News Flash—Spain's Health Ministry

In order to promote healthy body images, "Spain's government has reached an agreement with major fashion designers...to standardize women's clothing sizes." to promote healthy body images. The designers who agreed to participate include:

Zara
Cortefiel
El Corte Ingles
Inditex

Retailers in Spain are required to feature clothes European size 38 or greater, with a five-year window to make the change. In addition, size 46 will no longer be labeled as a plus size.

"It is not reasonable for a modern and advanced society to establish stereotypes of beauty that are far removed from the social reality of a community. It is everyone's commitment that beauty and health go hand in hand," Health Minister Elena Salgado said at a signing ceremony Tuesday.

The ministry also has "plans to measure 8,500 Spanish girls and women between the ages of 12 and 70 to determine the true shapes of Spanish women's bodies."

Hooray for Spain!!! Let's hope the rest of the world follows suit.

st important fashion show, has banned all ultra-skinny models from participating in this year's show. All models must have a body mass index of at least 18, which means a 5' 9" model has to weigh a minimum of 123 pounds...13 pounds lighter than the average model weight for that height.

What a victory for not only the health of models in general, but for those who enjoy the idea of a fashion industry with an eye toward the lovelier of the fairer sex's body type -- the BBW.
