Fixtures 2008/09
Our fixtures for this season are coming along nicely and we look forward to playing our regular opponents as well as some different teams. We do have a number of home games early on but that has only occurred to help some sides out with their pitches. By the end of the season this will even itself out!! (See Fixtures 2008/2009 above).
Presentation Evening
Our presentation evening was held on Friday 13th June at The Hi Tide Inn, Porthcawl. This capped a fantastic season for the team in which they played 30 games, winning 28 (with 14 clean sheets) and losing just 2. We scored 1319 points and conceded 181, scoring 223 tries in the process. The pinnacle of the season was winning the Osprey Cup and this was followed by a successful and highly enjoyable tour to Italy.
Over the season the team has gelled together superbly to play an exciting brand of running rugby but there is no doubt that next season will get tougher as other teams try to close the gap. A fantastic year - well done everyone and keep watching the website for details of training.
Presentation awards were as follows:
Clubman of the year : Kieran Hemburrow
Most promising player : Rhys Thomas
Most improved player : Tom Lodwig
Best forward : Lloyd Wilson
Player of the year : Ben Thomas
Special award for 5 seasons with the club : Lloyd Wilson, Ben Combarro, Chris Walker.
Italian Tour
A great season was capped with a fantastic tour to Italy where we made new friends and saw some excellent rugby played.
First up for the Athletic was Mirano Under 15's (although this is probably debatable as most of the players turned up on motorbikes - which can't be ridden in Italy until 16yrs!!). After falling behind to an early try, the Athletic totally dominated in all areas against much bigger opposition before running out 36 - 5 winners.
Next up was Benetton Treviso Under 15's and again after falling behind, the Athletic played 15 man rugby, running in tries from all parts of the pitch before winning 86 -5.
Both sides were very complimentary of our style of play and conduct of the players and already, both teams have asked for a return tour to Wales.
The hospitality offered by our Italian hosts was fantastic and credit to the players who conducted themselves superbly at both games to enable us all to have a fantastic tour that we will remember for years to come.
There are now some photos of the Italian Tour in the Photo Gallery above.
If anyone has any good photos of the Tour or Osprey Cup Final that I can include on the website then can you please e-mail them to me at martyn18@hotmail.com
Osprey Cup Final
Sunday 4th May 2008 - The Athletic beat Aberavon Green Stars 12 - 10 at Dunvant R.F.C to win the Osprey Cup for the first time. The game wasn't the classic encounter that the two teams served up earlier in the season and the game wasn't won in the style we have become accustomed to but sometimes Cup rugby is about the result.
Congratulations to the whole squad on a fitting end to a fantastic season and we can now look forward to our tour to Italy.
There are also some photos of the game in the Photo Gallery above.
The whole game was professionally recorded on DVD and if you would like a copy, please contact Bev or Tim to place your order. If we buy 30 copies then the cost will be £10 per copy.
New Kit
A big thankyou from the boys and parents to Tim Down and Nick Walker and to their respective companies, 'Metlab' and 'Independent Fire Safety Services' for sponsoring our fantastic new Kooga kit.
Reedonians Visit
The Athletic produced a powerful display on Saturday to beat our old friends from Reedonians. They then followed this up with a good series of wins in a 'four team' tournament on Sunday, beating Pentyrch, Ynysybwl and Reedonians, scoring over 100 points without reply. Some photos of the teams after the Reedonians game can now be seen in the 'Photo Gallery.'
Tour Game
There are some photos of both sides after the game against Grey College , Bloemfontein, South Africa in our photos section. Also included are some new photos of the post match celebrations at the Club.If anyone has any others they want included then please send them to me.(address in 'contacts').
