Issues of importance...
Last gasp chance to find a partnership with McMaster University and the City of Hamilton to replace the Board HQ at 100 Main Street W before the end of May 2009.
A new elementary school in Winona has been a priority for Trustee Barlow and all trustee's for several years. The Ministry has finally approved funding for the construction of this school at the site of the original Winona High School. The board plans on building a 650 seat new buidling on this site. The Ministry funding covers about 80% of the total estimated $11M cost. The board is currently considering selling unneeded property to help fund the unfunded costs.
Unfortunately the recent funding announcement by the Ministry of Ed for growth schools funding did not include the boards request for a new 500 seat wing addition to Saltfleet District HS. Trustee Barlow and the other trustee's will continue to push the Ministry and local MPP's on the need to fund this important needed project. In the mean time Trustee Barlow will make sure staff follow through on the urgent masonary work that needs to be completed.
A decision of the Board of Trustees in April 2009 confirmed the Trustees earlier position of the banning of the sale of bottled water in all its facilities (Elementary schools and Admin centres by Sept 2009 and High Schools by Sept 2010). This is only the start of work by trustees to help improve our environment and start to get healthier alternatives in our schools. This includes the future possible elimination of all pop sales in schools when the Pepsi contract expires, and improvement of food options sold by cafeteria contractors (currently up for renewal). This decision will require the board to invest costs into all our schools to improve the current water systems (fountains etc). Most trustees believe that we should not be paying for an item that is currently funded by our property taxes (municipal water system). Where necessary water bottles will still be permitted (rural schools on wells, health issues, water tests concerns etc).Robert Barlow grew up in downtown Stoney Creek, where after school he would be found at his family's Bar-Don Lanes. Barlow learned the importance of community from his family early in life.
Robert Barlow graduated from Orchard Park Secondary School, Mohawk College with a Law & Security Diploma and also received a Criminal Justice certificate from Miami-Dade Community College.
Robert Barlow is also a recognized community leader receiving awards from the Ontario government recognizing the International Year of the Youth, and the government of Canada recognizing Canada's 125th birthday. Robert also recently (Fall 2008) was recognized by his employer, The Canada Revenue Agency with it's Award of Excellence, the agency's highest award. Robert Barlow was chair of the host committee for the 1994 Big League Baseball (16-18 years) Canadian championships amongst many other community events he has participated in over the years for our community. Robert is now president of the 4 -15 year old Babe Ruth / Cal Ripken program for Stoney Creek and East Hamilton. This is the first Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken league in Ontario (see http://www.leaguelineup.com/battlefieldbaseball)
Robert Barlow had also participated in many school events including speech contests, co-operative education events, graduations and extra curricular activities over and above the many meetings he attended on the behalf of our community while a trustee with The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board from 2000-2003. Photos of Robert Barlow at work as a trustee and other events can be found on the scrapebook page of this web site.
