Things You'll Need:

Make sure you save EasyBCD onto a Pen Drive.

Atleast 60GB Hard Drive

Creating a partition to install Windows XP onto:

Step 1)
Go to start and go to run. Then type in 'compmgmt.msc', and click enter.

Step 2)
Click on disk management, on the left side.

Step 3)
Right click on your desired partition to shrink, and click 'shrink volume'. It should atleast show half of your hard drive space, depending on how much space you have got.

Step 4)
Make sure you can shrink it by atleast 15Gb (15000Mb)

if you cant folow these steps:

  • Go to Control Panel --> System and Maintenance
  • Click on 'Defragment your hard drive', under 'Administrative tools'
  • Click on 'Defragment now'.

Be patient, this may take up to 3 hours, depending on how much disk space you have used. After it has finished, reboot your computer, then try again.

If the problem still persists, delete some unnecessary filesthat you dont really need, then defragment your hard drive again, reboot the computer. If you still cannot shrink it by 15GB, Email me on bass-2k8@hotmail.co.uk and explain your problem.

Step 5)
You now have an unnalocated space/partition. Now we need to format it so...

  • Right click on the unnalocated space/partition
  • Click on 'New simple volume'
  • Click on 'Next'
  • Click on 'Next'
  • Click on 'Next'
  • Now choose a name for the volume label, E.g 'Windows XP'
  • Tick 'Perform a qucik format'
  • Click 'Next'

Installing Windows XP onto partition:

Step 1)
Insert your Windows XP Installation Disc, and boot from it.

Step 2)

  • After it has finished copying files

it will ask you to prepare Windows XP to run on your computer.

So just press enter.

  • Then it show you the END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT.

So just press F8, to accept it.

  • It will now show you the partitions on your computer.

So highlight the partition you want to install it on, and press enter.

  • It will ask whether you would like to format the partition.

So highlight 'Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick)', and press enter.

Step 3)
After it formats the partition

it will copy the setup files, and then reboot.

Step 4)
Now Windows XP will start to install the Operating System, using a Graphics User Interface (GUI).

Note: Menu's will pop up asking you to...

  • Change Regional and Language settings
  • Enter your name and organization
  • Enter your product key

  • Enter a Computer Name & Create a password for the System Administrator
  • Edit the date, time, and time zone settings

  • Edit Networking Settings

So just follow the on-screen instructions, and you should have a succesful install.

Step 5)
It will now restart, and start to boot into XP.

You can now take out your disc.

Step 6)
It will pop up saying 'To improve the appearence of visual elements, Windows will automatically adjust your screen resolution'.

So just click ok.

Step 7)
The Welcome screen will load up first

which will spend a few minutes setting up your computer.
It will do the following:

  • Checks your Internet connectivity
  • Ask you to register with Microsoft
  • Create your user account

And thats it!, you have Windows XP on your computer along with vista.
BUT.. were are going to have to configure it to dual boot Windows XP & Windows Vista.

IMPORTANT: Install Easy BCD onto XP, as soon as you log in.

Configuring Windows to Dual Boot:

Step 1)
Boot from your Windows Vista Installation Disc

Step 2)

  • Once loaded up, choose your language settings, and click 'Next'.

  • Click on 'Repair your computer', at the bottom left.

  • You will see a Windows Vista Installation there, So highlight it, and click 'Next'.

  • Now click on 'Startup Repair', at the top. This looks for problems which would stop Windows Vista from booting, and fixes them.

  • Once it's done, click Finish. It will now reboot into Windows Vista.

Step 3)

  • Install Easy BCD as soon as you log in.
  • Open Easy BCD, and go to 'Add/Remove Entries'.
  • In the 'Add an entry' section, make sure your on the Windows tab.
  • Go to the 'Type' drop-down menu, and select 'Windows NT/2K/XP/2K3'.
  • Now select a name for it, i chose Windows XP.
  • Select the Drive that XP is installed on. This is weird, but it says in 'My Computer' that Windows XP is installed on a partition (e.g e:/). But instead you have to choose C:/ instead of E:/.
  • Now click on 'Add Entry', and click on 'Save' at the top.
  • Now to check that it has worked, reboot your computer and you should a choice to boot into either Windows XP, or Windows Vista. Highlight each of them, and click enter, to test if they can boot properly.
