layouts

This track is based on a 2.4 x 1.2 sheet  ( 1 lane )

This idea below is based on a 1.8 x 1.2 table size where the driving station / area is in the cut out section which allows an easy reach over the track to grab a de slotted car . The design could be adapted to 2.4 x 1.8 and two lanes it could allow two kids side by side in the driving area . Some areas of the track layout will need the two lanes to squeeze in tight together to fit in the shape and widen out in some areas to allow cars to pass each other

Small area Drift tracks

These are some ideas for a very small 1 or 2 lane track - Small tracks that can be stored under the bed , these small trackdesigns are suitable for the 1/32 scale drift cars that slide on the track surface and have a flag system that allows the power contact point / flag to spin 360 degrees . The idea could easily be scaled up to a larger size but the drawings are based around a 1.2 x 1.2 table size again a "plastic" track power supply and timing system could be adapted into the track layout . The general idea would be to keep the lanes running as close to the inside of the corners and set as much space between the lanes as possible so the cars can slide through the corners and fishtail along the straights without hitting each other .

The pictures below are based on the track idea above with nothing more than a different track layout that has a bridge overpass in it or wider corners. The area that the drivers would be sitting is ideally at the bottom edge of these pictures .

This idea is set out to have a longer sweeping drift corner then 3 switch back style corners , good for teaching kids some throttle control before they get onto a larger track with the bigger kids

Just another variation of a continuous drift through corners and can be run in either direction. but best is to enter under the bridge then slide around and over the bridge.

larger 2 lane rally track

Based on an "L" shape made from a few sheets of MDF (3.6 x 1.2) - (2.4 x 1.2) plus a (3.6 x 300mm) strip that adds onto the side of the 3.6 x 1.2 sheet to widen it out . This would be a two lane rally track the extra area width in some sections would allow the two cars to slide around each other through the corners , there are also a couple of places where the track would squeeze in a bit tighter , the cars could still run side by side and pass each other. The reason for the squeeze is to fit as much track onto the area . The little squares represent cars in various places throughout the track , the bridges overpass is not drawn in place , the lanes could pass under or over at the intersection.   The design was drawn using a free program called "Emachine" This link should take you to the site to down load it .
