One of the worst maritime disasters was the sinking of the Princess Victoria on 31st January 1953. The ship sank off the Copeland Islands (off the coast of Donaghadee) with the loss of 135 lives. Further information can be found here.
Amongst the list of those who lost their lives was Ian McDonald, aged 28, who lived in Stranraer and worked as a Clerk at Stranraer Railway Station. Ian was married with a son and was travelling to the family home in Ballyhalbert at the time.
"Death in the North Channel" by Stephen Cameron is a publication detailing the story of the Princess Victoria and can be purchased here.
There are various other shipwrecks along the Ballyhalbert coast, too numerous to mention here. Click here to go to the Irish Wrecks Online site to find out more.
