Tony Bryan   -  A Novel

99 Heyworth Street  - began life as a one act play commissioned as an exhibition performance for two aspiring actresses!  Similar in colouring, height and build they asked me for a piece which would demonstrate their acting abilities. My first inclination was to make them twins with opposite personalities! One feisty and the other timid! The piece evolved around an argument between the two who were previously devoted sisters! The scene can still be found in the heart of the novel.

The stage performance received wide acclaim, and what followed can only be likened to a snowball rolling down hill!  The piece became a play. The play became a musical, the musical became a novel!   The time-span indeed does not relate to the snowball analogy. This particular snowball took seven years to complete.

I would only add that as a result I can honestly say I am much more comfortable developing a story and working on my own, than I was with the production of a full blown stage musical involving the proverbial cast of thousands!  Theatre is the grand illusion! The shining, vibrant extravaganza that the public feast upon bears no relation to the toil, unceasing effort, tears and tribulations that are experienced by cast and crew! There were some dazzling, wonderful moments but they came at too high a cost!   Nonetheless, when something works, is powerful and receives general acclaim, it is difficult to resist the call or should we say the temptation to see just how far it can go! The fact is, I am currently working on a film script of the story and - who knows?
