Also once you have chosen a game to make think about the time it will take to make your game. Some times you will realise it's just not possible. Also, decide now how advanced this game will. Don't start on a very advanced game and get stuck. It would have been better to do the simpler version if that's all you could handle. You learn as you go along, you can't jump ahead and expect to learn all you've jumped ahead of faster just because you seem to be further ahead.

Role Playing Games are games in which you play the role of a main character in a game that is most often a very long, big adventure. Most often there is a good story line as well. In a lot of RPG's there is combat, evil, sometimes magic, fantacy and things to get some ones imagination going. Often making an RPG isn't such a problem, it's designing it. It takes a lot of time to design an RPG, most people don't finish it. If you are going to make an RPG don't start a bit of programing untill you have designed the whole story line and started on some levels. On every single game a lot of design work should happen first before you start. The picture to the right is an RPG called Zelda, this kind of 2D RPG is perfect for Bigginers to try and make.

First Person Shooter
First Person Shooter games are games where you are in the first person veiw of a character and the character has a gun that you are able to aim and shoot. These games are often like RPG's because often they have a good story line. A lot of First Person Shooting games are espionage and spying games, this is how they first started to become popular. These games are 3D games so I don't recommend a begginer trying to make one of these games but you could make a 2D game which displays the characters from a bird's eye view, this has been done quite a few times before. First Person shoting games tend to be played by younger people.
Strategy games are games where there is a bird's eye view of a map. On this map you are commonly able to build buildings, men, armies and other things, strategy being the key all the time. Then depending on what the objective of the game is you will attack with your army and win. These games don't take as much planing as other games and don't have as much graphics but is most often very chalenging to make. These games tend to last for years longer then other games, they have an older age range and if you make them correctly, are very difficult to complete.
