    Junior Showmanship

When my sister and I began Junior Showmanship in 1989 the AKC did not have great programs that offered Scholarships to Kids that earned titles on their dogs. I must say that this is a step forward for the AKC.

I got Tony, Debrec Rip It Up Stuff from Richard and Debra Cooper of Debrec Springers. He was my very first non-CO-owned Dog. We worked very hard as a team because Tony was not interested in showing. I had offers to get an another dog to show but I would not take the "easy" route out therefore, I declined. Tony and I were a team no matter the hardships. We went on to win 11 first places and 6 Best Junior Handlers, Received his Canine Good Citizenship Title (CGC). In the regular conformation class we went Winners Dog and took our first Major points. We even worked in Field/Hunting, Obedience, FlyBall, and Agility.Tony also starred in a Pet Supplies Plus commercial with Linda and her male Phoenix.
Within that time we also were members of Great Lakes English Springer Spaniel Breeds Association (GLESSBA) which I am still a member of and Westside Dog Training Club.

Only when Tony Retired did I decide to get another show dog. Debrec Prediction followed by Debrec BarLee Sweet Romance and Larklains Junior Prom a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Which I also took many first places with these great dogs.

December 21, 1993 - Debrec Prediction and I had starred in the Chicago Tribune, Author Steve Dale in the Section: KIDNEWS, Special to the Tribune. IT'S A DOG-BEAT-DOG WORLD PRIZED POOCH AND HIS PAL STRUT THEIR STUFF IN THE RING

Who may participate in conformation Junior Showmanship?

Junior Showmanship classes are open to children from 9 to 18 years old and are divided into Novice and Open classes: All participants in Junior Showmanship classes must have an AKC Junior Showmanship Handler Number. Novice classes are for those children who, at the time entries close, have not won three (3) first-place awards in a Novice class at a licensed or member show. To qualify as a win, more than one child must be in competition in a class. The Novice class gives those children who are beginners a chance to gain experience and confidence apart from the more seasoned youngsters. Open classes are for those children having three or more first-place wins; these are the more experienced Junior Handlers.

The classes may further be divided into:

    • Junior: At least 9 years old but under 12 years old on the day of the show.
    • Intermediate: At least 12 years old but under 15 years old on the day of the show.
    • Senior: At least 15 years old but under 18 years old on the day of the show.
