4.  Deepest Suburbia

Between Forestville and Morphettville the tram line follows a flat, straight, direct course across the Adelaide coastal plain towards Glenelg. Passengers waiting at intermediate stops in this section can see the headlights of their approaching tram literally miles away.

The line passes through suburbs such as Black Forest, Glandore and Plympton. This is an archetypal Australian landscape of suburban houses built between the 1930's and 1950's on quarter-acre blocks, bisected by four-lane arterial roads (South Rd, Marion Rd & Cross Rd).

Much of the development along this section can be attributed to the introduction of the electric trams in 1929. Before this date, settlement was sporadic and the Glenelg railway passed through areas of open paddocks and market gardens.

Racehorses stables were also located along the railway at that time, with the horses being transferred to Morphettville Racecourse by train. When the line was electrified, there was still a need for this facility, which resulted in operation of unique 'horse trams' for a time. These were trams which conveyed racehorses in horse boxes (rather than the usual connotation of horse-drawn trams!). The racehorse service operated in the 1930's; it was discontinued in 1936.
