GLOSSARY OF TERMS **For the assistance and enlightenment of the unitiated, here's a glossary of terms which you may come across: Alternative comics = Generally, a term used to refer to comics that are not about mainstream super-heroes. Also sometimes called "independent", "small press," "new wave," "post-underground" or "art comics." Think "independent film" versus "Hollywood blockbuster." Anthropomorphic = Term referring to any comic featuring characters that are drawn like animals, but act like humans. The comics are sometimes called “funny animal” books. Ashcan = A facsimile or dummy issue of an intended publication (usually prepared as a preview to show possible advertisers or for advance review purposes). Ashcans were originally made to establish trademarks, but now they are more often used as a promotion. The Big Two/Three/Four = The largest mainstream publishers in the business. If someone refers to the big two, they mean DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) and Marvel Comics (Spider-Man, The Hulk, X-Men). The Big Three typically adds Image Comics (Spawn, Witchblade, Tomb Raider), and the Big Four would also include Dark Horse Comics (Hellboy, Buffy, Sock Monkey).B&W = Black and white art. Generally, black printing on white paper. Chapbook = Historically, any small book carried about for sale by chapmen or hawkers (someone who travels about selling his wares on the streets or at carnivals). Today the term can apply to any small book, especially zines. For our purposes, "chapbook" most often refers to books which are "illustrated" but mainly textual (as opposed to a more traditional comic book format). Comics = Shortened form of 'comic books.' Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, usually but not always accompanied by words. Comix = A variant spelling of comics which appeared during the counterculture movements of the 1960s-1970s. Today the term is often used to refer to alternative comic books. Convention = A gathering celebrating the comic book industry. Conventions usually feature popular creators as guests, booths where companies can promote their product and lots of comic book retailers. C alled a 'comicon' or 'con' for short.Creative Team = The group of people responsible for creating the story and artwork of a comic. The Creative Team often consists of:
Die-cut = When areas (usually of a cover) are cut-out by a printer to create a special shaped "window" or other effect. Digest = A small, inexpensively produced mini-comic. Usually self-published in B&W. Generally drawn on 8.5" x 11" paper, folded in half to create a 5.5" x 8.5" book. Direct Market = Comics were originally distributed on newsstands. In the '80s, comics specialty shops began to proliferate. Comic shops now receive most of their product direct from the distributor, thus the Direct Market. Eisner Awards = The comic industry's version of the Oscars. Full colour = Artwork appears in a full range of colour (as opposed to straightforward B&W line-art). Graphic novel = Unlike a Trade Paperback, a Graphic Novel, while still a comic in book form, contains an original story, usually much longer than your typical comic. Hardcover = A comic book with cardboard, cloth or leather cover just like a hardcover novel or other book. Independent = Any comic not published by one of the larger publishers. Independent comics typically sell in much smaller quantities. Mainstream = Any comic (usually focusing on superheroes) that is consistently a best seller and/or published by one of the larger publishers. Mature content = Contains story and or art for mature readers (i.e. sex/violence/coarse language). We're totally anti-censorship, but not everyone is, so it's a buyer beware thing. Mini-comic = A small, inexpensively produced comic. Usually self-published and B&W, mini-comics are generally drawn on 8.5" x 11" paper, folded in such a way as to create multiple pages. Papercover = Book cover is made of the same paper stock as the interior pages (self cover). Perfect-bound = Pages of the book are "squarebound" (glue bound, resulting in a square-spined cover) in the same manner as a paperback novel. Publisher = Any company or individual that publishes comic books. Retailer = Any business, usually a comics specialty shop, that sells comic books. Saddle-stitched = The binding of comic books or magazines with staple(s) along the spine. Sequential art = Refers to the art form of using a series of ordered, static images to tell a story or convey information. The best-known example of sequential art is comics (but also includes storyboards and animation). One of the best known examples of ancient sequential art is the Bayeaux tapestry. Softcover = Book has a soft (usually cardstock) cover. Speed Lines = Lines used to denote that something (or someone) is moving at a very fast speed. Splash Page = A page of a comic that only has one panel that fills the whole page. If the image covers two pages, it's called a Double Splash Page, or “two page splash”. Tinted paper = Means the book is printed on dyed/coloured paper. Essentially B&W except the "white" becomes whatever colour the paper is. Trade Paperback (TPB) = A collected edition of comics that have been previously published in another form, usually as a monthly comic book. Zine = An alternative or small-press independently produced and usually not-for-profit publication (often xeroxed). Most zines are photocopied and hand-stapled but some are professionally printed. Variations include the fanzine (a fan club publication put out by amateurs), the comic zine (alternative/independent comics), the litzine (literary poems, fiction and/or essays), the perzine (personal and/or autobiographical) and the e-zine (published only on the Internet).
