Ulu Muda Forest & Nature Day Tour

General Information

The Ulu Muda area is located in the districts of Baling, Sik and Padang Terap in the north-east of Kedah State, bordering Thailand and about 2 hours’ drive from Penang. The Ulu Muda forests consist of the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve, Chebar Besar Forest Reserve, Padang Terap Forest Reserve, Pedu Forest Reserve, the proposed Bukit Saiong Forest Reserve and the proposed Bukit Keramat Forest Reserve.

The forests cover an area of about 120,000 hectares representing about 35% of the total forested land area of Kedah and accounting for most of the remaining virgin forests in the State. The Ulu Muda forests also form the water catchment area for the Muda, Pedu and Ahning dams that supply water for drinking and irrigation to Kedah, Penang and Perlis.

Scientific surveys conducted in Ulu Muda have revealed that there is an abundance of flora and fauna in the area. The forests of Ulu Muda are distinct from other tropical rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia such as Endau-Rompin and Taman Negara. Due to its location, the Ulu Muda area contains forests with Thai-Burmese characteristics. As such, some of the plant species there are found nowhere else in Malaysia.

The Ulu Muda forests harbour many large mammals including elephants, tigers, seladangs and tapirs. The presence of salt licks, such as Sira Air Hangat and Sira Kawi, provides visitors with good opportunities to catch a glimpse of wildlife. There are also six species of primates including two species of gibbons. The bird diversity is also rich - recent surveys have recorded over 201 species most of which are forest birds including hornbills.

A alternative to Taman Negara, The Ulu Muda Forest Reserve is mainly still unspoiled and untouch by Man. It remains one of the few places left where Tapirs are often sighted (in Taman Negara, these shy animals no longer regularly frequent the salt licks).
