Preparing for Disaster for People with Disabilities and other Special Needs.

    On April 22,2006 the Are You Ready? Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities event was held at Goochland Baptist Church  2454 Manakin Road, Manakin -Sabot, VA 23103

     

    Thank you goes to Goochland Baptist Church and their members for allowing us to use the church for the Are You Ready? Event.

     

    Special Thanks to Collin Maybee for serving on the event planning committee and the students from Deep Run High School for putting all the information packets and packaging many of the items that were put in the "Go-Kit".

     

    Also a special thank you to Darcy Howarth of the American Red Cross of Greater Richmond Chapter for providing the Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities (workbook), booklets, Disaster Preparedness Coloring Books and Pets and Disasters along with a emergency radio for the raffle, Ben Garrett from the Virginia Department for the Aging for setting up a display, providing information and a prize for the raffle, Rev. Jon Barton from the Virginia Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster; Virginia Council of Churches for setting up a display and provided information to event participants, Jane Johnson from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) for setting up a full display of what is needed in a Pet Disaster Supplies Kit for service dogs, Pet Club provide single serving bags of dog food, Ellie Coyne provided latex gloves for the pet table, National Organization on Disability for providing informational pamphlets through the Emergency Preparedness Initiative and pen lights, Virginia Board for People with Disabilities for information on their programs, DVD, pens, post-it notes, and bookmarks, and  Wal-Mart provide a gift card to help with purchase of the Picture Tote Bag.

     

    To the following people who helped to support the event: Ellie Coyne, Doris Fox, Anne Henley, Billie Massie, Roger Moore, Sandra Nuckols.  

     

    Thank you to all the event volunteers: Ellie Coyne, Carol Daddis, Jackie Eby, Jean Fields, Doris Fox, Pastor Dean Frazeur, Susan Frazeur, Al Henley, Anne Henley,Selma Herweyer, Robin Hillman, Jeanette Irvin, JoAnn Jeffrey, Jane Johnson, Peggy Marquis, Billie Massie, Kathy Maybee, Zannah Merrill, Joey Moore, Roger Moore, Diane Proctor, Phyllis Toney, Miss Sherri the Clown(Wilson) 

    Lunch was provided to volunteers thanks to: Chick-fil-A provided chicken sandwiches, Domino's Pizza provided pizza, Food Lion 1541 provided bottled water for the event, Carol Daddis made homemade cookies, JoAnn Jeffrey made brownies, Ukrop's provided a gift card used for ham and rolls, Kroger provided gift cards used for fruit and vegetable platters.

    13 Prizes were raffled off at the event. Each prize related to items that could be added to the Personal Disaster Supply Kit.

     

    150 starter  "Go-Kit"  were assembled at the event to be given to people with disabilities throughout the local area of Goochland,Hanover, and Henrico, Virginia. Each bag included:  Document Holder, Disaster Preparedness for People with Disabilities (workbook) and other disaster preparedness information, Picture Tote Bag, Toothbrush and toothpaste, Latex Gloves, Pocket Tissues, Bottle of Water, Pad of paper and pencil/pen, Trash Bag. 

    On Tuesday, April 25,2006, twenty-five (25) Bags were delivered to the Goochland Meals On Wheels site.

    Disaster Supplies Calendar 

    This Disaster Supplies Calendar is intended to help you prepare for disasters before they happen. Using the calendar, you can assemble a disaster supplies kit in small steps over a five-month period. Check off items you gather each week. Remember to change and replace perishable supplies (such as food and water) every six months.
