Welcome to the model railway web pages of Barchester. Hopefully you will like Barchester and it's surrounds, so much so that you will want to take up this marvellous hobby yourself. That's my intention anyway.

After you have had a look at Barchester and decide that you too want a model railway then the next logical step for any beginner is to join the "Building & Operating Your Model Railway Forum". We are a friendly bunch on the forum and welcome the simplest of questions. There is a Guest posting area if you would like to find out more before registering.

If you are already a modeller then I sincerely hope that you will find something to interest you in what follows, or, if you should find incorrect or misleading information, please let me know. You should also consider joining us on the Forum where your help would be much appreciated.

For the casual looker in, or for those contemplating making a start, and you feel that you need still more information than is shown here then please don't hesitate to contact me.

Any opinions or views put forward on this site are purely my own and are not  necessarily those of any other railway modeller.

**************************************************

The creation of model railways has been a major hobby of mine for many, many years and is still as fulfilling today as it was when I first started. I don't use the word 'creation' lightly, as that is exactly what this hobby is about, creating something that is uniquely yours. A moving, living picture, composed of many different materials, requiring skills that you probably thought you didn't have but which you will learn as you progress.

A very important consideration in today's financial climate is that success in this hobby isn't directly related to how much you spend. When I say success I mean the satisfaction and pleasure that is going to be yours if you choose to follow the hobby and that success has nothing at all to do with how much you can afford. In fact, less can be much, much more. That is not to say that model railroading is a freebie, of course it isn't, but I am being completely truthful when I say that a little can go a very long way.

Some More About Me.

This is a hobby for everyone, from children to old un's like me. I started about 45 years ago after I helped a padre in the RAF set up his 0 gauge system. This set me thinking of the train set I had when I was a child and the pleasure it gave me, that's when I could get at it after dad had his go.

I bought a couple of model railway magazines and was amazed at the way standards had developed and advanced over the years, not realising earlier just how many people, adults that is, were persuing the hobby. The bug bit really hard then and this, with gardening, continued to be my favourite pastime right up till leaving the UK to come to Spain in 1990.

Leaving the model railway, along with my garden, were the only regrets I had when we left. In the years since, up till the January of 2005 , I have had neither the opportunity, or the space, to do anything about starting again.
Then, after a lot of pestering and pleading, the manager of the complex we live in very kindly made available a room underneath our block of apartments for model railway purposes. I wasn't the only one interested as one of our Spanish doctors here had also used persuasion on the manager to let us have some space. When we took the room over I had available to me the whole length of one wall to a depth of about 5 feet and some 20 feet long. By modern standards this is quite a generous space.
The photographs, on various pages throughout the site,  give some idea of what I am doing. You can click on the photographs for larger views. The exceptions are the two pictures shown below which are links.
