Basic Strategy
- Whenever possible keep units on the red section dividing lines. This allows for more options when playing your command cards.
- Very rarely should you leave your units unsupported. Make sure a unit is supported by two friendly units in adjacent hexes, this will make the unit bold allowing the unit to ignore the first retreat flag rolled against it. Also being bold allows a unit to Battleback.. Most of the time when your opponent attacks one of your units he's doing so because the unit he is attacking with is more powerful than the one your defending with, i.e. red banner against blue banner, battleback is a way for you to take a free attack against your opponent . This brings me to my next point.
- Make sure your attacking unit is supported because invariably once battle is joined strategy fails. Those units you thought were dead money always seem to survive your attack, being supported allows your unit to better survive the enemy's counter attack.
- Terrain and Landmarks are your friends, use them appropriately. In forests and on ramparts archers battle with max dice, whereas a unit attacking them such as Red cavalry can only battle with a max of 2d. Blue units on hills can battle with max dice, while red units on a hill battles with one less dice. Red units on a bridge battle with max dice and are bold because of the bridge.
- Calvary make excellent support units. They can move long distances and are great for quickly supporting your units. Be careful with your cavalry, while they can be very powerful remember that they have one less figure than the other units and can be more easily destroyed.
- Be weary of playing too aggressively, over extending your lines is a sure way to defeat.
- Just because your draw a powerful card doesn't mean you have to play it right away, wait for the most opportune moment. Sometimes playing the scout card is the right move.
- Be sure to use the scout card when it is strategically viable to do so, sometimes the scout card is your best option.
