The summer of 2005 was full of leadership opportunities for me. If you are a youth with a disability between the ages of 16 -28 check it out for yourself.

Leadership development, networking and collaboration, public policy, team building and personal development filled five days during the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN) 2005 Advanced Leadership Institute, held July 23-27 in Washington DC, for emerging leaders between the ages of 16-28. Building A Common Ground: Creating a more valuable, viable, visible community was the theme for an event that created an overarching emphasis in how young adults shared their opinions, experiences and insight in the areas of education, employment, healthcare and disability culture.
"We accomplished a lot in such a short amount of time," said Kristen Jones, NYLN Governing Board Vice Chair and Conference Organizer, from Houston, Texas. "We have several goals to accomplish when we organize an Institute. Then we come together to educate young leaders who are similar to ourselves by way of age, experience, and personal goals. But we also utilize this time to collect information for the next year of activities for NYLN, specifically in the areas of research, public information goals, teleconference topics, and new activities to tap into."
Forty Institute participants from across the country participated in highly interactive sessions about ways in which they can affect change in areas of personal interest once returning home. And though the Advanced Leadership Institute may be over, the actions of the National Youth Leadership Network are still in full force. Other forms of outreach activities provided by the NYLN that happen throughout the year are the following:
"We have activities year in and year out," said Peter Squire, chair of the Network. "Each year we prioritize specific activities that will receive our primary attention, and this year we are really working toward becoming a non-profit organization. It will be the first national non-profit to be fully youth-led, which fits with the mission of the NYLN completely. We will also be working toward extending our services and focus on more of a grassroots level, so ideally we will be able to increase the number of individuals served by our organization in a year’s time."
The National Youth Leadership Network provides annual activities such as quarterly teleconferences for limitless young people from across the country, newsletters, research, public information outreach, membership activities, mentoring links, and various resource consultation opportunities.
