This site is all about Barry Island Resort, as it was after it was sold by Butlins. A lot of people think it went totally downhill from that point...the purpose of this site is to prove that point totally wrong. I was a child at the time of my families visits to the resorts and I can safely say on the behalf of myself and them...we have never had better holidays!

For those of you who dont know, Barry Island was built in the winter months of 1965, ready for the camp to open for the next summer season. The camp opened as a Butlins Resort and ran very successfully. In 1986 Butlins were quoted saying there would be a major upgrade to the camp for the 1088/99 season...this upgrade never went ahead, and only 3 months later Butlins announced the camp was to close. The camp was bought by 'Majestic Holidays' who also planned to put lots of money into refitting many aspects of the camp - again this never happened, but the camp re-opened and became known as 'Barry Island Resort'. The site gradually began to show signs of age and neglect, and eventually closed after the season of 1996 - the last year we visited. The closure was due to difficulties in re-newing the entertainment licence & storm damage. There were many plans for the disused site and the swimming pools were open to the public for a short while. Now however there are 250 new houses on the site!
