I have chosen to commence my family tree and history from the date 15th December 1661. There are records of my branch of the Baildon family history dating back to the period before the Norman Conquest, but to start with I have chosen the above date.

William Baildon was baptised on the 15th December 1661 and he was the son of Christopher Baildon and his wife Elizabeth who's maiden name was Tyas.

William Baildon married Elizabeth Bayley of Briestwell near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England on the 19th February in the year 1690 or 1692 and they had two sons, John  who was baptised on the 21st November 1705 and Adam who was born in 1712.

Adam Baildon married Mary Newton and their son William was baptised at Sandal near Wakefield, West Yorkshire on the 5th March 1736 or 1737. Mary died in 1749.

William Baildon, son of Adam and Mary was educated as a civil engineer and went to Falkirk, Scotland before 1765 together with a Dr. John Roebuck of Sheffield, who started the ironworks at Carron, near Falkirk, Scotland. William Baildon was engaged in the smelting of iron.

William Baildon married Elizabeth Anderson at Falkirk on the 22nd March 1765. She was born on the 19th October 1741 at Falkirk.

William and Elizabeth had four sons and three daughter:

1. James born 4th January 1771

2. John born 11th December 1772 at Larbert, Scotland.

3. Adam born 12th January 1776

4. William born 2nd November 1781

5. Elizabeth born 26th May 1766

6. Mary born 28th July 1768

7. Jane born 7th June 1779

William Baildon senior died at Denny near Stirling, Scotland in 1820.

William and Elizabeth Baildon's second son John, born 11th December 1772, studied mechanics, hydraulics and mechanical drawing under Daniel Manson of Stirling. Later under his father at the Carron Iron Works, Falikirk, Scotland he learned the practical side of iron smelting and founding. His father was a friend of John Smeaton, the celebrated engineer and builder of the 3rd Eddystone Lighthouse, which is now situated re-erected at Plymouth, England.

John Smeaton was also a Yorkshireman, being born at Austhorpe near Leeds on the 8th June 1724. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society 1753, awarded the Copley Medal for research into the mechanics of water wheels and windmills. He designed Ramsgate Harbour in 1774 and the Forth and Clyde Canal bridges at Coldstream and Perth, Scotland.

In the present day there is, near to the birth place of John Smeaton, a school called 'John Smeaton Community School' and various streets near to the school are named after the Baildon family.

John Smeaton 1724 - 1794

John Smeaton's reputation as an engineer spread throughout Europe and many foreigners came to England to consult with him. Amongst these was a land owner from Upper Silesia, now in Poland, called Count Fredrich Wilhelm Reden.

John Smeaton recommended John Baildon to the Count and in 1793 John Baildon left England to go to Tarnowitz, Upper Silesia to assist in the building of a canal and iron Works.

BAILDON IRON WORKS, SILESIA

John Baildon eventually left the srvice of the Count and in 1796 built the first iron bridge on the continent of Europe. The Silesian bridge spans the River Striegau near Lassau.

Prior to 1834, together with three partners John Baildon also founded the iron works called 'Baildonhutte' at Kattowitz on the River Rawa. The iron works is still in existance today producing many products.

John Baildon married Helene Antonie Galli, daughter of an Italian merchant, on the 26th June 1846 in Silesia. Together John and Helene had a family of five sons and two daughters.

John Baildon died at Gleiwitz, Silesia on the 7th August 1846 and is buried in the Baildon Foundry Cemetery.

The first son of William and Elizabeth Baildon (nee Bayley) mentioned in the 3rd paragraph of our History, namely John Baildon, was baptised on the 21st November 1705 and lived in Thornhill near Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. John married Sara Moore of Mirfield at Mirfield on the 24th August 1731.

John and Sarah had two sons; David who was baptised at Sandal on the 5th March 1732 or 1733 and John who's baptism record is not found, but he was a witness to his brother's marriage in 1756.

John Jnr, whom we have no record of his wife, had a son called Thomas Baildon who was born on the 13th January 1740. Thomas Baildon of Mold Green, Dalton, Huddersfield married Elizabeth Tommas on the 19th November 1778 at Kirkheaton, Huddersfield.

During this period the Baildon family, that are covered by this website, lived in the Dalton, Kirkheaton and Briestwell areas of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. They were no doubt engaged in the woollen textile industry in various trades. This was around the time of the industrial revolution when shepherds looked after the sheep while the women folk spun the wool on their 'spinning jennies' at home. One of the places they lived  was 'The Fold' at Dalton and its name indicates it was previously  used as a gathering place for their sheep.

The seventh child of Thomas and Elizabeth Baildon, George who was baptised on the 23rd October 1803 married a lady by the name of Sarah (we do not have her maiden name). They lived on Cross Church Street in the centre of Huddersfield and had a daughter called Mary Jane who was baptised on the 25th October 1831. On the day of the Census in 1841 Mary Jane Baildon aged 9 years is shown living with a Rebecca Noble at 'The Fold', Dalton. Why she was there without her parents is not known.

The second son of Thomas and Elizabeth Baildon, David married Mary Firth on the 4th June 1801 at St. Peter's Church, Huddersfield.  Together they had three children:

1. John born 4th April 1802

2. Abraham baptised 10th October 1808

David Baildon died at 'Lane', Huddersfield on the 19th January 1856.

David's son John Baildon, born 4th April 1802 married a Miss Eliza Rayner on the 30th Sepetember 1824 at St. Peters Church, Huddersfield. Together they emigrated to New York, U.S.A in 1840 and John was naturalised a U.S. citizen on the 9th October 1852.

So far we have a branch of the family left in Yorkshire while new branches started in Germany and the U.S.A.

John and Eliza Baildon had two sones;

1. John born in January 1826 at Huddersfield, who emigrated to the U.S. with his parents.

John had married Mary Elizabeth Mowry on the 5th April 1847 and they had fourteen children together. The first child Abraham was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 5th March 1848 and then the second child Maria was amazingly born back in England at The Fold, Dalton, Huddersfield on the 18th November 1849! Their next child Mary was born on the 24th October 1852 back in Little Falls, Passaic County, New Jersey, U.S.A. Five other children were born there and then the final six were born in Montgomery, Orange Country, New York.

David Baildon spent his working life as a machinist at the Warwick Knife Factory in Warwick, New York. His wife Bertha was a local reporter for the New York Times Herald Newspaper.

The sixth child of Thomas and Elizabeth Baildon called Jonathan, baptised on the 11th February 1798 married, on the 10th May 1818 at Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, one Isabella Mitchell who had been baptised at Kirkheaton on the 28th March 1802.

During his life Jonathan worked in the woollen industry as a 'stuff presser' or weaver and according to the 1841 Census Jonathan and his family lived in Jowett Square, Huddersfield. There were eleven children in the family of Jonathan and Isabella:

1. William Baildon baptised 19th December 1819 at Kirkheaton

He is  employed as a dyer at a cotton mill owned by W.C Plunkett & Sons and lives with his wife Hannah aged 53 years and their daughter Martha Ann Baildon who was born in Bradford, England in December 1859.

10. James Baildon born 1833 in Jowett Square, Huddersfield

11. George Baildon baptised 13th May 1837 in Huddersfield

I have no record of what happened to Jonathan Baildon but his wife Isabella died on the 22nd July 1890 at Bradford, West Yorkshire, England and is buried in the Baildon Family grave in the cemetery at Undercliffe, Bradford. At the time of her death she was living at No7. Back Wood Street, White Abbey, Bradford. Of the children listed above, also buried there are; Sarah and Jane. The Baildon grave is Plot No 497/498 and 452. at the cemetery.

John Baildon, son of Jonathan and Isabella, emigrated to the U.S.A in 1870 together with his wife, name not know, and he was naturalised a Citizen on the 5th October 1894 at Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

The son James also emigrated to the U.S.A but unfortunately died shortly after his arrival in 1871. His wife Olive remained in Bradford, England and died there in 1882 aged 52 years. She is buried in Plot No 324 at Undercliffe Cemetery. James and Olive had two sons, William Edgar Baildon born 27th April 1867 and James Seth Leeming Baildon born 6th March 1865 and a daughter Sybilla Jane Baildon born 8th March 1863. The family at the time of the births were living at No6 Railroad Street, Bradford. James was a cotton warp journeyman employed by Oates, Ingham & Company of Thornton Road, Bradford.

Descendents of James and Olive still live in Yorkshire but I have no history for James Seth Leeming Baildon.

The sixth son of Jonathan and Isabella, George Baildon who was baptised at Huddersfield on the 13.05.1837 was a dyer in the woollen industry.

George Baildon

George in connection with his trade made frequent trips to Belgium and apparently lived in a town called Loth situated south west of Brussels.

George like music and took with him his piano. His wife was Eliza Jane Baildon, nee Forrest, the daughter of Thomas Forrest, a coachman from Eastbrook Terrace, Croft Street, Bradford. She was born on the 15th March 1840. George and Eliza's son Thomas was born in Loth, Belgium so we know the family were living there at that time and family stories tell that the daughter Annie was nearly born there also.

George and Eliza Jane Baildon were the parents of five children:

1. George born in 1865 at Bradford

2. Caroline born on the 27th February 1868 at Bradford

3. Thomas born on the 12th June 1871 in Loth, Belgium

4. Annie born on the 24th June 1874 at Bradford

5. Georgina born on the 30th December 1879

George Baildon Senior died on Xmas Eve 24th December 1879 at the family home No. 30 Cordingley Street, off Otley Road, Bradford. He was only 43 years of age and his death certificate states that he died of 'bronchitis syncope'. His death was certified by Dr. A.B. Munro and the death was registered on the 30th December 1879 by George's brother in law Sam Wild who was present at the death.

George is buried in the family grave at Undercliffe.

Only six days after her father's death little Georgina was born on the 30th December 1879. She unfortunately died in June 1881 and is buried with her father at Undercliffe.

Between the death of George and Georgina the family move to No 161 Caledonia Street, Bradford.

The first child of the family, George Baildon Jnr married a Miss Jane Elizabeth Harris in 1884 at Bradford. George and Jane emigrated to Australia and then to New Zealand for the gold rush. George died in New Zealand of throat cancer and is buried in a cemetery at Ohakune. What happened to Jane we do not know.

The second child, Caroline at the age of 15 years on the 22nd April 1883 at Bradford gave birth to a son, Abraham. We do not know the identity of the father of Abraham. Abraham was registered by his grandmother Eliza Jane Baildon as her son with her husband George, despite him being dead since 1879. Abraham's history is dealt with further down the story.

Caroline Lamb nee Baildon

Caroline went on to marry a Benjamin Frederick Lamb who was born in 1866 and came from Croydon. In 1866 he was a weights and measures inspector for Halifax Council. In the 1901 Census Caroline, Benjamin and their children, Thomas, Benjamin Junior  and Caroline Junior are living at No2 Summergate Place, Halifax. Besides these children the Lambs had three others; Arthur, Dorothy and Winefride.

We have no history for Arthur Lamb. Thomas Lamb married a lady called Belle but we do not know any other details other than the fact that they had three children; Derek, Doreen and Joyce.

Benjamin Junior married a lady called Beatrice and they lived at No 60 Pye Nest Road, Halifax. They died without children.

Both Thomas and Benjamin Lamb served in the army during World War One.

Dorothy Lamb, known as 'Dolly' married a George Haigh and they died without children.

Winefride married Frank Calvert and they had a daughter Wynn Angela who married Reginald Horner.

Angela Horner nee Calvert

Angela Horner was found by some old fashioned detective work i.e knocking on doors in Halifax in the locus of where the Lamb family lived in the 1950's, and was eventually traced through a theatre connection in Halifax. On being contacted it was apparent that she was not aware of the connection between her grandmother Caroline Lamb and the writer's grandfather Abraham 'Harry' Baildon. Angela was somewhat taken aback by this story.

Benjamin Lamb Senior died on the 19th February 1908 and is buried in the Baildon grave at Undercliffe along with his wife Caroline who died on the 25th October 1952.

The third child of George and Eliza Jane Baildon, Thomas  was married at Bradford on the 24th October 1895 to Clara Neville, who was born on the 29th June 1873.

Thomas and Clara Baildon

The 1901 Census shows Thomas' mother Eliza Jane Baildon living with her son and daughter in law at No3. Hampden Street, Little Hornton, Bradford.  Thomas is shown as being a 'tin plate maker. He was apparently doing well in the world being the owner of No3 and No1 Hampden Street.

Thomas and Clara had two daughters; Doris and Norah.

Norah was born on the 10th June 1901 and went on to marry Harold Tate. They had two sons; Neville and Geoffrey and both are still living.

Doris was born on the 4th November 1904 and she married Harry Cuttell, who was born on the 29th November 1905. They married at the Moravian Church, Little Horton Lane, Bradford which is situated around the corner from Hampden Place. Harry was born in Oldham, Lancashire and began work at the age of 13 years in a woollen mill. He worked from 6am until 6pm and attended night school after work. At the age of 17 years Harry was the manager of a butcher's shop.

Harry and Doris had two children; Marjorie and Herman.

In September 1939 the Cuttell family emigrated to New Zealand where Harry landed with 12 shillings and six pence in his pocket and the promise of work for a week. Eventually Harry had his own business in Gonville, Wanganui, New Zealand.

Harry died in August 1992 and Doris on the 31st December 1998.

Their daughter Marjorie married Francis Dennis, who died in 2005. She still lives in New Zealand with her family Pauline, Allan, Peter, Sharon and Ian.

Abraham Baildon, the child of Caroline Baildon who was born when she was unmarried at the age of 15 years was brought up by his uncle Thomas Baildon, Aunt Clara and grandmother Eliza Jane Baildon at No3 Hampden Street, Little Horton, Bradford.

Abraham or 'Harry' as he was known, was an apprentice trained cabinet maker and joiner by trade.

Abraham 'Harry' Baildon

Abraham was, as far as we know, always known by the name 'Harry Baildon'. We do not know the reason for this it is lost in time but he also did not know or was not told he was called Abraham until he went to collect his pension book for the first time and was refused due to him using the name Harry Baildon. He had to then prove his actual identity before the book was obtained!

'Harry' Baildon was married at Bradford Register Office on the 22nd December 1906 to Edith Alice Prest who had been born on the 29th April 1887. On the marriage registration certificate Harry states his father as being Thomas Baildon, again another white lie!

Edith Alice Baildon nee Prest

Edith Alice Prest was born in Otley, West Yorkshire. Her father Thomas was an insurance Superintendent and her mother was called Hannah.

Thomas and Hannah Prest outside their home at Jesmond House, Jesmond Road, Heaton, Bradford.

The great grandparents of Thomas Prest were John and Jane Prest. They were married on the 18th February 1761 at Kirkby Wiske, North Yorkshire.John and Jane were the parents of Christopher Prest who was baptised at Laverton in the parish of Kirkby Malzeard on the 16th August 1761.

There is no record of Christopher having been married but there is a record of the baptism of his son William, the father of Thomas Prest, on the 31st December 1806 at Intack, North Yorkshire.

William Prest married Isabella Braithwaite at Kirkby Malzeard on the 16th October 1832. The wedding was performed by Mr K. H. Turner and witnessed by John Kearton and Elizabeth Bolton. William was an agricultural worker and Isabella was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Braithwaite of Kirkby Malzeard. Isabella was baptised at Kirkby Malzeard on the 30th October 1808.

Thomas Prest was born in the year 1846 in Kirkby Malzeard, North Yorkshire and the first recording of him is in the Census for the year 1851. He was living with his parents at the address 85 Cobble Row, Kirkby Malzeard. He was employed in the manufacture of straw plait. Straw plait had many uses including the manufacture of straw boater hats.

The 1861 Census shows Thomas Prest, then aged 16years to be a plough boy living at Azerley, North Yorkshire. The 1901 Census shows Thomas as being 55 years of age and a Superintendent of Insurance living in Bradford at 18 Mannheim Road. A long way from being a plough boy! His wife Hannah was born near Thirsk, North Yorkshire and they were both active members of the Moravian Church at Bradford.

Thomas and Hannah had six children, in the 1901 Census they were recorded: Emily aged 24 years, Rhoda aged 22 years, Thomas aged 18 years, Edith Alice aged 13 years, Willie aged 7 years and Reginald aged 3 years. All the children, with the exception of Edith Alice who was born in Otley, were born in the Wyke district of Bradford.

In the 1911 Census Thomas and Hannah Prest are recorded to be living at 62 Jesmonde Avenue, Bradford together with the following members of their family: Willie Prest, nephew aged 17 years, Reginald Prest, grandson aged 13 years, Rhoda Alice Hainsworth nee Prest, daughter aged 32 years, Fred Hainsworth son in law aged 32 years and Winnie Hainsworth daughter of Fred and Rhoda aged 7 years.

Thomas Prest is stated to be a stock room worker in a water proofer and Fred Hainsworth is a wharehouse manager for a water proofer.

Certificate of Baptism for Edith Alice Baildon nee Prest

Thomas Prest set his son in law Abraham 'Harry' Baildon up in business as a funeral director and cabinet maker at the premises 153 Toller Lane, Bradford. By coincidence in the early 1980's the great grandson of Harry, Richard Baildon worked at the same premises when it was 'Feather's Toy shop.

Harry was the manager of the business but it was Thomas Prests' name that was displayed above the shop front. This enterprise did not work out and the business eventually closed.

Harry and Alice Baildon had six children; Thomas, George, Eric, Elsie, Joan and Eunice who died in infancy, 1914.
