3.  Goodwood and Forestville

Goodwood

Stop 7 is where the tramline crosses Goodwood Road - a busy north-south arterial route into Adelaide. The neighbourhood around the tram stop is also a busy local shopping & business area, which retains much of the character of the "high streets" of the past.

Around Goodwood Rd, especially to the west, there is a higher density of settlement than was the case at Wayville, with more compact dwellings including a number of old-style workers cottages and modern units.

The Wayville Showgrounds are also located just north of the line here, and can generate heavy traffic around the time of the Royal Show and during other large events which are staged there during the year.

Prior to tramway conversion, Goodwood Road was a station on the steam railway, and had a fairly substantial station building. The station building survived for some time after electrification (used for other purposes), and was eventually demolished in the late 1960's.

Goodwood Overpass

West of the Goodwood Road stop, the tram rises to cross the Adelaide to Melbourne railway by means of an overpass. The overpass is the only significant gradient on the Glenelg line.

The tram passes directly above the suburban station at Goodwood (which is served by local trains on the Belair and Noarlunga Centre lines), but no transfer facilities are available. A notice at Goodwood rail station advises transferring passengers to walk to Tram Stop 8 at Leah St, which is a significant walk across a park and along Norman Terrace.

Grade separation between trains and trams only occurred in 1929 when the Glenelg railway line was converted to tramway and when ownership & operation transferred from the South Australian Railways to the Municipal Tramways Trust. Prior to this the Glenelg railway had crossed the Main South line on the level - this was not an option with the frequent service implemented on the tramway.

The original overpass was constructed of timber. This was replaced by the current concrete and steel structure in 1978/79. The extra-high stobie poles which support the overhead power lines are separate from the bridge structure, and these are still 1929-vintage.

Forestville

After the Goodwood Overpass the tram enters the suburb of Forestville.

Like Goodwood, Forestville is an older suburb with its own character. There are a number of smaller workers cottages and some pockets of light industry.

Tram stop 8, Leah St./Forestville serves this neighbourhood.

There is a crossover just west of the Leah St level crossing, which allows trams to be turned back towards Glenelg in an emergency. This crossover has been used very infrequently.
