If you see no hounds on this page it doesn't necessarily mean there are no bassets looking for Forever Homes - hounds will not always appear here straight away if they need any vet care (such as spaying or neutering), or if we are assessing them for temprement.
E-mail Helen mailto:helen@bassetrescuecalgary for further information, or fill in an adoption application. As soon as we have a hound that may fit into your family we will be in touch. We ask for a donation of $100-$250 (depending on the age and health of the dog) to be given when adopting a hound to help us to cover the cost of vetting our charges.
If there is a strong applicant for a hound they will be listed as 'adoption pending'. This doesn't necessarily mean they have a forever home, just that they are meeting with a prospective adopter soon and may not be available for long. Feel free to stil enquire about these hounds and we'll update you on where they are in the adoption process!

Stitch is a sweet boy - we think around 2 or so who's in need of a loving forever home. He was found by someone up in Edmonton in a garbage can, but since then his luck hasn't changed much as he's been chained outside by his finder. He's an affectionate boy who likes to be in the house, so it would seem that he was a house pet at some point prior to this. He's great with other dogs and older children (we've never had him around younger kids yet so we can't say one way or another, though I would suspect he'll be fine with them). We're also not sure how he is with cats as we've not been able to observe him with them yet.
He has some training and we believe he was housebroken in the past, though his recent time outside will mean his new family may have to give him a bit of a refresher course. We suspect he won't take long to pick up on it again, though. If you think you can give this boy the home and love he deserves, drop us a line!

Theo is a handsome boy who is due to turn 3 on boxing day this year. His current mum is having to give him up after a relationship breakdown. He is a friendly, good natured hound that loves walks, snuggling, and getting to be with his people. He does have a tendancy to bark when left alone and will need some training to help with that (although, having a fur sibling to keep him company may well negate that... he's currently an only hound but would love to have a canine brother or sister), and definitely needs work on his housetraining. He's generally very good with not soiling in the house when someone is home with him, but has a habit of going inside when left alone. We believe this is mostly due to mild seperation anxiety and with some training and patience will be easy to fix. Other than that, he's a typical basset and will counter-cruise if he gets the chance (particular favourite items to steal are bread and, oddly enough, toothbrushes! He's the first hound I've heard of that willingly brushes his teeth!!!).
If you're looking for a new family member and think that Theo may be the perfect fit, get in touch!

Sammers was originally supposed to arrive in Calgary on Nov 7th with 4 other hounds (Henry, Lucy, Goldie, & Molly) but managed to escape mid-transport and went on the run in Helena, Montana. This was his first taste of freedom having been kept in a cage in a puppy mill for 5 years before being handed over to a shelter after he was no longer useful to them, but it didn't go too well. Sammers was on the run for 9 days in Helena before being caught by a group of wonderful volunteers who'd been tracking him tirelessly who found that he'd been hit by a train. Sammers is currently with a team of vets in Helena undergoing the amputation of his tail and part of his front left paw. He was fostered in Montana before finally arriving in Calgary on December 19th - 5 weeks later than originally planned. He's a very sweet boy, though he needs a lot of TLC after his recent ordeal; he's been left very timid and needs some time to warm up to people. In the shelter in Iowa prior to his escape he was known as the 'nursemaid' because he was so concerned about the well being of the other dogs and people around him. He was working on his housebreaking prior to his accident, which will continue through his recovery and is great with people of all ages and other animals. As Sammers will be considered special needs due to his amputations he will need a home that will take his disabilities into account. He'll also need to go somewhere incredibly secure so that he can't have any more hair-raising adventures - bassets are not well known for learning from their past mistakes, and while I'd love to say that Sammers has learned his lesson, if I know basset hounds there's a very slim chance of it!

This handsome boy is Billy - he's an owner relinquish from Medicine Hat, very sweet, laid back, and healthy and will be ready for his forever home as soon as he's healed from his neuter surgery. He's 5 years old, loves other dogs, kids, and adults and really just wants to be everyone's friend. His previous owner reports that he loves doggy daycare, so he'd do very well with a fur-sibling or two. For a 5 year old he's pretty high-energy... if we didn't have his previous info we'd have guessed he was closer to 2! If you think this boy would make the perfect addition to your family, drop us a line!

Sweet girl Ginger is a 9 year old owner relinquish from Calgary, her family are heartbroken to give her up but are experiencing financial difficulty that is making it impossible to give Ginger the care she needs. She is considered a special needs hound because she has Addisons Disease - but it is fully under control and she is a very happy and otherwise healthy pooch. She needs to recieve monthly shots to control her cortisol levels and will need to go to a family willing to commit to keeping her health issues under control. If you can give this beautiful senior girl all the love and care she needs, get in touch with us!!!

Poor Bobby has not had an easy few months. We were originally supposed to get him as an owner relinquish a few weeks ago, but his owner rehomed him herself before handing him over. Thanks to a tumultuous few months, this sweet boy is suffering from seperation anxiety and tends to panic when left alone. He really needs a family who is willing to work on his fears to show him that they're always going to return and not dump him like his previous owners.
Originally picked up by Animal Control, and never claimed by his family, Bobby was adopted by a family who had to give him up because of noise complaints from neighbours. His next family have also decided to give him up because they too don't have the time or patience to work through Bobby's fears. This boy has been through at least 3 families, plus Animal Control in under 6 weeks, and he's very confused and looking for some stability. He's currently with one of our wonderful foster homes and enjoying being with his foster dad who works from home and is able to give Bobby the kind of love and reassurance he needs right now.
Bobby is reportedly a very good natured, playful, curious boy that gets on well with people and other dogs. He loves to snuggle and really is at his happiest when he's with his family. He'd do very well with a canine companion or as a single hound with people that are home-based, and once his abandonment issues have been worked on he's going to be a very easy boy to have around. Are you the right family to show Bobby that he's finally got his forever home?

Snoopy is currently in Iowa with one of our affiliate basset rescues; they are still overrun with homeless hounds, and after the success of our other transports this year we've decided to do it again before the weather makes the roads impossible to rely on over winter.
This lovely boy has recently lost a whopping 55lb's, shrinking down to an 80lb hunk of love from the 125lb pooch he was. Snoopy has been in foster care for a while whilst he was cared for and brought down to a healthy weight but he's finally ready for his very own forever home! Previously owned by a truck driver that indulged both his and Snoopy's on-the-road hamburger cravings a little too often, his weight will have to be watched carefully.. old habits die hard for both humans and hounds, and a burger and fries are a tempting combination! He's about 6 years old, loves to play with his stuffed toys and loves kids. Drop us a line if you're interested in this hound.

Sissy is currently in Iowa with one of our affiliate basset rescues; they are still overrun with homeless hounds, and after the success of our other transports this year we've decided to do it again before the weather makes the roads impossible to rely on over winter.
This sweet 7 year old (not that you'd know it!) girl is very laid back, loves other dogs and people and is all-around a joy to have about. She's working hard on her housetraining in her foster home and is doing very well - her foster parents think she'll have it down in no time. She was an owner relinquish with Wheels (see below) and ended up in rescue after her previous family fell into financial hardship, but has been taken good care of in the past and is a healthy girl.
If you're looking for an easy to please family member who just wants a lap to snuggle in, drop us a line and we'll get you some more info on this little lady.

Wheels is currently in Iowa with one of our affiliate basset rescues; they are still overrun with homeless hounds, and after the success of our other transports this year we've decided to do it again before the weather makes the roads impossible to rely on over winter.
Wheels is 9 years old, but you'd never know it to look at him! He was surrendered to rescue with Sissy (see above) by his previous family due to financial hardship. He's also working hard on his housetraining and picking up on it really quickly; he's a healthy, polite, affectionate, friendly boy who walks well on a leash and loves car rides.
If youu'd like some more info on this lovely guy let us know!

Molly will be arriving in Calgary from Iowa on Nov 15th; they are still overrun with homeless hounds, and after the success of bringing up the 4 in September we've decided to do it again before the weather makes the roads impossible to rely on over winter.
This sweetheart is Molly. She is a recent addition to rescue and had to be released by her owner. He loved her very much and all though giving Molly up was hard he did the right thing in wanting to find Molly a new forever home. Molly is the most unique Basset girl we have ever seen in that her coloring is just stunning. Her brown is the deepest chocolate brown we have ever seen and she is just as sweet as chocolate. Molly is still a young pup around 2 years old and will benefit from a regular routine schedule in her new home. We highly recommend also sticking with her crate training...she is currently being crate trained in and is doing wonderfully with it...she does cry for a short time but after a few minutes settles nicely. Providing her with stimulating activities, such as Kong toys, toys, play time in the back yard will help her immensely. We have also learned Molly is an escape artist...she will dig to get out, climb chain link fences, you name she does it. So we are kindly requesting for Molly's safety that you have a wooden/plastic 6 ft privacy fence that connects firmly with the ground or allow Molly to be on a tie out to go outside unsupervised. She is doing incredibly well on her house training and will just again need a regular routine to follow and help learning the cue words for "potty" in her new home. She is UTD on all vaccinations, HW tested negative and on preventative and altered.
Molly's adoption fee is $200
