Bar OC 4 The Crown 0 – 5 September 2004

The much awaited season opener between Bar OC and pub rivals The Crown was played in front of a crowd of 25 at Bromham FC on a sweltering Autumn morning.

From the start Bar OC took the game to The Crown and Crown goalkeeper, Clive Noyes, was relieved to see a Mark Hulland drive skim the outside of his post.  Despite being under pressure for most of the opening 20 minutes, The Crown’s dual strike force of Adam Bewley and Rob Mitchell still posed a threat on the counter attack.

On 25 minutes, a Crown corner broke down and Bar OC midfielder Darren Brown ran the length of the field to set up a counter attack.  His beautifully weighted through ball to Danny Powell set up Rob Drown for a simple tap in.

Bar OC goalkeeper John Hampshire, reacted swiftly five minutes later to prevent a shinned clearance from levelling the game.  The Crown tried to get back into the game but were stunned when just before half time, Bar OC sweeper Tom Paget’s visionary lob (mishit cross !!) nestled in the corner of The Crown net (a la Dennis Bergkamp).

The second half saw Bar OC step up a gear.  After 50 minutes a Craig Watt corner was met by a bullet like header by central defender Lee Greene and the score was 3-0.

The Crown defend a Bar OC attack

Naturally, the heat (and the effects of Devizes Carnival the night before) saw legs tire as the game progressed.  Substitute, Luke Rudman returning from an ankle injury, capped a great one – two with Danny Powell by flicking the ball past Noyes for the fourth with ten minutes left.

A good solid start to the season for Bar OC and good competitive performance from The Crown (with a few former Bar OC players).

Bar OC 5 Rowde Dynamos 2 – 12 September 2004

Following on from last week’s victory, Bar OC had another local derby, this week against visiting Rowde Dynamos.

Bar OC started brightly and Rob Drown was unlucky to see his shot just dip over the crossbar on 10 minutes.  Hitting on the counter attack, Rowde striker Jamie Mullens showed he was a handful and it was his opportunist strike from 25 yards that opened the scoring after 22 minutes.

Andy Webster was unlucky to see his shot kicked off the line as Bar OC tried to level terms.  However, the equaliser was not long in coming when on half an hour Pete Swales’ cross ended up at the feet of Rob Drown and his sweetly hit left foot drive flew into the corner of Robinson’s net. Three minutes later, Mark Hulland’s left foot volley from 25 yards nearly burst the net to make it 2-1 and the tables had turned.

Robinson pulled off several smart stops, the best in the first half when he dived bravely at Danny Powell’s feet just before the break when the Bar OC striker was through on goal.

On 50 minutes, sweeper Tom Paget poked in the third following a corner and Bar OC at last saw some breathing space.  Rob Drown capped an excellent performance by setting up Danny Powell who gleefully accepted the opportunity on the hour to make it 4-1.  Thinking the points were safely in the bag Bar OC took their feet of the gas and were nearly made to pay when ten minutes from time Phil Crew slickly finished a quick Rowde counter attack.

Although Rowde pushed forward in an attempt to claw their way back into the game, their keeper Robinson once again pulled off another brilliant save in the dying moments when he somehow diverted Webster’s drive onto the crossbar.  The larger than life Webster was once again denied a goal when just on full time Luke Rudman beat him to a cross to head in Bar OC’s fifth.

King Alfred 0 Bar OC 5 – 19 September 2004

Division 4 leaders Bar OC went to Division 2 King Alfred and surprisingly cantered home.

King Alfred started brightly and the alert John Hampshire turned Nick Still’s volley on to the crossbar in the opening minutes. Bar OC flew back at the home team and after swift interplay with Andy Webster, Danny Powell exquisitely chipped home from the angle to make it 1-0.  Bar OC grabbed a second on 15 minutes following a corner when Duncan Biggin stabbed home from 3 yards.

King Alfred went straight back at the visitors and a goalmouth scramble saw the ball eventually hitting the Bar OC post.  Two minutes later Kevin Hamersley was denied a third for Bar OC when goalkeeper Young blocked his shot when through on goal.  Young also pulled off another great reaction save six minutes later to deny Danny Powell’s powerful volley.

King Alfred stepped up the gas as the half progressed and striker Mark Clark posed a handful to the visitors as the hung on their lead.

Bar OC grabbed a crucial third goal straight after the break when Biggin again proved lethal from 3 yards.  The victory was secured on 52 minutes when Luke Rudman danced past two players to power home from 18 yards.

Mark Hulland hit the bar on the hour and Andy Webster added the icing to the cake by nodding home the rebound to make it 5-0.

Bar OC 6 AFC Springfield 0 – 26 September 2004

Bar OC turned in a sloppy performance but were good enough to maintain their 100% record with a win over AFC Springfield despite a heroic performance from goalkeeper James Davies.

It started brightly for the Devizes side when the lively Danny Powell nonchalantly flicked Kev Hamersley cross over Davies after three minutes to make it 1-0.  Three minutes later AFC Springfield nearly snatched an equaliser when pony-tailed Scott Fleming robbed Tom Paget but Bar OC scrambled the ball away.

Davies in the Springfield goal showed safe hands on ten minutes when he plucked Andy Webster’s drive out of the top corner.  Bar OC grabbed a second on 19 minutes when centre-half Duncan Biggin showed a ‘Bulleresque’ touch in front of goal to poke home his third goal (all from 3 yards) in two weeks.  Danny Powell’s left foot drive rattled the post on 22 minutes and it looked like the flood gates may open.

However, the young AFC Springfield side showed plenty of spirit and despite being penned back in their half for much of the first period, they still created opportunities with the bulldog Ross Geoghegan and Matt Oliver leading the way.  Bar OC increased their lead just before the break when Webster’s laser guided pass found Powell in space to slip the ball past Davies.

The best move of the game produced Bar OC’s fourth straight after half time when Webster’s deft flick allowed Darren Brown to storm through from midfield and round the keeper.

Davies looked in superb form and his good handling thwarted many a move from the home side.  However, Andy Webster got a well deserved goal on the hour when he deflected Rob Drown’s cross into the corner of the Springfield net. The same duo were responsible for Bar OC’s sixth on 70 minutes.  Drown being upended in the box and Webster drilling in the resulting penalty.

There was still time for AFC Springfield to grab a consolation and substitute Owen Cranshaw should have done better when unmarked he nodded over the bar in the dying minutes.  It was not to be and the Corsham side still await their first goal this season.

Rowde Dynamos 1 Bar OC 2 – 3 October 2004

Derby time again in Division Four where Rowde hosted local rivals Bar OC hoping to avenge their defeat three weeks earlier.

Rowde started the brighter of the two teams and after 11 minutes, Jamie Mullens’ close range header from a Rowde corner was tipped over by John Hampshire in the Bar OC goal.  Bar OC sought to attack on the counter and after 15 minutes, Mark Hulland’s long ball found striker Andy Webster with half a yard on his marker.  His Shearer type finish from 23 yards opened the scoring against the run of play.

Bar OC expanded their game and within a ten minute spell the visitors should have killed the encounter. Danny Powell and Craig Watt both guilty of missing good scoring chances when faced with only Ashley Robinson to beat. Shortly after, targetman Webster hit the inside of the post but Rowde scrambled the ball clear.

With powerhouse Adam Ford imposing himself on the game, Rowde deservedly drew level five minutes later when midfielder, Martin Robinson stole in following a long throw to slip the ball home.  Bar OC should have scored a second when Ashley Robinson couldn’t hold Rob Drown’s cross and Mark Hulland blasted wide with the goal gaping.

The second half turned into a midfield battle with Ford and Martin Robinson taking the game to the league leaders.  John Hampshire acted swiftly to turned aside Ford’s 25 yard drive and reacted brilliantly to block Jamie Mullen’s tap in when faced with an open goal.

With the game petering out into a draw, Bar OC stole the points in the dying seconds.  Darren Brown, released from his defensive duties, found space and his low cross, stepped over by Rob Drown saw Andy Webster gleefully drill the winner home from ten yards.

Bar OC 2 AFC Pilot 1 – 10 October 2004

Top of the table Bar OC hosted the inconsistent AFC Pilot on a blowy morning at Bromham.

The home side started the sharper of the two and Rob Drown should have done better after eight minutes when, unmarked, he headed over from six yards.  Twenty minutes later, a Pilot defender unwittingly helped on Luke Rudman’s inswinging corner but Carl Jackson was alert enough to clear the danger at the back post.  A minute later, Rudman had a glorious chance but with the goal at his mercy he blazed over the bar.

In a scrappy first half, Bar OC deservedly took the lead after 38 minutes.  The outstanding Darren Brown, reverted to his normal midfield role, found Mark Hulland surging through the Pilot’s back four.  Hulland skipped a desperate last-ditch tackle and slipped the ball past Nick Bryant for the opener.

Pilot flew straight back at Bar OC after the break and grabbed an equaliser within three minutes.  John Hampshire palmed away Steve Bierne’s free kick and the resulting scramble saw midfielder Lee Ridout stab the ball home from close range.

Four minutes later, sweeper Tom Paget strode forward and set up Rob Drown. His fierce drive was nonchalantly flicked over the bar by Bryant in the Pilot goal. Bar OC nearly reclaimed the lead in bizarre fashion a minute later, when Andy Webster’s low cross was nearly turned into his own goal by Pilot’s Matt Gurke.  Rudman spurned another chance from the edge of the box shortly after when set up by Kevin Hamersley.

Andy Webster came close three times within a matter of minutes just after the hour.  Firstly, his diving header rattled the post with Bryant beaten.  He then wasted another chance two minutes later after Rob Drown appeared to be bundled over the penalty area.  Within a minute, Bryant was again relieved when he just managed to turn over the burly striker’s free kick.

With the game petering out into a draw, it was substitute Mikey O’Donnell who decided the encounter.  His sweetly struck free kick with five minutes left curled over Nick Bryant to make it 2-1.

Pilot threw everything forward in the dying minutes and nearly snatched a point when Tony Couch’s corner was headed off the line by Darren Brown.

AFC Calne 3 Bar OC 3 – 17 October 2004

League leaders Bar OC  scrambled a point against AFC Calne at Avebury.  It could have so different for the league leaders.  Bar OC had the first chance after eight minutes when striker Luke Enderby turned swiftly on Mikey O’Donnell’s cross.  His left footed drive from 15 yards was brilliantly turned round by Aaron Ward.  The resulting corner saw Luke Rudman head against the post and the resulting ball driven back in saw Enderby score his first league goal from 2 yards.

Bar OC went two up on 25 minutes when Luke Rudman latched onto Darren Brown’s through to slide home from 15 yards.  Calne pulled one back ten minutes later when sloppy defending saw Ryan Kelleher free with the goal at his mercy.  His clinical finish from 10 yards left John Hampshire helpless.

Straight away the visitors should have extended their lead.  Calne’s Sam Parrish could only flick on a cross-field ball from Mikey O’Donnell and Luke Enderby rolled the ball wide from the edge of the box.  Two minutes later the same combination should have produced the third.  Again O’Donnell’s cross was slid wide by the incoming Enderby.

Danny Powell did finally extend the lead just before the break.  Darren Brown’s through ball saw the quick footed striker skip past Parrish before guiding his shot into the bottom left corner.  The ever-threatening Kelleher nearly got a second for Calne but he was unable to guide his header on target following a great cross by Jason Matthews.

Calne dominated the second period and pulled one back ten minutes into the half when Kelleher chased a dead ball and then drilled in from an acute angle.  Bar OC’s Tom Paget cynically pulled down Aaron Clegg with the game entering the final 15 minutes but Liam West’s free kick was well wide.  The deserved equaliser came three minutes later Paul Green’s unmarked header could only be pushed onto the Bar OC crossbar and centre half Sam Parish drove home point blank range.

Danny Powell and Luke Rudman both had chances in the dying minutes for Bar OC and Kelleher was denied a hat-trick by John Hampshire as Calne nearly grabbed a late winner.

Wanderers 1 Bar OC 6 – 24 October 2004

A much weakened Bar OC bounced back from a substandard performance last week with an emphatic victory against Wanderers at the Christie Miller Centre in Melksham.

It was nearly the fastest goal of the season as Andy ‘Bananaman’ Webster broke away down the right hand side.  His near pinpoint cross was met by Danny Powell’s head and only a great save by Scottie Carrick pushing the ball onto the bar prevented a goal within 15 seconds.  From the resulting corner, Powell was tripped in the penalty area and Webster nonchalantly tucked the spot kick home to make it 1-0.

The second nearly came within five minutes as Webster mirroring his earlier run hit the marauding Kevin Hamersley at the back post but his shot flashed wide.  Wanderers should have equalised three minutes later but Damian Shepherd could only head over with the goal at his mercy.

Wanderers through Adam Currie and Dylan Turner pushed forward and for 20 minutes took control of the game.  However, it was  Bar OC who nearly scored next when Powell was set free by Webster but his shot was comfortably gathered by Carrick.  Two minutes later Powell was put through by Darren Brown and his shot rolled just wide.  The second for Bar OC came straight after.  Brown saw Webster’s diagonal run and the big striker’s clinical finish left Carrick helpless.

Bar OC started brightly after the break and killed the game on 50 minutes.  Darren Brown capping a superb performance found Danny Powell in space on the edge of the box.  His exquisite roll through found Pete Swales who finished from 8 yards via the post.  The fourth came within two minutes of the restart.  Brown, again, finding Powell who clipped the ball home from close range.

Adam Currie nearly pulled one back for Wanderers when his 20 yard drive skidded wide of John Hampshire’s right-hand post.   But it was Bar OC who scored again on the hour when Brown’s 20 yard drive could only be blocked by Carrick and Webster gleefully tapped home the rebound.  Tom Evans made it six three minutes later when he burst through from midfield and guided the ball past Carrick.

With a quarter of an hour left, Wanderers scored a consolation when the tireless Shepherd bundled his way into the box and flicked past Hampshire.  Substitute Ashley Holt’s cameo performance deserved a goal and Webster’s flick saw the beefy midfielder hit the post with ten minutes left.

Cooper Avon 1 Bar OC 6 – 7 November 2004

Bar OC returned to league action this week with an emphatic win against Cooper Avon at The Conigre.

The league leaders dominated from the kick off and nearly scored on 11 minutes when Pete Swales’ cross found an unmarked Andrew Webster but Chris Shearn in the Cooper Avon goal easily claimed his header. The first goal came straight after.  From a long ball, Danny Powell pounced on mix up in the Cooper Avon defence and squared to Webster to roll home from 6 yards.

Cooper Avon nearly struck back when Bruce Newman’s freekick was nodded wide by his defensive partner, Andy Roberts.  The miss was punished within two minutes.  Roberts’ short back pass only found the marauding Powell who elegantly chipped home from 20 yards.  Powell nearly got another two within 10 minutes. Firstly when he couldn’t reach Mikey O’Donnell’s exquisite cross and then when he struck the post after a great save by Shearn.

Rob Drown also wasted a good chance but the next goal came on 35 minutes. Webster’s lay off to Matt Hulland found Powell and his spin and clinical finish off the post made it 3-0.  Cooper Avon’s Simeon Mills blazed wide from 5 yards out and straight away found his team 4-0 down.  John Hampshire’s long boot was flicked on by Hulland, Powell skipped past Roberts and the striker celebrated his hat-trick with another calm finish.

Powell robbed Paul Shiner straight after the break and the usually reliable Webster blazed over with the goal at his mercy.  Powell got a fourth on 51 minutes on his own when; somehow, he stumbled through three tackles to slide home from 10 yards.

Cooper Avon pulled one back 8 minutes later when Bruce Newman’s freekick was headed home by Simeon Mills.  Powell wasted another opportunity straight after the restart and substitute Ashley Holt could have scored the sixth for Bar OC but was denied by Shearn.

It came on 74 minutes when Tom Paget found Rob Drown in a seam.  The midfielder’s chipped finish was out of the top drawer.  With time running out, the league leaders should have scored more.  Down, Fran Fife and Powell all guilty of missing gilt edged chances.

FC Bradford 0 Bar OC 3 – 14 November 2004

The league leaders of Division 3, FC Bradford clashed with Division 4 leaders, Bar OC, at Culver Close, Bradford on Avon.  With both sides missing a fair number of players, it was a battle to see whose squad was the deepest.

Bar OC started sharply and after 3 minutes, Luke Enderby was unlucky to see his looping header turned aside by Aaron Harford in the Bradford goal.  Bradford nearly got the opener three minutes later when Lee Stevens met Kieran Powell’s cross. His swift shot on the turn just drifting wide.

Bar OC took the lead straight after when Andrew Webster and Enderby linked up.  Enderby’s initial shot was blocked but his unselfish squared ball left Webster a simple tap in from 5 yards.  Enderby nearly scored after 15 minutes but his 20 yard drive flew just wide with Harford stranded.

Webster should have a got a second on the half hour.  Kevin Whitehouse in the heart of the Bradford defence missed his header but the powerhouse targetman shot tamely at Harford.  Enderby’s hard graft got just reward just before the break.  Webster set him free on goal and when it looked like the chance was wasted, his shot crept through Harford’s fingers.

Enderby’s pace and deft touches were causing problems for Bradford.  He set Webster free after 53 minutes but his 25 yard drive flew wide.  The third came straight after with a near identical move.  Webster cut inside but this time his shot bounced wickedly in front of Harford and flew in over his shoulder.

Ashley Holt capped a fine performance for the visitors and nearly gave Enderby his second a minute later.  Holt’s delicate chipped through ball found the 16 year old striker and his flick over the keeper hit the post before being scrambled away by Lee Moran.

Bradford nearly pulled a goal back on 70 minutes when Wayne Duggan’s acrobatic overhead kick from just inside the box flew over John Hampshire’s crossbar.

With time running out, it was the Division 4 side that nearly extended their lead.  Webster, set up following slick interplay between Tom Evans and Rob Drown, was only denied a hat-trick by a brilliant save by Harford who somehow clawed his 25 yard piledriver out from under the bar.

AFC Melksham 0 Bar OC 5 - 5 December 2004

Following two weeks of league inaction, Bar OC crossed swords in an away fixture with a much improving AFC Melksham.

It was the league leaders who nearly drew first blood in the second minute. Rob Drown skipped down the left flank and his cross was met by Andrew Webster sliding in with Simon Lewis at the back post. It was only the intervention of Lewis’ foot that deflected the ball on to the post.  A minute later Webster had a free header from Craig Watt corner but put it wide.  Danny Powell should have scored straight after when he skipped round Nick Harrison in the Melksham goal but shot wide.

Nick Harrison saved well twice within three minutes.  First of all he tipped Webster’s drive around the post following great knock down by Drown and then pushed Drown’s shot away for a corner.

Having withstood the early pressure, Melksham grew in confidence and pushed forward.  Jason Lock’s pace always posed a threat, along with the intelligent touches of Andy Harrison.  On 35 minutes Nigel Decartret found Lee Stripe and his sharp turn and shot was snaffled by John Hampshire at his near post.

Melksham’s battling warranted a non-scoring first half but they came unstuck within 5 minutes of the restart.  Powell and Darren Brown linked and Drown’s pull back was met by Brown to make it 1-0.

The second came on the hour. The predatory Webster drilled Craig Watt’s corner home from 5 yards.  An unfazed Melksham charged back and Andy Harrison’s free-kick from the edge of the box should have done more to threaten Hampshire’s goal.  His brother Nick saved well two minutes later from Drown as Bar OC drove forward.

Nick Harrison did well to save Brown’s drive on 68 minutes but was helpless as Webster bundled home the rebound to make it 3-0.  With Melksham pushing forward they were caught on the counter, The inspirational Brown found Powell whose unselfish ball allowed Webster to complete a hat-trick to make it 4-0.

Luke Rudman spanked both posts with a 25 yard drive with four minutes left but got Bar OC’s fifth a minute later when the unlucky Nick Harrison slipped on his mishit cross.

Semington Rovers 1 Bar OC 2 – 12 December 2004

Division Four leaders Bar OC travelled to Division One high flyers, Semington Rovers, in what proved to be an enthralling tie.

Despite Semington’s bright start, it was the visitors who nearly grabbed the lead after six minutes.  Andrew Webster latched onto Ashley Holt’s flick on but Russell in the Semington goal pushed his shot round.  Semington flew back and nearly scored two minutes later. Bobby Mitchell robbed Bar OC’s Mikey O’Donnell and his ball inside was hooked over by Ian Grey.

With the game going from end to end, Bar OC wasted two chances within a matter of minutes.  Firstly, Tom Paget’s long ball was beautifully laid off by Webster but the incoming Darren Brown could only drive straight at the keeper.  Russell was again called into action when he gathered Luke Rudman’s close range effort after good work by Danny Powell.

Semington’s Stuart Donohoe was unlucky on 15 minutes to see his 20 yard strike fly just wide of the Bar OC goal.  Dave Castle caused problems for the visitors and his deft flick to Stuart Barber two minutes later should have bought the first goal. His cross shot being just wide of John Hampshire’s far post.

Russell in the Semington goal was lucky when he spilt Powell’s long-range effort but the ball rolled tantalisingly just wide.  Barber again proved a thorn in the Division Four’s side when he skipped into the box and his perfectly weighted pull back was completely missed by Mitchell with the goal gaping.

With the game surprisingly scoreless at half time, it was Bar OC who finally broke the deadlock on 46 minutes.  Powell’s hard work being clinically finished by Webster from close range.  The second came five minutes later.  Rudman linked up with Webster on the edge of the box and with the defence looking for the return ball, the big striker rolled off his marker to blast home with his left foot.

In the next ten minutes, Bar OC should have killed the game.  Powell, Brown and Fran Fife all had good chances to extend the lead but did not take them.  Semington threw bodies forward and Nathan Walker tested Hampshire from 18 yards.  They grabbed a lifeline on 67 minutes.  A mix up between O’Donnell and Hampshire resulted in Barber being left a simple tap in to half the deficit.

Walker was again instrumental in some of Semington’s best moves.  With twelve minutes left, his cross was headed agonisingly wide by Castle.  Powell should have scored Bar OC’s third in the dying minutes but inexplicably hit the post and then the goalkeeper when it was easier to score.  But it was Bar OC who hung on and progressed to the last eight.

AFC Springfield  1 Bar OC 7 – 9 January 2005

Bar OC returned to league action following the Christmas holidays visiting a gritty AFC Springfield side.

The opening exchanges dictated how the game was going to go and it was Bar OC who should have drawn first blood on 4 minutes when Tom Evans blasted over following good work from Kevin Hamersley and Danny Powell.  Ross Geoghegan’s last-ditch tackle denied Rob Drown 8 minutes later and it seemed only a matter of time before Bar OC scored.

However, Springfield showed great discipline and resilience and with goalkeeper James Davies showing safe hands from firstly Darren Brown and diving bravely at Tom Evans’ feet, the home side hung in.  The deadlock was broken on 21 minutes.  Brown’s piledriver from 25 yards hit the bar, James Cooke blocked Drown’s shot on the line but he was powerless to stop Powell from scoring from 6 yards.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the half, a moment of brilliance from Matt Oliver saw Springfield draw level on 27 minutes. Matt Thomson’s throw ended up at Oliver’s foot and from 20 yards his turn and drive left John Hampshire without a chance.

Bar OC responded straight away. Powell’s deft ball set up bulky striker Andrew Webster and his turn and finish into the top corner was out of the top drawer.  Davies saved Springfield several times from Evans, Brown and from Mikey O’Donnell’s free kick but was left with no chance when Brown’s slide rule pass left Powell with a tap in on 42 minutes.

The fourth came after the break.  Hamersley was tripped on the edge of the box and Webster’s curled drive into the bottom corner was perfection. Davies denied Webster a hat trick a minute later when was alert enough to turn a similar effort round the post.

Springfield still posed a danger on the break and Matt Thomson was denied on the hour only by the agility of Hampshire in Bar OC’s goal. Bar OC’s fifth came straight after when Powell completed a hat trick by rounding the keeper following good work by Brown and Webster.  Powell scored again a minute later when his mishit cross drifted over the helpless Davies.  Rob Drown concluded the scoring on 85 minutes when he side footed home Craig Watt’s corner.

Bar OC 0 Corsham Cricket Club 2 – 16 January 2005

There were no upsets at Bromham where Premier Division side Corsham Cricket Club beat Division Four highflyers Bar OC but not without a scare or two.

Taking the game by the scruff of the neck it was the visitors who nearly struck first on six minutes.  Neil Shardlow crashed a 25-yard volley that was tipped round by John Hampshire in the Bar OC goal.  Despite being second best for the first 20 minutes, it was Bar OC who had the next chance on 17 minutes.  Danny Powell set Andrew Webster free on goal and his shot was superbly saved by Paul Clifford.

The twin strike force of Dave Kilmurray and Jamie Rowe were proving to be a handful for the Bar OC defence but just as the Division Four side were clawing themselves back into the game, they went 1-0 down on the half hour in bizarre fashion.  Frank Coleman must have been disappointed when he mishit his cross straight at Hampshire in the Bar OC goal but then delighted to see the goalkeeper inexplicably parry the cross into his net.  Hampshire made amends straight after when he got down well to save Coleman’s 25-yard drive.

Bar OC should have equalised ten minutes before the break.  Powell jinked his way into some space in the box and his deft cross found Pete Swales ten yards out with an open goal.  With the goal at his mercy the Bar OC midfielder missed his kick.  Corsham Centre half Dave Crawford had so far kept Andrew Webster quiet but he could have extended the Premier Division teams lead on half time.  Shardlow’s inswinging corner found Crawford unmarked but the ball appeared to skim his head and go wide.

Bar OC raised their game in the second half and a powerful run by Rob Drown was only ended when he was cynically brought down on the edge of the Corsham penalty box.  The resulting freekick was blasted over by Webster.  Bar OC’s Darren Brown played despite an overnight illness and gradually started to impose himself on the game.  On 53 minutes he beat two players on a 40 yard run and his cross was headed into Clifford’s grateful hands by Webster.

Straight after Coleman set Kilmurray and his right foot rocket from 15 yards crashed off the Bar OC crossbar.  With Bar OC desperately seeking a lifeline Tom Paget moved into midfield and his delicate flick set Webster free.  This time the man-mountain striker shot early and agonisingly wide.

The decisive moment came with 10 minutes left.  Referee Keith Bridge was the only man on the field to think that Fran Fife fouled Coleman and despite Bar OC protests the resulting freekick was headed home by Kilmurray to make it 2-0.  Bar OC threw everything at Corsham and on the break Man of the Match Coleman was unlucky to see his chip hit the bar.  It was not to be for the home team and Corsham marched on to the semi-finals.

AFC Pilot 0 Bar OC 3 – 23 January 2005

Bar OC bounced back from last weeks cup defeat with a comfortable win over the improving AFC Pilot and with it returned to the top of the table.

With The Beeches under water, the fixture was switched to Bar OC’s Bromham pitch so the game could go ahead.  With a heavy surface, it was fairly even start to the game with relatively little goalmouth action for the first half an hour.  Lee Greene and Duncan Biggin at the heart of Bar OC’s defence were excellent in dealing with aerial balls as a Pilot side driven on by Steve Bierne and Matt Gurke tried to use the wind to their advantage.

On 30 minutes it Bar OC who nearly struck first when Tom Paget’s drive from the edge of the box flew over Ben Doel’s cross bar.  Although Pilot’s Lee Jackson also came close five minutes later with an overhead kick, the first half remained goalless.

The second half saw Bar OC step up a gear as Darren Brown, Tom Paget and Tom Evans took control of the midfield.  They went ahead on 55 minutes.  Following a goalmouth scramble, hefty targetman Andrew Webster scored his 14th league of the season when he drilled his shot past Doel and Steve Bierne from ten yards.

The second came shortly after.  Danny Powell’s cross was flicked on by Darren Brown to Pete Swales at the back post.  Doel saved his shot but was powerless to stop Brown from rolling home the rebound from a yard.

Danny Powell joined his partner on 14 league goals with a brilliant individual effort with 25 minutes left. A slick piece of control and a clinical 15 yard drive into the bottom left corner effectively wrapped up the points for the Devizes based side.

With the away side seemingly cruising Pilot nearly clawed a lifeline when Bar OC's Mikey O'Donnell was robbed but Andy Sayer blazed over from 15 yards with the goal at his mercy.

KSM 0 Bar OC 6 – 30 January 2005

KSM were let down badly by some players failing to show for their game with table toppers Bar OC, which meant they had to start with only 10 men.  However, the reduced home side gallantly held their own against a sub-standard Bar OC team.

With the home side comfortably holding their own, it needed Danny Powell’s 15th minute cross to be flicked on by centre half, Lee Greene to allow Andrew Webster to drive home from close range.  Webster nearly added a second on 20 minutes after rampaging Tom Evans was brought down on the edge of the KSM box.  His free kick was elegantly turned over by goalkeeper Paul Kidley.

With a strangely subdued Darren Brown, it was left to Evans to dictate play for Bar OC.  He was set free three minutes later but was denied by the agility of Kidley. The second came straight after. Tom Paget crossed and Webster left free in the box powerfully headed home.  Centre half Duncan Biggin was denied a spectacular goal again by Kidley.  Paget set him up and after a deft touch his 22-yard volley was turned over.

With a full side now on the pitch KSM, stepped forward, big Ben Husband shrugged off Craig Watt’s challenge but was denied only by a slick block by John Hampshire in the Bar OC goal.  Bar OC stretched their lead straight after when Fran Fife set Powell free on goal, drawing Kidley his finish was top notch. KSM did not lie down and Kevin Clifton blasted over from 22 yards on 35 minutes.  With the half drawing to a close, it was only the alertness of Hampshire to deny both Dominic Riccio, and Adam Gainey that preserved the Bar OC’s comfortable lead at half time.

Aaron Pierce posed a constant danger on KSM’s right flank and straight after the break his cross was wasted by Luke Barrett.  Bar OC then imposed themselves on the game and Evans wasted a great chance after being set free by Webster.  Webster completed his hat trick on 65 minutes. The hard working Powell set him free and despite the heroics of Kidley, the rotund rampager tapped home the rebound.  Bar OC’s 5th came straight after.  Rob Drown was denied twice by the brave Kidley by was powerless to stop Pete Swales sublimely chip home from 15 yards.  Bar OC’s sixth came two minutes later.  Craig Watt crossed and Webster slipped home his fourth of the game.  With Luke Enderby’s skill and pace introduced into the game, it was surprising that there were no more goals. The young striker’s play deserved more.

Plough 2 Bar OC 1 – 6 February 2005

A much improving Plough inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Bar OC with two goals from Dave Thomas.

On a boggy pitch it was the visitors who nearly scored after four minutes.  Darren Brown’s ball into the box was nodded over Plough’s goalkeeper Ian Thomas by Danny Powell but Tom Paget’s header at the back post was scrambled away by Davison.  Plough retaliated and after eleven minutes Dawson’s 25-yard drive was clutched by debutant Mark Sinclair in the Bar OC goal.

Dave Thomas was unlucky two minutes later when he found space in the Bar OC box but his header was saved by Sinclair.  Straight away, Sinclair’s quick release ended up at the feet of Bar OC striker Andrew Webster but his shot was dragged wide.

Plough took the game to the league leaders and Sinclair denied Colin Brady after his mazy run took him past Paget and Pete Swales.  With both teams creating half chances, only a slick block on the Plough line stopped Swales after he got on the end of Craig Watt’s cross.  It was Watt’s cross that led the opener on 26 minutes.  Paget picked up the ball on the edge of the box and after cutting inside his left foot drive nestled in the bottom right corner of the net.

Plough weren’t to be denied and deservedly drew level ten minutes later.  Dave Thomas lost Lee Greene on a free kick and despite Sinclair pushing his header onto the bar, he reacted quicker than the Bar OC defence and gleefully drilled home the loose ball.

The second half started with Bar OC trying to raise their game and Paget headed Powell’s cross wide on 50 minutes.  Five minutes later, Dave Thomas gave Plough the lead with a brilliant 20 yard volley after a neat ball by Colin Brady.  Bar OC chased the game and on the hour Ashley Holt set Kevin Hamersley free but the midfielder shot wide. Webster wasted a great chance three minutes later when set free by Darren Brown.  Goalkeeper Thomas diving bravely at the striker’s feet and did enough to prevent Hamersley scoring from the rebound.

With 20 minutes left Ian Thomas saved Danny Powell’s free kick and Brown blasted over the rebound with the goal at his mercy.  Thomas again saved well five minutes later, this time from Webster’s 25-yard free kick.  With Bar OC pressing forward, they were always going to be vulnerable to the counter attack and Plough’s Dave Thomas was denied a deserved hat trick only by Duncan Biggin’s header off the line.

With time running out, Bar OC wasted two glorious chances to save a point when first Ashley Holt shot over the bar and then Thomas saved Powell’s low shot.  Plough hung on and deservedly took the points.

The Crown 0 Bar OC 3 – 20 February 2005

The much awaited return fixture between pub rivals Bar OC and The Crown finally took place at a breezy Jubilee Fields, Bromham.

Bar OC immediately took the game to the home side and on three minutes Rob Drown skipped past Alex Peacop to set up Andrew Webster at the back post. His slide could only deflect the ball just wide.  Despite being pushed back for the first ten minutes, it was the Crown who next came closest to scoring.  Ashley Rake managed to lose Lee Greene but could only lob the ball over the Bar OC goal.  Rob Mitchell exploited a flat Bar OC defence on the counter but was denied by the agility of Mark Sinclair diving at the striker’s feet.

A combative Crown side held their own in the first half and the league leaders were denied many clear cut chances.  Ten minutes from the half, Danny Powell lost Karl Hatala and with Tony Wallinger and Kevin Mitchell getting in each other’s way, Tom Paget blasted over from 15 yards. Straight after Webster’s cross was met by Kevin Hamersley but his shot flashed back across the goal.  Disaster nearly struck the home side right on the break when Hamersley’s shot hit Kevin Mitchell, wrong footed goalkeeper Clive Noyes and rolled past his near post.

Bar OC opening the scoring within four minutes of the restart.  Craig Watt’s precision corner found unmarked Duncan Biggin and the big central defender free header from eight yards left Noyes helpless.  Bar OC stepped up the tempo and Noyes did well to hold Powell’s 25 yard drive on the hour.  The keeper also did well to deny Rob Drown for a similar range two minutes later.  Webster was unlucky to see his spectacular 30 yard volley dip over the bar and Noyes showed expert handling to deal with the sturdy striker’s snap shot a minute later.

The Crown were sucker punched with 12 minutes left.  After Rob Mitchell’s free kick was hit straight at Sinclair, his quick release found Watt in space and after jinking past Hatala, Powell crashed home from ten yards. The superb Noyes pulled off the save of the game, two minutes later when Biggin’s 25 yard drive looked destined for the top corner.

Bar OC’s third came at the death when Mark Hulland was upended by Wallinger inside The Crown penalty area.  Craig Watt topped a superb performance by despatching the spot kick to score his first goal for four years.

Credit has to be given to both teams for playing a fiercely competitive local derby with such good spirit.

Bar OC 4 Wanderers 0 – 27 February 2005

An icy wind greeted the players of Bar OC and Wanderers onto a barren pitch at Bromham.

With frozen legs, Bar OC started well and within two minutes Andrew Webster’s cross was hit first time by Danny Powell only for Scott Carrick in the Wanderers’ goal to save bravely.  Two minutes later, it was Powell as provider.  Mark Hulland whacked his cross against the bar but Webster was there to smash home the rebound.

Within five minutes Rob Drown’s cross-field ball found Kevin Hamersley but his header went straight into Carrick’s hands.  Wanderers bounced straight back and Damian Shepherd’s long throw found the lively Carl McNess who was only narrowly wide with a 20 yard drive. Bar OC were denied a second when Lee Greene’s free kick found Hamersley but his header was acrobatically turned round by Carrick.  At the half’s mid point, the skilful McNess produced a great save from Bar OC’s Mark Sinclair and with the rebound at his feet the midfielder rolled agonisingly wide. Shepherd’s long throws continued to pose a threat in the wind and for 20 minutes the Trowbridge side threatened to equalise.

Despite matching the league leaders for effort, Wanderers went 2-0 on 30 minutes to the classic counter attack.  Tom Paget released Powell and after beating Stuart Parr his cross was tapped home by Paget.  Bar OC’s third came four minutes later.  The visionary Powell sought out Drown and his cross was joyfully headed into the corner of the net to give Webster his 20th league goal.

With the first half score line a little unfair to a competitive Wanderers side, they had to push forward.  However, they were nearly undone from the restart.  Powell missing a great chance after being set up by Drown.  Bar OC spurned further chances in the next 10 minutes.  Hulland shot wide after a great through ball from Webster and then was denied by a great tackle by Guy Comley when through on goal.

Wanderers still posed a threat and after losing Craig Watt, James Starr was only denied by Sinclair’s brave block.  Bar OC finally killed the game off on 65 minutes with a great move. Hulland, linked with Powell and after Carrick saved Drown’s shot, Paget rolled home the rebound from two yards.

Carrick reacted sharply five minutes later to deny Paget a hat-trick when through on goal and Hamersley poked the rebound wide.  The tireless Powell deserved a goal for his work rate but again Carrick produced a great save.  Drown could have grabbed a fifth on the final whistle but shot tamely with only Carrick to beat.

Fascia Graphics 0 Bar OC 0 – 6 March 2005

Fascia Graphics entertained Bar OC in what proved to be an intriguing game at Meriton Avenue, Corsham.

Fascia Graphics started the stronger of the sides and Neurin Jones was only denied by the agility of Mark Sinclair in the Bar OC goal inside the first five minutes.  Despite being second best in the early stages, Bar OC went close on 11 minutes when Kevin Hamersley flicked Darren Brown’s free kick just wide.  Bar OC’s Danny Powell also had a great chance two minutes later but rolled wide of Rob Preston’s goal after being set free by Craig Watt.  Duncan Biggin headed a Watt corner wide on the quarter and looked like Bar OC would take control.

With Darren Legg posing a danger and Craig Lovesey penetrating from midfield the home side looked threatening.  Legg’s deft touch set Steve Allison free but Sinclair acted swiftly to block the shot.  The remainder of the first half continued with both sides probing at each other but without either keeper being threatened

Immediately from the restart Bar OC unlocked the Fascia defence with a simple move.  Tom Paget’s through allowed Danny Powell to lose Gary Knowles but the striker shot over Preston’s bar.  Two minutes later Fascia’s Legg set Jones up but his shot was wide.

On the hour Steve Allison lost Bar OC’s Craig Watt but was thwarted by Sinclair in the visitor’s goal.  Five minutes later Danny Powell’s acrobatic volley bit Rob Preston in
