Links to useful additions to any model railway library. All the books and magazines shown are directly concerned with the planning, building, and running of model railways. For prototype information I would refer you to the many magazines and books that are readily available from shops and public libraries.

This is a list of links to the home pages of the Model Railway magazines with which I am familiar, some links are to the normal monthly printed magazine whilst others are internet based. You can click on the magazine titles and the link will take you to the magazines home page.
British Railway Modelling : British Railway Modelling is quite different from Railway Modeller. I'm not saying it is any better or any worse, just that it is different.
Hornby Magazine : A new magazine from Hornby and Ian Allan with the first issue being on the 9th March 2007. I will comment after publication of the first issue.
Model Rail Magazine : The same remarks apply here as in the previous comment. You can easily check out all the magazines at any of the Smiths news agents and make your own choice. You may even like to take more than one, pennies allowing, or none at all.
Model Railroader : This is the way the Americans do it and I have to say they do it in style. Great models to look at and admire, plenty of hints and tips, many of which can be applied to this side of the pond, and a retail market to make you green with envy. It's worth getting one magazine to keep even if you never buy another.
Model Railway Express Mag : Unlike the other magazines, which are published monthly, this is Pat Hammonds news service, a Monday to Friday on-line magazine that brings you all the latest news and reviews. You can also post your views and opinions. This is where I get my regular daily fix.
Modern Railway Modelling (MRM) : A quarterly magazine dedicated to UK outline and overseas coverage of D&E modelling. Railway Modeller : Railway Modeller is my favourite magazine, so much so I have it delivered to me every month here in Spain. I find it serves most levels of modelling with many excellent photographs, interesting articles and all the information on the latest models as they come on the market plus a large advertising section where you can find almost anything you want. Train Collector Magazine . A brand new magazine which covers all gauges and brands of model and toy trains. Not just for the collector by any means but also for anyone interested in the historical aspects of the hobby. Very interesting and well worth a look at the web page. Trains On-Line Magazine : A free on-line magazine for all 4mm scale modellers. Plenty of information on the site and you can download their magazine for viewing at your leisure.
Top Of Page.
Here there is a list of books which I have personally bought or which come highly recommended. Believe me if I have shelled out my cash for a book then it must be worth having.
An Approach To Model Railway Design. Buckingham Branch Lines Parts 1 and 2 1945 to 1993. 60 Plans For Small Locations.
Author : Iain Rice. Published by Wild Swan Publications Ltd
A slightly different approach by one of model railways best known writers. Well worth reading and adding to your library as there is a lot of thought provoking stuff here plus pages of inspirational layout ideas.
Author C.J.Freezer.
Another doyen of the model railway world known by thousands of modellers through his books, press writings, track plans etc. Much helpful stuff on train and track formations and operating the railway as well as advice on what to put where, plus some different layout plans.
Author : Peter Denny. Published by Wild Swan Publications Ltd
I grew up with Peter Denny's Buckingham Branch and he has been the inspiration behind many of the things I have done in my railway modelling.. These two books show a man's lifetime devotion to this hobby of ours. Full of inspirational photographs it is fascinating to see the progress as the years roll by. The materials we take for granted today weren't available in his earlier years and after World War II there wasn't much of anything. These are the kind of books you will return to again and again, both for their reading pleasure and the information they contain.
Author C.J.Freezer. Published by Peco Publications.
A small 32 page booklet that gives much food for thought for those of us with a more limited space at our disposal. The layouts are designed for 4mm scale 00 gauge but that doesn't mean they cannot be used by other scales and gauges for their ideas or with adjustments for size differentials. A very inexpensive introduction to layout planning and highly recommended.
Published by Peco Publications.
Another of this authors inexpensive booklets, this time aimed specifically at N gauge, it shows the kind of layout that makes many 4mm scale modellers drool with envy. A must for anyone in the planning stage of N gauge who might need inspiration or a little push in the right direction.
