DECEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

AGM
The BCC AGM was held on Monday 7th December. The following club members were elected unopposed as office bearers for 2010:
President: Mark Windsor
Vice President: Rosemary Hastings
Secretary: Elaine Ryan
Assistant Secretary: Toireasa Gallagher
Treasurer: Tony Hogan
Assistant Treasurer: David Lowe
Committee Members: Toireasa Gallagher, Steve Brilley, Phil Cole, Michael Marshall,
                                  Leonie Summersby, Marian Renshaw
Handicapper: Ryan O’Donnell
Assistant Handicapper: Rod Esdaile
NSW Delegate: Tim Woolford-Smith
Publicity Officers: Mark Windsor, Toireasa Gallagher, Phil Cole, Rod Esdaile

Thank you to the members that have come forward to run theBCC.  It is great to see some new faces on board.

SIGN DUTY         VERY IMPORTANT IMFORMATION!!!!
Another reminder about the role of being the sign duty officer for the day:
Rosemary Hastings is responsible for making up the sign duty roster. She will place you on a race day 1 to 2 times a year with at least one other person. If the day you are placed on is not suitable then it is your responsibility to find a replacement and then notify Rosemary on 6334 4053.
On race day you are to go over the course before the race and at every 5km either turn down the permanent signs or place out portable signs (which are located in the Ryan’s carport at 22 Church St Perthville). If you are unaware where the signs are then ask a committee member for help and then try to take note of where they are on race day.
To help take the load off Ryan the BCC will now definitely enforce the rule that is already in place that gets looked over: if you are on sign duty then it is your job to look after the sign on sheet and run the race. This will mean printing out the sign on sheet that Ryan will email to you, placing it on the sign on bench, collecting the race entry money, closing sign on 15 minutes prior to the race start, using the handicaps on the sign on sheet write down the bunches, announce them at the race start, start the race (with the BCC stopwatch that Elaine Ryan has or you can use your own) and judge the finish.
This is not a hard job and if you need help there are always committee members around to give you assistance. Giving up 1 or 2 race days a year is a small price to pay for a club that runs on volunteers and if we don’t share the load then we will burn them out.

2010 LICENCE RENEWALS ARE DUE
All 2009 Cycling Australia licences will expire at midnight on 31st December 2009. You MUST renew your licence before your first race in 2010. The best way to do this is online through either the websites www.cycling.org.au or www.nsw.cycling.org.au . Go to the “members” section and select “online membership renewal”. A confirmation email will be sent to Elaine Ryan so she knows you have paid your membership. The amount due covers the BCC fee too. You can pay in person to Elaine but you must print out 3 copies of the membership form and fill in all 3 copies.
A tick will be placed next to your name on the sign on sheet when you have renewed your membership. If you try to sneak in a race or two before you pay and are involved in an accident you will wipe out anyone from being covered by insurance
If there is a reason that you cannot afford to pay the full amount up front then there are options available to you. Please speak to Elaine about this.

DRINKS FOR SALE
There are still a number of cartons of drinks left from the BCC canteen at Mount Panorama for sale at wholesale prices. Coke and Sprite $35 carton of 24. Powerade $29 carton of 12. Orange or Tropical Juice $40 carton of 24. Water $18 carton of 24. See Tony Hogan to purchase the drinks.

CHRISTMAS HAMPER AND BBQ
The annual Christmas Hamper race will be held at Perthville on the 20th December. There will be 2 separate handicap races (A/B Quarry 2 Roads, C/D Ryan’s 2 Roads) both vying for the coveted hampers. The usual 9.30am race start time will apply. Following the race will be a BBQ at the Perthville Hall. Bring your families out for a fun day where the kids can play on the playground equipment and you can recap all the races of the year!

RACE START TIME CHANGE IN 2010
A trial to the starting time of the Sunday morning races will take place during the month of January 2010.

The new time will be 8.15am sign on close, 8.30am race start.

Please let the BCC Committee know if you are in favour or not of this change at the end of January 2010.

JUNIOR SKILLS SESSIONS
Last Friday (4th December) was the final Junior Skills Session in the 6 week program. The sessions were run by Michael Marshall and Toireasa Gallagher. On average 15 kids turned up and learnt cycling skills on the grass in the middle of the track before they got a chance at having a couple of races at the end of the session. The next 6 week program is scheduled to be run at the beginning of the first term of school in 2010.

It has been decided that because the BCC was unable to obtain any small track bikes for the Skills Kids to progress on to riding, then the Skills kids will continue to have their own racing/skills sessions from 6pm-6.40pm on Friday nights.

If you are aware of anyone that could be a potential sponsor of the club to assist in purchasing some bikes then please contact a committee member and pass on their details. It would be excellent to continue the growth of the club with these kids that have been so energetic and enthusiastic about racing their bikes!

Thank you to Belly's Bikes for supplying samlpe bags full of goodies to the kids on completion of their skills course. And a thank you to Mark Renshaw, Bathurst's own cycling superstar, who came down to the track and gave away signed postcards and had a chat to the kids.

OCTOBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

URGENT: MT PANORAMA V8 RACE WEEK CANTEEN WORKERS NEEDED

The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is on this week (8th to 11th October) and the BCC needs

workers for the Canteen at Mt Panorama. The canteen is located at Harris Park (the top end of Pit Straight at Hell Corner on the outside of the circuit).

Selling food and drinks at the Bathurst 1000 is the major fundraiser for the BCC and all we ask of members is to give up about 4 hours of their time to do a shift some time over the 4 days the cars are at Mount Panorama. Toireasa Gallagher will be organising the roster so please tell her of the time(s) you are available to help. The shifts will be at the following times: Thursday and Friday 10am - 2pm. Saturday 8am -12pm, 12pm - 4pm. Sunday 7am -11am, 11am - 4pm. A few workers will need to start 1 hour earlier than the open time to get things set up ready for opening. Please contact Toireasa by replying to this email or by phone on 0409 215 886.

Numbers are needed by Wednesday 7th October, however if after Wednesday you find you become

able to help please still feel free to ring up and offer your assistance.

The following is the roster duty so far:

THURSDAY: (5-7 workers needed) Kym Baker, Gary Baker, Kerryn Windsor, Mark Windsor, Elaine Ryan, Tony Hogan.

FRIDAY: (5-7 workers needed) Kym Baker, Gary Baker, Kerryn Windsor, Tony Hogan.

SATURDAY: (8-10 workers needed for each shift) 8am-12pm: Ryan O’Donnell, Toireasa Gallagher, Tony Hogan. 12pm-4pm: Graham Wheeler, Jill Harris, Geoffrey Hawkins, Elaine Ryan, Geoff Ryan.

SUNDAY: (8-10 workers needed for each shift) 7am-11am: Steve Brilley, Ryan O’Donnell, Toireasa Gallagher, Elaine Ryan, Geoff Ryan, Tony Hogan, Leonie Summersby, Michael Summersby, Michael Marshall. 11am-4pm: No one……….

The BCC is allocated catering tickets to get our members in to work at the canteen. There are a limited number of tickets but as they are catering tickets it is possible to get people in to do their shift and then they can stay to watch the cars without having to leave to pass on their ticket to someone else. Therefore the process to get workers in is to meet 10mins before your allocated roster start time at the main entrance gate to Harris Park from the main car park at the bottom of the Mount. Someone from the previous shift will meet you there with the tickets to get you in. What an easy (and cheap!) way of getting in to watch V8s racing at Mt Panorama!

BUY, SWAP OR SELL NIGHT

On Friday 6th November 2009 there will be a Buy, Swap or Sell night at the track starting from 6pm. If

you have any cycling related items sitting around at home not being used then bring them down, set up a table and see what you can get for them. It is hoping that there will be a number of new kids participating in the Junior Skills session that could quite possibly be interested in getting their hands on some cheap gear so you could make a few dollars!

TRIALLING OF A NEW COURSE FOR RACING

To reduce the number of riders on the Rockley Rd the following new course has been added to the race program; “The Quarry 2 Roads”. This course will be: start at Perthville, go straight out to Georges Plains and up to the Quarry on Cow Flat Rd, turn around and go out to the Newbridge turn, then come back to Georges Plains to finish up St John’s Rd.

The old “Two Roads” course will be re-named to “Ryan’s 2 Roads”.

JUNIOR SKILLS
A new format for the Junior Skills sessions will run this track season. There will be two 6 week courses. New junior cyclists who wish to develop their riding skills before potentially starting up racing will be able to participate in a 6 week course run by Michael Marshall and Toireasa Gallagher. The course will run from 5.45pm - 6.45pm. During this time there is to be no one else on the inside of the track. Warm up time will run from 6.45pm to 7.15pm. Under 9 -13 will have the time from 6.45pm - 7pm. Senior riders will have the track for warm up from 7 - 7.15pm. A formal letter with more details will be sent out soon.

SEPTEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

BCC INTERCLUB/ CALL TO ARMS

Congratulations to all the BCC members who competed in the BCC Interclub. The day also acted as the BCC’s fundraiser for Call To Arms; raising awareness on men’s cancer. The BCC donated half of the entry money to Call to Arms. $600 was taken in entry fees therefore a $300 donation was made. Thank you for participating and wearing a yellow arm band to show your support.

CHANGE OF DATE: DUNC GRAY VELODROME VISIT 26th SEPTEMBER

The DGV track day has now been changed to the 26th September. Dubbo CC has booked DGV and

the BCC are joining in with them for the day. Dubbo has come up with the following program for the day:

1.00pm Half hour for new junior riders

1.30pm Open for all riders warm up

2.00pm Track used for specific training

3.00pm Half hour for new junior riders

3.30pm Open for all riders warm up

4.00pm Open carnival for all riders

Cost for the DGV use and dinner at the Handlebar Tavern is $30. Dinner only is $15.

Please contact Elaine Ryan or Glen Carter to show your and any family member’s intention of attending the DGV visit as numbers are needed for catering purposes.

ROCKLEY ROAD

Over the past couple of months there has been some concern raised over the BCC racing on the Rockley Rd. The BCC wants to remind riders that they are to ride towards the left hand side of the road and NOT to cross the centre line. Riding on the centre line is also being considered dangerous as passing cars will be going very close to the rider when passing.

Please remember that only riders in the race are to be on Rockley Rd during race times and minimal vehicles to go up and down the Rockley Rd to help keep congestion to a minimum.

Gary Baker will be keeping a watch on the racing on the Rockley Rd and will be incredibly hard on riders doing the wrong thing.

HARRISON CARTER AND HARRISON JONES RACE ROAD NATIONALS

The Junior National Road Championships were held from 11th-13th September. Harrison Carter was

selected into the NSW Junior Team to race the time trial, road race and criterium while Harrison Jones was selected to race as an individual rider representing Bathurst in the criterium. Harrison Carter posted a p.b. in the time trial and placed 34th, and in the road race made the break with the winning group and came 13th. Both boys were unfortunately caught up in a crash in the criterium.

PUBLICITY OFFICERS

A reminder that the BCC publicity officers are Rod Esdaile for senior racing and Michelle Buckley for junior racing. If you are going away to a major race or have some results you’d like published in the Western Advocate then please contact these people. Alternatively Mark Windsor and Toireasa Gallagher can pass on your information. The BCC would prefer that you didn’t directly contact the Western Advocate.

TRACK SEASON

With the start of track racing approaching at the end of September the BCC is calling on members to become involved in organising the track season. Marian Renshaw and Rosemary Hastings have put their hand up but would like other members to help with the running of Friday night track racing. There may be an incentive for someone to take on the position of race promoter. Please come forward asap if you are interested or know of someone that used to race that would like to help out for a few hours on a Friday night.

CLUB CLOTHING

The club clothing orders has arrived and riders who ordered clothing can pick it up from Elaine Ryan. There is now also a range of club clothing in stock. Remember that you must wear club clothing any time you race at a NSW or Australian Open event.

MT PANORAMA V8 RACE WEEK CANTEEN WORKERS NEEDED

It’s coming up to that time of the year where the BCC members don an apron and cook up egg and bacon rolls and steak sandwiches for the race fans attending the Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercar Race. This is the major fundraiser for the BCC and all we ask of members is to give up to 4 hours of their time to do a shift some time over the 4 days the cars are at Mount Panorama. Toireasa Gallagher will be organising the roster so please tell her of the time(s) you are available to help. Generally the open times of the canteen are Thursday/Friday 10am-3pm. Special orders can be made but may be at a higher cost. Orders are usually only placed twice a year so get in now to guarantee your purchase of club clothing.

A reminder that it is compulsory to wear your club clothing when you compete in a NSW or Australian cycling event. The commissaire of the race has the right to fine a rider on race day if they are not wearing their correct race clothes.

FINISH LINE

Please remember to keep the area around the finish line clear at the end of the race. This includes spectator cars and the riders. If you have turned short and are waiting for the race to finish please stand on the side of the road on the dirt to watch the finish. Cars are to be parked on the far side of the finish line up near where the road widens at the end of St John‘s Rd.. Racing riders are to cross the line and make their way up into the widened area and stay up there until all the riders have finished. Coming back down to the finish line there is a red and white line painted on the left hand side of the road that riders are not to cross until a race official has given the all clear to head back to Perthville.

FOLLOW CARS DURING RACING

A reminder to family and friends of cyclists racing that they are not to follow a lone rider during a race. They are permitted to follow a bunch and observe that the riders are following the road/race rules. If a spectator wants to watch a lone rider’s progress then they are to drive to safe areas along the course and park and wait for the rider to reach them. Also, there are not to be 2 or more cars following the one bunch. As part of our road permissions, the BCC has agreed that the riders and/or follow cars will not interfere with local traffic. We do ask as a courtesy that follow cars pull to the left to allow vehicles a more clear view to be able to overtake and so that the vehicle doesn’t have to overtake a car AND a bunch.

 CNSW CYCLISTS OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Zachary Marshall, Marian Renshaw, Rosemary Hastings for being named the 2008 CNSW Cyclist of the Year for their relative age categories and to Toireasa Gallagher and Lindy Hou for being named CNSW Tandem Cyclists of the Year.

MAP OF ROAD COURSE FOR SIGN DUTY

A laminated copy of the race courses for the BCC is now situated in the Ryan’s carport (22 Church St, Perthville, 1 block up from the Perthville Hall on the corner) along with the portable signs. There are mostly permanent signs along the race course that simply need turned down. A few portable signs will need to be taken and placed over a guidepost. If it is your turn to do sign duty and you are not sure about anything please ask a committee member for instructions.

A reminder too that if you are on sign duty then it is also your responsibility to run the race that day if there are no officials present.

MAY 2009 NEWSLETTER

ROCKLEY CUP

The Rockley Cup will be held on Saturday 23rd May, 2009. The distance this year is 62km. The course

 is: Perthville-Rockley-Perthville-Newbridge turn-St John’s Rd

Entry fee: $5 per person, $10 per family living in the same household.

Due to the Rockley Cup attracting a large number of riders the sign on will close at 1pm. If you are late then you will incur a move back on your handicap by one bunch. Toireasa will be handling the entries on the day and will not be bending the rules for anyone. The reason behind this is so Ryan can have plenty of time to do the handicapping so the race can start on time at 1.30pm.

BE SAFE, BE SEEN

It has been a bit foggy lately and it has been noted that some riders are venturing out for early morning training rides without lights. This is a reminder to all riders that the RTA Road Rules state that you must have a white front light (flashing or still) and a rear red tail light (flashing or still) when visibility is low and the sun is not shining (which it doesn’t on these lovely foggy mornings!). This is for your own safety. The local bike shops sell lights at very reasonable prices so there should be no excuse to not have lights.

RIDING ON ROADS DURING RACE TIMES

The Rockley Rd is becoming increasingly busy and lately during races there has been a couple of close calls with bunches and cars. It is a club rule that members are not allowed to train on the race route during race times and the BCC would like to extend the rule to parents/partners/children of members racing that they stay off the Rockley Rd too. This is to try and minimise the number of bunches that can pass one another going up and down Rockley Rd and the possibility of cars trying to overtake bunches and squeezing between the bunches as they pass.

RACE ENTRY FEES

Race entry fees were decided on at the beginning of the year.

Individual Entry: $5.00

Family Entry: $10.00

A family is considered to be the people living in the one household. For example: Grandad, Dad and Mum and Son all enter the same race. Grandad lives in his own place at Kelso. Dad, Mum and Son all live in the same house in Eglinton. Grandad will pay $5. Dad, Mum and Son will collectively pay $10.

RACE MARSHALS

The Senior rider of the bunch will be considered the Race Marshal of the bunch. They are given the permission to direct riders at turns or to advise riders in their bunch if they have done the wrong thing (ie, cutting corners, crossing centre lines). Please respect these marshals as they are there to help keep the racing safe and to help offending riders from being fined. If however a rider is considered to have broken the race rules deliberately and in a severe manner the marshal will report the offence to the Committee and the rider will be fined.

COMMISSAIRE

Most riders will be aware that Gary Baker has become a NSW Commissaire and has been attending some of the local club races and been the official commissaire of the race. Gary has not specified which races he will attend and as such the BCC is making riders be aware that Gary could turn up whenever and wherever without notice and be commissaire of the club race. It is kind of like a policeman setting up a radar on the side of the road. You never know where they are going to be. So with Gary turning up when he wants this is to make sure all riders obey the race rules as you never know when Gary is looking!

RACE RULE REMINDERS

Be mindful at the turns to look for cars coming from all directions. Remember to give adequate notice to cars of your intention to turn.

Remember that all turns are neutral. It is up to the front of the bunch to see if all riders are together before the pace can be put on again. It is also up to the last rider to yell out when they are all through the neutral and are back together. There are markers on the road to identify when you have entered a neutral zone. If you do not know where the neutral zones are then ask. If you do not comply with the rules of the neutral zone then you may be fined.

The whole length of St John’s Rd is not open fully for the race to finish. Riders are to stay on the left hand side of the road, especially up the sharp hill at the beginning of the road.

When racing on Cow Flat Rd the riders going out must obey the “Give Way” sign and give way to any riders or vehicles that are approaching or are on the one lane bridge coming back towards Georges Plains.

I love to go a cycling,

Along the Perthville track.

And as I go I love to sing,

With a spare tyre on my back.

The miles flash past, I'm almost late,

Alas,alas and woe.

I've pedalled hard, I've pedalled fast,

My legs they will not go!

2nd $15

3rd $10

Fastest time in handicap $10

All in handicap

2nd $20

Fastest time $15

It is also requested that the exact money to be used for race entries. If you bring out a note bigger than $10 then it's suggested that you stop in at the Perthville shop and buy a bag of lollies before the race to have smaller change!

ROAD RACING RULE REMINDERS

Riders are reminded of a few important things to remember during the road races:

Do not cross the centre line of the road. This applies to the whole length of the race route, especially up the St John's Rd hill. The BCC does not have permission to use the whole width of the road on St John's Rd therefore you need to keep to the left hand side of the road. A few weeks ago in a scratch race there was a big bunch and as the pace went up and down the riders were spreading themselves out over the centre line. This was becoming dangerous especially as there were cars wanting to overtake from behind. Riders can and will be fined if they are caught crossing the centre line or breaking any road rules. The fine is $5 or if you win prizemoney on the day you forfit your winnings. These fines must be paid before your next race.

In general, riders are to obey all RTA Road Rules. This includes giving way to traffic when turning and stopping at the rail crossing if the lights are flashing and bells ringing.

Family members are encouraged to come out to the races to spectate but they must not interfere with a race in progress. There were cars parking at the finish line of the time trial that caused confusion to riders finishing. Spectator vehicles are to be parked at least 150m after the finish line. The spectators are to then walk to the finish line. Do not park before the finish line. It is also in our road permissions that we do not have official follow cars. Therefore it is asked that spectators are to drive to safe spots along the race course and watch the race pass by.

SIGN DUTY ROSTER

Riders new to the BCC might not be aware of the Sign Duty Roster that is in place for putting out or turning down the signs along the road race route and doing the reverse after the race. They also are responsible for running the race that day as well. The purpose of this is so the same people are not driving about the country side every week clocking km's up on their car and using their own petrol doing the signs. It is expected that you are willing to give up your ability to race on the day as well if there isn't a non-competitor there to run the race (like Elaine). You are to take note of any hazzards along the race route when you're placing the signs out so that it can be announced before the start of the race.

Each BCC rider is assigned 2 races a year to do the sign duty. It is expected that everybody that races on the road to do their turn. This includes the juniors. They will have to get the help from their parents or guardians for this.

Rosemary Hastings is in charge of making up the roster. Rosemary posts the roster on the club website www.bathurstcyclingclub.com and there is one included below. If you cannot do the weekend you are assigned to it is your responsibility to organise a swap with someone else. Please do not leave it to the Friday before you are rostered on and expect Rosemary to chase up someone for you. If you fail to do your assigned day on the roster you must make up for it before you can race again.

The portable yellow signs are kept in the Ryan's carport (22 Church St Perthville, 1 block from the start line) and the permanent signs on the road are not locked and simply need turning down. There is to be a sign every 5km along the race route. If you are unsure about where to put the signs or where the permanent signs are located please ask Elaine, Toireasa, or Rosemary or any member of the committee.

This is the roster for the rest of 2009. If you have already spoken to Rosemary about changing your date but it does not appear on this roster just go with the date you have agreed to do. The changes weren't available at the time of writing this newsletter.

GEOFFREY HAWKINS TO TOUR AUSTRALIA

On the 21st March, Geoffrey Hawkins is departing on a 6 month ride around Australia, taking in the sights, wearing out a few bike tyres and raising money for Rotary Health as part of the Great Australian Bike Ride . It is an oganinsed ride with the Rotary Clubs of Australia. Geoffrey at 80 years of age will become the oldest man to officially ride around Australia. After the passing of his wife last year Geoffrey has decided to raise his money for Parkison's Disease.

To support Geoffrey the BCC Committee has decided that all entry fees and prizemoney from the race on Sunday March 1st, the John Buttler Memorial, will be donated to Geoffrey. The Committee is encouraging riders to kick in a couple of extra dollars as well. The BCC will make a donation to Geoffrey on the day too. There is also hopefully going to be media present from Prime and Win TV and the Western Advocate.

The BCC wishes Geoffrey all the best with his adventure and hopes he has a safe and enjoyable ride.
