Where are Grovene & Helmsdale?
These were the names assigned to the today's Stops 17 & 18 in the early days of the line. The names were in use after tramway conversion and the introduction of the H-class cars in 1929.
In fact these two stops in the well-to-do eastern part of Glenelg have both had three names over the course of the years.
- Stop 17 was originally Grovene, then Miller St, now Glengowrie.
- Stop 18 was originally Helmsdale, then Fourth Avenue, now Glenelg East.
In the early 1930's the MTT operated the H-class cars as three-car sets at peak times on the Glenelg line. Triple-car operation was discontinued after a couple of years following a fatal accident which occurred at Grovene.
