Knightdale Grandmother Sets Sights on Cyberspace Safety

Mary Conyers came out of retirement with one goal in mind: To keep kids safe online. She got the idea after watching her own granddaughters try to navigate the treacherous virtual waters of cyberspace.

So far, the Knightdale grandmother has started a non-profit called "Protect Every Child, which has distributed hundreds of free DVDs to help schools and parents educate their kids about being safe online.

The DVD includes the basics — don't talk to strangers and don't share personal information. These rules seem simple, but young computer-users violate them every day.

One girl who won’t violate those rules is Conyers’ 16-year-old granddaughter, Whitney.

“I pretty much keep my stuff private and try not to put out too much information,” Whitney said. “I don't talk to anyone I don't know. All my friends on my buddy list are people I know from school and stuff.”

As Conyers sees it, parents protect their children in many other areas of life, but not enough when it comes to the Internet.

“You wouldn't let your son or daughter leave the driveway until they know all of the rules about driving and make sure they follow them,” she said. “The same thing is true of the Internet.

Conyers believes the Internet has become a virtual playground for child sex offenders.

There's no way that law enforcement can ever catch every sex offender or online predator. I think we've got to do that through the kids. They can slam the door and lock it, she said.

Conyers said she has received 600 requests for the DVD in the past three weeks from 41 states and several other countries. She is trying to raise money to accommodate everyone.

We would appreciate all of the help you can give us in educating kids about online safety! I am sorry you could not register for our newsletter. We were having so much trouble with spam coming through that link we had to take off the registration link that came to me. I was getting 25 and 30 emails a day and more through that link that were very graphic and definitely spam!  I have not been able to send a newsletter in months because of the expense.  All of the funds I raise must go into producing "Safety On The Internet" until we receive enough funding to handle both.
For five years I lobbied to change the law moving all pornography to a .XXX Top Level Web Domain.  It went as far as a bill being introduced to the USSenate by a Senator from
MontanaIt finally died and they are working on it from a different angle.  In the meantime, my work on educating kids about online safety through my "Safety On The Internet" program became a priority for my organization.  In order to grow, I had to make the decision to make Protect Every Child a non-profit, 501 (c) (3), organization.  Doing that meant that I could no longer lobby for changes in legislation.  A couple from Smithfield took over that part of my work and formed an organization called Kids Come First Online,

http://www.kidscomefirstonline.org

They have done a wonderful job in working on this.  I had collected more than 8,000 signatures for .XXX before handing it over to them.  They will stay with this new bill until something happens with it.

I believe the only way we will ever keep online predators from reaching our kids is to educate every child about how to use the Internet safely.  Law enforcement will never catch all of these pedophiles. Kids hold the key to locking them out!!!

I would be grateful for any publicity you can give us through your websites. We have received requests and mailed more than 700 copies of our program since April 17th to 41 states and countries outside of the US.  My goal is to send it to every school system, church, law enforcement or group that will use it to educate kids and their parents free of charge.  A big goal of our organization is to make certain it is sent to every school for the deaf and the blind.

Thank you for writing and thank you for anything you can do to help.

Mary Conyers

fighting to push through the

Cyber Tipline NCMEC operates a CyberTipline at www.cybertipline.com that allows parents and children to report child pornography and sexual exploitation of children by submitting an online form. This form is then reviewed by analysts and forwarded to law enforcement including the FBI, the U.S. Customs Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and state and local police agencies.

Individual FBI Field Offices serve as primary points of contact for persons requesting FBI assistance. For further information about FBI services or to request assistance, please contact a Crimes Against Children Coordinator at your local
FBI Field Office.

Another excellent, helpful site is: http://www.cyberangels.org

Recently I came across them because I was looking for a place to report an incident. I was doing an online search for a local skateboard park where my children could play. I thank God they weren't standing by my shoulder as they so often are, because the innocent looking link I clicked on brought up a page from Adult Friend Finder which was full of naked women involved in sexual acts. Quite a shock when you're expecting to see information on skateboarding! The page was also full of various links to things like skateboard parks, parks & recreation, etc. so that I'm sure many others will accidentally come across it & I only hope it's not a child. I forwarded the information to Cyber Angels & also to 2 local police departments. I haven't heard from anyone but I hope they are investigating. What a horrible way for a young child to learn about what goes on between men & women.

Sex offender off registry

  GATHINGS.MICHAEL

By Sarah Ovaska, Staff Writer

A Wake County judge granted one convicted sex offender’s request to be removed from North Carolina’s sex offender registry during a hearing this morning.

The offender, Michael Anthony Gathings, 43, was convicted of indecency with a child in 1992 after admitting that he had sex with a 7-year-old girl he was babysitting.

Gathings now lives in Raleigh and is married with a 5-year-old daughter, he told Wake Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner.

He spent four years in a Texas prison for his crime, before moving to North Carolina in 1997. At the prison, he underwent intensive therapy to rehabilitate himself, he said.

“What I did is disgusting to me,” Gathings testified in court. “It’s hard for me to even talk about.”

Only two other people in the state, from Wake and Mecklenburg counties, have successfully petitioned judges for removal since December, according to the N.C. Attorney General’s Office, which maintains the registry. That’s when a new law went into effect requiring certain convicted sex offenders to ask a judge if they can be taken of the registry after 10 years. Beforehand, they were automatically removed if they hadn’t committed other sex crimes.

Gathings was one of four men who asked Gessner to be taken off the list. The others are Lemuel A. Banks, a 38-year-old convicted of trying to rape a neighbor; Purvis Michael Dunn Jr., 40, who touched the breasts of a 13-year-old relative; and Shimel K. Draughon, a now-31-year-old man who was 20 when he had consensual sex with a 13-year-old girl, according to police accounts of the crimes.

I bet it's even harder for his victim to talk about it. I wonder, does the judge have a daughter. Maybe he'd like to have Mr. Gathings as his next door neighbor!

13-Year-Old Sexually Assaulted During Sleepover - Statutory rape and indecent liberties charges have been filed against a Johnston County man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.  It happened in April, authorities said, when the young girl spent the night with the man's stepdaughter.  During the night, Brian Michael Blakeman, 40, of Pinto Lane , Zebulon (near the Johnston-Wake County line) allegedly assaulted the girl.  Following an investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Blakeman was arrested Thursday. He was placed in jail under a $140,000 bond.

2 Fayetteville Men Charged With Child Sex Crimes

Posted May 24, 2007

Fayetteville - Sheriff's deputies Thursday charged two men with sex crimes against children in unrelated incidents.

Daniel Buczkowski, 51, was arrested at his home after concerned citizens alerted authorities about his alleged relationship with his 10-year old victim. Investigators later discovered inappropriate pictures involving children on his home computer and more charges may be forthcoming.

Buczkowski is charged with first degree forcible rape, first degree forcible sexual offense and taking indecent liberties with a minor. He was held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond and scheduled for a court appearance Friday.

Deputies arrested Terry Lee Bilodeau, 31, and charged him with kidnapping and raping an 11-year old girl. Investigators said they learned about Bilodeau after the victim disclosed information about the assault to her mother.

Charges against Bilodeau were first degree statutory rape, first degree statutory sex offense, first degree kidnapping, child abuse sexual act, taking indecent liberties with a child and incest.
Bilodeau also was held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $150,300 secured bond and scheduled for arraignment at the same time as Buczkowski.

Man Charged With Molesting Two Neighborhood Children - A Clayton man is charged with molesting two neighborhood children.  The incidents allegedly began two years ago when the victims were just 4 and 6 years old. Gerald Pinkerton, 67, of Barber Mill Road , was arrested Wednesday. He is charged with taking indecent liberties with a child and two counts of first-degree sex offense. Relatives of one of the children became suspicious about the unemployed man and his interest at having the children play at his home. Following an investigation by social workers and sheriff’s detectives, Pinkerton was arrested. Tammy Amaon, spokesperson for the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, said Pinkerton was arrested on sex charges in 1986, but it was before the sex offender registry was created in North Carolina .  He is now in the Johnston County Jail under a $150,000 bond.

Teen Charged With Raping 3-Year-Old Girl - Johnston County authorities have charged a Clayton teenager with taking indecent liberties with a 3-year-old girl.  Authorities said the victim’s parents met 17-year-old Chaz Aaron Paquette through their church in Cary two years ago.  They befriended the troubled teen, took him into their home, and even became his guardians.  On January 3, sheriff’s investigators said the girl reportedly confided in her mother she had been inappropriately touched.  On Tuesday, detectives arrested Paquette on charges of first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense.  Sheriff’s office spokesperson Tammy Amaon said the alleged assaults had occurred over a period of time.  Paquette was jailed under a $250,000 bond.

He spotted the young girl on the front porch and asked her for sex. She refused and went inside and locked the door. U.S. MARSHALS ADD CONVICTED KILLER AND SEXUAL
PREDATOR TO “15 MOST WANTED” LIST
Reward of up to $25,000 being offered for arrest of Paul Clouston

15 Most Wanted Fugitive - Paul CLOUSTONWASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Marshals Service announced today that it has added convicted cop killer and child molester Paul Clouston, 70, to its list of 15 most wanted fugitives.

Clouston, a Pennsylvania native who was last seen in the Williamsburg, VA area, is wanted by the U.S. Marshals for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He also is wanted by the Virginia State Police for failing to register as a sex offender, and by the Virginia Division of Probation and Parole for alleged violations of his parole on a conviction for the armed sexual assault of a child.

The Marshals Service is now employing its comprehensive nationwide network of regional and district fugitive task forces, as well as its Technical Operations Group, to find Clouston. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to his capture.

“Paul Clouston is a dangerous felon and needs to be taken off the streets,” said United States Marshals Service Director John Clark. “By placing this predator on our 15 Most Wanted list, I have directed our investigators to utilize all our resources to catch him and bring him to justice. He has proven himself to be a danger to our children and he needs to be captured.”

In 1973, Clouston was convicted on second degree murder charges for murdering a police detective in Buena Park, CA a year earlier. He was released from prison in 1982. In 1991, Clouston was indicted on 17 counts of sexually abusing children in the Williamsburg, VA area. He later pled guilty to seven of the 17 charges he faced and was sent to prison again. He was released on parole in 2005. He was last seen living in a motel in the Williamsburg, VA area and has failed to register as a sex offender with the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Clouston, who is six feet tall and weighs 170 pounds, is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information as to his location is asked to contact their nearest United States Marshals Service office, or the Marshals Service Headquarters at (800) 336-0102.

Last year, marshals apprehended more than 35,500 federal fugitives, and cleared 38,500 federal felony warrants, more than all other federal law enforcement agencies combined. Working with authorities at federal, state and local levels, Marshals Service-led fugitive task forces arrested an additional 44,000 state and local fugitives, clearing 51,200 state and local felony warrants. ACCUSED MURDERER AND CHILD MOLESTER ADDED TO U.S. MARSHALS 15 MOST WANTED FUGITIVES LIST

Photo of Daniel Hiers

Washington, DC - Daniel William Hiers, Jr. seemed to be a good cop, a faithful public servant for the city of Charleston, South Carolina.  But, he betrayed his badge in the worst way, using it to gain the trust of a single mother with a young daughter, then allegedly molesting the 10-year-old child over a period of months.  On November 24, 2004, Hiers, 32, was arrested by the North Charleston Police Department for committing lewd acts on a child under the age of 16 and was released on bond.  He was promptly suspended from the police force.

The Dorchester County, SC Sheriff’s Department subsequently filed additional charges against Hiers for first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.  Hiers was scheduled to surrender on those charges on March 15, 2005, but failed to meet his lawyer at the sheriff’s department.  When Hiers’ mother looked for him at his house, he was nowhere to be found.  What was found in Hiers’ bedroom was the body of his 24-year-old wife, Ludimila, killed with a gunshot to the head.  Neighbors observed Hiers leaving the house several hours before the gruesome discovery was made.  On March 31, 2005, the Goose Creek, SC Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Hiers, alleging that he murdered his wife.

Despite an intensive manhunt, South Carolina authorities have been unable to locate Hiers, and requested the assistance of “Operation Intercept”, a U.S. Marshals-led fugitive task force.  The U.S. Marshals Service has obtained a federal warrant for Hiers for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.  Hiers is described as a white male, age 32, 6’03”, 210 pounds with blues eyes and blond hair.  He has eleven years of police experience, is trained in the martial arts, and maintains a high level of fitness.  He is believed to be armed with a .40 caliber Glock pistol and may possess a bullet-resistant vest.  The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a reward for information directly leading to Hiers’ arrest.

“It is especially abhorrent when individuals sworn to uphold the law commit such crimes. We will remain focused on seeing that this fugitive is brought to justice,” said Marshals Service Director Benigno Reyna.

U.S. Marshals are the nation’s primary fugitive hunting organization and capture more federal fugitives each year than all other national law enforcement agencies combined.  For more information about the United States Marshals Service, please visit the web site at www.usmarshals.gov/.

U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted Addition: Accused child molester Kenneth John Freeman, 44, has been added to the United States Marshals Service’s list of 15 Most Wanted Fugitives. Freeman is wanted on multiple counts of child rape in the first degree, as well as federal charges of manufacturing, possessing, and distributing child pornography. Freeman, a former reserve deputy sheriff with the Benton County, WA Sheriff’s Office, is accused of videotaping and photographing some of his sexual offenses for distribution.
