Lineside Fencing And Gates.

These are very simple things to make requiring little material and a few basic tools. This is another lineside accessory that can become surprisingly expensive if you need more than a few feet of it. If you are anything like me then why buy the simple things if you can easily make them?

As in the plank fencing exactly the same materials are used, thick and thin card, or plastic sheet, the tools needed are the same too. Thick card for the uprights and the thinner card for the lateral pieces on the fencing. Thick card for the upright posts on the gates, the fill in planks are the thinner card. Again no measurements because these models can be used for all the scales we are interested in here. The gates can be three or five barred, the choice is yours and the same applies to the fence, it just means thinner widths on the lateral sections as the posts will remain the same. Don't forget when installing your gates that you will need more posts for the gates to both hang from and latch to. Notice the pointed shape on the gate posts, or they can be left flat. The fence shown gets it's colour from the shellac it is painted with. You can of course paint your fences and gates any colour you wish, or use wood dyes, as for the plank fencing.

To produce many lengths of this fencing you can easily make a jig for the posts to lie in at the correct distance apart and then just glue the lateral planking to the held posts. I work on a glass surface so I put a minute amount of glue on each post, stick them down on the glass and then glue the laterals. It is then an easy matter to slide the knife blade under the posts to release the completed length of fencing.

What is pictured above doesn't show scale models of the real thing but quick and simply made objects for your lineside. They only illustrate a method of building such things and you must apply the appropriate measurements for the scale you are working in. I must also emphasise that the pictures are only to show the method of construction. When built with care and installed in earth or grass with bushes etc you will see how well they look.

This final picture shows the panel fencing, the making of which is shown on another page, and the line side fencing installed on Barchester. Everything you see in this picture has been hand made at absolute minimum financial cost but the return has been high in satisfaction and pleasure in the making.
