1918
Artist/Writer: Ken Boesem

A fascinating historical look at the world's darkest forgotten medical tragedy...
"...[Boesem] has penned a moving account of a medical tragedy..."
- Maclean's, Canada's weekly national newsmagazine.
"...an excellent example of how comic art can effectively convey subtle and complicated stories..."
-Holycola.net
In 1918, an influenza
outbreak circled the globe. Every country on the planet was affected as
one fifth of the world's population became infected.
This strain of
influenza was so deadly that many people went from having no symptoms
to becoming too feeble to walk within hours. Several would die the next
day.
In a sensitively drawn
interpretation based on actual historical events, Boesem takes the
reader on a journey with the deadly virus from its first recorded
outbreak on a Kansas army base, to the blood-soaked trenches of France
and back across the Atlantic to the quiet heart of a rural Canadian
community.
***The comic book story '1918' originally appeared in the SPX 2003 Anthology***

- Robin Fisher, host of The Onomatopoeia Show - CiTR 101.9 FM.

the light, all the world is bathed in inky black. Raven doesn't like
the dark. It hides the tricks he plays. But now he has found where the

He's about to steal the light. Based respectfully on a Northwest Coast
First Nations story and dedicated with thanks to the First Nations

decidedly Freudian spin on the nature of the Fall.

WAR STORY: An American Parable
Artist/Adapter: Ken Boesem

"War is not nice" - Barbara Bush (1925- )...
"...disturbingly on point...incredibly powerful, especially for its tiny size. Boesem never fails to impress."
-The Comic Queen weblog
Juxtaposing images of
life in the United States since 9/11 with a historical quote from
an alarming source, this timely and evocative short piece
packs a powerful punch. Perhaps not the best stocking stuffer
for the right of wing on your list, unless of course you're thinking of
the carbon-based ink as a substitution for a lump of coal. This piece
was originally written and illustrated as a submission for the war-themed 2004 SPX Anthology but was ultimately not selected for inclusion.
